Good kettle - but deteriorates with use (no spare parts!) – Since having a Shark kettle for many years with temperature control, I couldn't go back to a plain kettle (& for making good long black coffee you don't boil the water) & I have learnt that plastics do deteriorate with the constant heating that kettles go through. So the Breville smart kettle was a reasonable choice at the time being… Read more

predominantly glass. But recently the hinge pivot at the top cracked, and I thought that it would be easy to get spare parts to replace it (even if it was the whole handle assembly) as the kettle is still functioning well, and by boiling a slice of lemon regularly in it it keeps the scale away. Surprise (or should I be?) - another disposable whitewoods product that has no repairable spare parts listed on the Breville site. So I try a "service centre" - same story, you have to buy a new kettle. Really, there is enough electrical waste these days without this global neo-economic idea of sustaining business through over-consumption - it also flies in the face of the consumer's right to repair product.

I will be seriously considering not ever buying Breville appliances again - and also letting as many people know as possible that this "disposable product" philosophy is detrimental to our environment.

OR.

P.S. I think the product is discontinued

Often Doesn't Switch Off at Boiling Depending how much Water is in it – As others have said it displays erratic behaviour with the thermostat - should never have been a fault but somehow it is. The kettle will sometimes happily boil for a few minutes before it trips the thermostat. That's your power being wasted turning your water into steam for no reason. Also they use a very cheap and poorly designed hinge system… Read more

made from plastic that with the steam heat can break easily. You won't get that smooth opening action after that happens. I would not recommend this kettle. I understand there is a new model since so I don't know if either of these issues have been fixed. Even a K Mart $10 kettle I have manages to consistently cut off when the water boils.

You would expect and should get a better quality product for around the $ 140 I paid. No more Breville kettles for me.

Shattered Glass – We have a lot of Breville products and had been extremely happy with the quality over the years until now. We’ve been using this kettle for a year and a half but when pouring water from it this morning, part of the glass spout broke off as I poured. Very disappointing! Show details

Cannot fault this kettle – I purchased this kettle for $160 in August 2014 and have had no problems with it. Only recently however the lid joint broke. I was surprised the glass has held up so well. At first I was extremely reluctant to fill it soon after boiling, but quickly overcame that, we pour our cuppas and fill it right back up again, so the glass must obviously… Read more

Loving it – I use filtered water in all my appliances and find they do not attract any tarnish. I bought the kettle from a Breville shop outlet. I am loving this kettle. It boils to the temperature I need for different teas, coffees, soup etc. I did notice that some reviews complained about the beeping but I have found this is not a problem at all. All in all a purchase I am very pleased with. Show details

Erratic behaviour – I've had this kettle for 5 or 6 years now which I bought as an avid tea drinker. Replaced my previous tea kettle with variable temperatures which developed problems after about 5 to 6 years too. Heating water at temperatures other than boiling takes a long time as it stops to check the temperature several times before continuing. This kettle… Read more

worked fine for about 3 years and now its thermostat is erratic. When it boils, it sometimes doesn't stop boiling, or if you press one button, another lights up. However, I do take very good care of the kettle e.g., I used only filtered water and clean the kettle once a month. I initially used vinegar to clean the limescale but later worried it would mess with the thermostat so have since stopped. This means that limescale builds up at the bottom which is unsightly (this is a clear kettle), but even the descaling cleaning solution from Breville cannot remove.

Expensive dud – Initially the kettle worked fine in our new kitchen - we splurged at the time and I liked the design and how it looked in the kitchen. Bought the matching toaster - both from Myer. We seldom used the variable temperature buttons and temperature hold Botton. The kettle stopped working properly just out of warranty. Needed to be restarted anywhere… Read more

between 2-6 times to get it to boil properly, randomly beeps and other times will boil continually without automatically shutting off the way it did in the beginning so now I find myself constantly having to watch it while its boiling or non-boiling. Spent $159 at Myer and regret the waste of $...so disappointed to have this lemon sitting in the kitchen and constantly worrying that it might short out or worse..

A good but Expense Glass Kettle – I was pleased when I purchased the kettle, except the cost $140. It works ok and boils quickly and the keep hot function is good. One drawback is the bottom of the kettle tarnishes and I need to do a clean operation (with vinegar) every couple of weeks. I have since purchased a Kogan glass kettle and it does not tarnish and was a third of the… Read more

Update, after talking with a friend I tried removing the tarnish with two table spoons of bi-carb of soda and 500ml of water, I boiled the jug then let it stand for several hours then rinsed a few times, it totally removed the tarnish and it has not returned after two months!

More handle/lid failures – A nice looking unit, good features, but it must have a design or manufacturing problem. Originally bought two kettles, for me and family member, and after three years they both failed. Bits of the lid hinge fell into the kettle, and handles became loose and the lids malfunctioned. Breville offered replacements at $75, and purchased another two in… Read more

mid 2018. Now, after 9 months, my kettle handle has become loose and the lid will not lock down. Something's seriously wrong with this product. Breville are replacing this one with a BRT840 unit under warrantee, and I hope they have addressed the design faults of the BRT830. I'm not holding my breath!

