Simply toasts evenly and quickly – Our last Breville sandwich press lasted 10+ years, and we decided to upgrade to the latest version. I looked at the other brands, but in reality they didn't look that good. The new one looks and feels the same, but that's where normality stops. This one heats up twice as quick and heat distribution is evenly spread across the whole surface. … Read more
Results are just what you want. Quick golden toasties done even before you can get all the stuff back in the fridge.
Cleaning is simples. The only issue is getting over exuberant during the cleaning process and touching the hot (dam hot) surface - ouchies. Maybe supervise younglings if they're attempting to make 'something - usually with lava cheese'.
I suppose if I was wanting an improvement for the future (when I buy my next one in 2033) I would like the toasties to eject from the machine once ready, thus eliminating the embarrassment of swearing.
The Breville Toast/Melt Sandwich Press BSG520BSS is one of the best sandwich presses one can buy – Overall, the Breville Toast/Melt Sandwich Press BSG520BSS is a well designed and constructed unit. The brushed stainless steel Floating Top Plate is well balanced and cooks evenly, automatically adjusting perfectly to all sizes of sandwiches every time. The added bonus is that the Top Plate is heat-insulted which is a unseen safety feature. Heat… Read more
distribution for cooking is excellent, providing an even cook on both sides. This unit has large non-slip feat - the largest I have seen in its class. Heats up and cooks fast. Breville have confidence in this product as they offer a 3-year guarantee on registration of purchase which in itself says a lot. The only one single problem is that it cooks too quickly so if one does not monitor the cooking process, the outsides will be done before the inner part of the sandwich. So one has to periodically switch off and back on at the wall to get a proper through-cook. That all-important missing feature that would qualify the Breville The Toast/Melt Sandwich Press BSG520BSS for a five-star rating, is a thermostat. Other than that, one of the best sandwich presses one can buy and an absolute pleasure to use.
Does what it says on the box – This is a really good sandwich press. It is solidly built, well designed and makes a great toastie. Its best feature is the variable height adjustment, you set the slide at the right to the thickness you want, and the top half of the press can't drop any lower than your set height. It means your toastie is "pressed" but not "squashed." I used to… Read more
have a cheap Aldi press that worked OK but had no height control, the darker it toasted, the flatter your sandwich. The Breville Toast & Met makes it "just right" every time.
The other advantage is, as it has a higher power heating element, you don't need to butter the outside of the sandwich. Just make the sandwich and put it in the toaster, the hotplates are hot enough to brown the bread without needing to butter the bread. This means lower fat sandwiches and less mess to clean up.
I occasionally use it to cook other things, it does great salmon fillets - place a piece of baking paper on the lower plate, add your salmon fillets, then another piece of baking paper over the top. Set the height adjustment so the top plate is resting on the fish fillet but not squashing it down. The result is perfectly cooked salmon fillets.
I highly recommend this product.

Wonderful sandwich maker – Had one of these sandwich makers before and I wore it out so good. It is also great for reheating pizzas, crisps up the base and heats the topping, wonderful well worth the money. Have not tried the melting cheese yet, but will do so in the future. I have the 2 slice model big enough for the two of us. Show details
Cafe-style lunches at home! – I'd accrued a load of Qantas points and decided to treat myself. Now I would be lost without my Breville. I don't like the triangle toastie makers because I don't like double-buttering, and I prefer wraps. With this sandwich press, you don't have to butter the outside of the bread/wrap, and you can pop any kind of bread/wrap/tortilla in there. … Read more
I know this isn't Masterchef, but to prove my point about its versatility, I made a wrap with apple slices and cinnamon, and it came out like a little strudel. Add a dash of cream, and you've got a lovely dessert in 5 minutes.
I use this every day, and haven't had any faults or scratches in the 8 months I've had it.
UPDATE - it's now April 2017 and I've had this sandwich press over 5 years. I use it in the morning to toast banana bread/waffles and on weekends for toasties, so it has had a fair amount of use. The non-stick still looks like new and I've never had a problem. We also have the same appliance at work, which gets a real hammering. It's been in service for over 2 years and also looks like new. Highly recommended. Non-stick, easy to use, versatile
