Breville Smart Toast BTA820

A very good toaster – I bought a BTA820 two slice toaster in March 2012, and it has been very good all of the time. Unfortunately it has expired in August 2022, so it gave faultless service for 10 years. I have traced the fault to a solid state switch which controls the heating elements - everything else is working. There are no replacement parts available. I believe… Read more
it is important to keep it clean inside - I regularly blow it out with compressd air. However, because it it so complex I can see if it became clogged with crumbs and the like, it could easily give trouble. I have replaced it with the most recent model BTA 825, and if it lasts 10 years I will be happy.
UNEVEN toasting – after just one year the toaster only toasts on one side. No very satisfied. It is so hard to find a toaster that toasts both side evenly. This was supposed to be a best rated toaster-NOT. Show details
Don't buy this product – Have the same issue as many consumers. one side toasting only because of faulty PSB. Not on warranty anymore and Breville USA customer service offered 20% off MSRP which is more than going on Amazon. They offered 40% as final offer and informed me they were closing the ticket. Byebye! I wrote to the global customer care VP Aaron Wanek who never… Read more
responded to my request. Bad service is all I will remember from this organisation. Built in China - Sold by USA and serviced by nobody. Too bad cause the design is very nice and its a shame to trash a 200$ device for a faulty PCB. Its bad policy and bad for the environment. I'm having it fixed by a local electronic repair shop.
Very Happy With This – I like my toast lightly toasted and after trying several models and brands, this one has come up trumps! All of the other ones we tried would burn fruit toast even at the lowest setting, but this one toasts fine. We have the 2 slot version and it has been going for 3 years now. The toast is cooked a little uneven but I prefer this to over… Read more
cooked.
We don't use the crumpet mode so I can't comment on this. I also agree that the toast does get slightly browner on the same setting after a couple of rounds of toasting.
Not happy – Have this toaster for 2 years. Not used every day but often upset after using it. I do toast on Number 1 , and is very Dark. Nearly every time start smell as burny and is Dark as burny too , my bread fishing often in the Bin, or half of the bread after the toasting i need ti cut off and eat only little amount of it.I decided to put this toaster to the Bin today , have enough!!!
Perfect all round bread cooking – So far so good after five months of use. Happy to report that the toasting results are good. Toast is evenly brown and the "little bit more function" is handy. Crumpets cooked well. The only negative is the slide button used to select the cooking time is easily moved so if your handling your toaster a bit in between use you may want to check what… Read more
position the slide button is in before use as it is very easy to move unintentionally and you may end up with overcooked bread.
I haven't tried the defrost function yet but overall I am happy with the toaster. It gives a little bell to let you know when it's ready which is a first in any toaster that I have owned before.
Oh- the unit is fairly heavy too which gives it a robust feel.
Toast of the century – The old toaster finally shagged out after years of burning the edges of my fingers trying to get slices out. I liked it as it was a wide long slot machine but it never recovered from the crumpet setting - always underdone on one side even when not selected. I don't know why but a toaster is not high enough on my must-have needs list to warrant… Read more
scrapping something that sort of works well enough.
So I checked Choice's most recent toaster reviews and went to the shops but wouldn't you know it, those darned retailers read Choice as well, as I would say they deliberately removed any unit tested from their shelves, just to confuse you, so you'll buy more junk. So rather than make a rash poor quality decision, I perused the range on offer, selected a few I thought I liked and went home to check online. My smart phone wasn't with me so I suppose I'm not smart enough to have prevented the additional travelling.
My selection rationale - not the same toaster as before (when I thought about it, I really wanted a single long slot see-through toaster but I knew that wasn't going to happen after visiting the shops) at a baby bear price - not too high, not too low. My partner insisted on normality and wanted a 2 slice jobby.
I decided that DeLongi looked like rubbish and it was cheap and others over $200 were out or were too big, too may slots or wanted to boil an egg as well.
I had good recent experience with the Breville brand and I admired their Smart Toaster with 2 year warranty to cover the problems the tricked up electronic content potentially offered, which at $138 everywhere in Australia was same as at the shop without the freight, so I went back and bought it. Cherry Red. Sales assistant brought it out of the warehouse and knocked off $10 without me asking. I was pleasantly surprised.
I was even more happier when I made crumpets on my return fresh out of the box. You've heard the term 'f of the Century' (Basic Instinct), (I'm the one who always gets the park of the century right slap bang out in front- pitty it's not thats lotto luck) well this was the 'Toast of the century'! My god, what a revelation. Crunchy top and soft unctuous interior and almost crisp bottom. WOW. A vast improvement over any crumpet I had ever eaten before. Same goes for normal toast. Light and crisp. Grungy and interesting. Anything but normal. What had I been missing out on? A few extra hundred kilos probably!
So, I recommend the Breville Smart Toaster. The fruit bread, frozen, lift and look and just a little bit more buttons are great. It's quiet, it's simple, it produces high quality toast, it looks good, it's easy to tweak, it's responsive, it's a space saver on the benchtop, it works, it offered double the warranty of others, what's there not to like! This is the sort of thing consumers like me like.
Been great ever since - 18 months now.
Great toaster that has stood the test of time – I've had this toaster for more than 2 years and it's still great. I use all the functions and they work well. The "A Bit More" button is genius. I put all kinds/sizes/thicknesses of bread as well as crumpets in it and they always come out perfectly. Mine's in black and it still looks great, no chips or marks and it doesn't get obvious… Read more