Great looking kettle but erratic behaviour after just 6 months – I bought this kettle from Harvey Norman just 6 months ago (in August 2018). It looks good and, at first, worked properly. But after about 4 months it stopped switching itself off when it reached boiling point, so I had to lift it off the base unit. However, that was okay, but now it is starting to behave erratically. Sometimes it will just… Read more

beep several times for no reason, then it will go off, then come back on. If I move the kettle around on the base unit, it sometimes fixes the problem. Maybe it is a bad connection. However, if I turn the power off, then back on again, it seems to fix it (well, most of the time). I am now worried about leaving the house with the power to it switched on, so I switch it off at the wall socket. I think it's the same old story: heat, vibration, water and steam just don't mix with delicate electronics. Purely electric kettles work just fine. You may have to turn them off yourself when they boil, but they just keep going for years and years. I still have my own one stored away somewhere. Nevertheless, considering that I paid $150 for the "smart" kettle, I should have expected its brain to last a little longer than that, all the same. What am I supposed to do now? Take it back just to get another one that will last only 6 months? The fact that it is still under guarantee is no saving grace. Because of the short lifetime, I can give it only two stars overall.

Excellent features and stylish look – The style of this kettle is sleek and fits in with other stainless appliances. The fact that it is glass means that you can easily determine water level. Had to return it after six weeks – This kettle looks really smart and was not so cheap at $159 from Myers. clean the water kettle. So much effort keeping a house clean the last thing is add more fidgety cleaning of a see through water kettle. Looked great for 3 weeks....Better with a cheaper not see-through kettle as these water deposits are not bad for your health - they are part of the water we drink in Sydney and its as good as it gets. Can you imagine the limescale inside an sophisticated espresso machine. Yet thousands of people drink coffee from these machines every days, usually more than once per day :-)

The Myers attendant wanted to blame me for not cleaning the kettle. But I told her Breville glass kettles are over priced and need lots of cleaning which Breville does not mention, so its misleading to sell it without this extra cleaning warning.

Lid – It boils water, how hard can it be? So it does that OK but so would a $22 kettle. Lid is a downright dangerous issue. When the water is nearly boiling point the lid pops open just like that or worse still it will pop open when you tilt the thing and start pouring. NOT VERY hard to make a big mess with boiling water. I love my kettle – This is the best kettle I have ever had. I love the temperature setting functionality, I love that I'm able to keep the water warm for some time after boiling it, I love how easy the kettle is to clean and use and how quickly it heats up the water. 10/10 would buy again! I also love how easy it was to exchange the kettle when I had an issue, it was no questions asked, return for a new one. So easy. So happy with my purchase!  Show details

Faulty lid 3 times in 4 years! – For $149 I would expect a quality product but so far have had to return 3 times in 4 years as eventually the lid has a problem staying shut. Before this, I loved the fact that it could heat rather than boiling but have now given up.  Show details

You will need the extra warranty as I am on my 3rd one in 3 years!!!!! – This kettle offers several temperature selections. We bought this simply for this fact. However. This is not the first one we had to buy. After a while (around the year mark ) the kettle just keeps boiling despite what temperature you select. The buttons stopped working after that. I have had the same fault in the other two kettles but due to the store's procedures, I am stuck with this horrible thing every time it breaks down.  Show details

Like it, but some reliability issues [Lid sticks [FIX], sometimes over boils] – Clear Glass is great. Temperature selection is great, but not super accurate. Not the fastest boiling kettle, but thats neither here nor there. Good to be able to see the kettle, and yes you are more likely to keep the scale deposits down when it is really easy to see. Great for making espresso coffee so the water is not over boiled first! … Read more

NOTES:

* Lid sometimes jams - THE FIX... perhaps a "stiction" thing where the release is, but alarming when it first happens. No matter how much you press the release, nothing happens. Here is the solution: right where the circular stainless steel lid sits inside the black ring near the handle, and opposite the release button, there is a small gap. gently insert the tip of a blunt knife between the stainless steel lid and the black ring and this will release the stuck latch.

Once you have done this you can easily see where and why this happens.

* Appears to continue to boil past settings - the temperature sensor appears a bit slow to reset at times - just make sure you also don't accidentally set the "keep warm" button. And the keep warm button does not continuously boil, by the way.

* Scale - visible of course!!! it is glass. If you don't like using chemicals, then a simple way to clean scale is to boil half a lime or a lemon in the kettle (with water of course). The citrus oils plus the juice does a good job of clearing scale.

Early days yet - was a Xmas present but fingers crossed it keeps on working. [I had a Shark Kettle with temperature control from 45ºC to boil in 5ºC increments - only reason it went to God after 10+ years was that the plastics had deteriorated with the oxidation due to the constant high temperatures of boiling water - hence the choice of a kettle with the glass]

Good kettle until it stopped working after 1 year – I bought this kettle for it's ability to heat water to different temperatures i.e. 80-100 degrees. It worked well at this for just over a year before it stopped working properly. The buttons stopped responding all of the time and the kettle would beep and appear to be doing things it wasn't prompted to do. Works ok – Nice looking kettle, working fine after two years. A litlle slower than our last kettle to come to the boil but it is handy to have the different temperature settings.