Having never spent more than $40 on a toaster before, the price tag was certainly the biggest drawback, even though I bought it on sale for about $100 (for the 2-slice version). I think I've gotten good value out of it though and I'd definitely buy it again.
Love my 4 slice toaster – Has all the features I need and use We use it often makes eating warm toast as a family easy. Love it!
Amazingly it works! – Our old Sunbeam finally died and new Sunbeams looked cheap so we decided on a Breville Smart Toaster - it takes 2 slices which you insert, press a button, bread goes down, bread comes up and is always toasted to the same degree which for us is crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle. Slots could be a bit deeper as we bake our own bread and… Read more
the slices are too large so we cut them in half. Toasts crumpets great too with less heat on the back side. Not the quickest of toasters but the wait is worth it.
It is a pretty flash looking machine and appears reasonably solid. All buttons click nicely and darkness control work evenly.
Because of our bad experiences with all electrical appliances of late we took an extended warranty out with the toaster so we have 2 + 4 = 6 years guaranteed.
First one was faulty, second was good! – So we purchased this toaster as our other one had broken down and was not toasting right. It was working okay for the first day and then all of the sudden the toast would not come back up and the lights would not go off, also toasting on one side. I took a video of the toaster and what it was doing and we exchanged it for another machine. The one… Read more
we exchanged it for is the one we are currently still using (same model) as previously stated, we give things another go however if it breaks down the second time, we usually want to get rid of it. This one is working well and I LOVE the Little bit more function. I have to say though having two of the smart products from Breville break down on us (the kettle and toaster) is making us think twice about what we buy!!!
Great Toaster, No Issues – Got given this toaster as a gift and it works fantastically. It is used every day and have had nil issues with it. The timing adjuster works well and is quick and easy to change to make it easy to swap between people. It looks fantastic on the kitchen bench and matches all the other Breville kitchen appliances. The metal construction feels… Read more
solid and has a high quality feel to it, it is also really easy to wipe down and does not blacken like a lot of other toaster's.
The crumb tray tucks away nicely to the point where you wouldn't even know it was there unless you were told about it.
All round a great quality product which I would recommend to anyone.
Great toast every time – We've had this toaster (2-slice model, cranberry colour) for about a year now. From day one it has produced lovely, evenly toasted toast. It's pretty reliable too - if you used the same bread and same setting, you get the same toast. I was a bit worried the push-button lowering was one more thing to go wrong, but all good so far. We are very happy… Read more
with it. Even toast. Reliable settings. Countdown lights are good. 'A bit more' button is useful. It looks good. Nothing yet

Good looks but disappointing performance! – We did lots of research before buying this toaster. After a few months it toasting more on one side than the other. Just past our two year warranty and the thing has an electrical short (bright white burning element) that has tripped the circuit breaker. Our very nice looking, poor performing toaster is headed for the bin. I will not be… Read more
investing in another Breville as I expect a toaster to last longer! Not a quality product. Don't buy it based on looks!! Nice styling, finish. Toasts unevenly. Electrical fault!
Not reliable – We have owned this toaster for 4 weeks and as it serves only 2 of us it is only used about 1-2 times per day .In this time it has got stuck 3 times requiring vigorous shaking to clear the automatic rise function ,today it has short circuited and tripped our switchboard .I will settle for a manual eject model for my next toaster. Robust constructin and design Unreliable
Mmm . . . shaking it just might have caused the short circuit.
