A Mixed Bag – I purchased my CMX227 second hand. The seller was a commercial operator. He claimed "no expense spared on maintenance". It had 700hrs on the clock, but I was hoping that a commercial machine should be good for at least thousand hours. Then reality set in. We put the machine to work. It worked well. It is indeed a ride on brush cutter. I rode… Read more
happily (slowly) through blackberries up to two metres high. It dealt with slopes up to 30 degrees. The downsides........ The lack of design to keep trash and dust out of it makes a lot of work. The air cleaner needs cleaning every hour or so of hard work. Clippings keep getting into the engine cooling air intake, in spite of buying an after market rubber mat that installs under the seat. Setting aside some rather rough attempts at welding up cracks in the cutter deck, by the previous owner, the fitting of the swing away side guards have worn badly. The pivots and latches have worn badly (not solid enough to last). Grass clippings make their way into everything around the engine and transmission, requiring a lot of work to clean. Now, I have a worn steering rack. It seems that the steering rack never had lubricant, or any way to lubricate. Not surprisingly, it had worn badly. And a replacement rack is going to cost a lot. The drive shaft to the cutter deck has worn. The universal joint yokes are flopping on their shafts. At the PTO end, the spline has worn away. No provision for greasing it. You have to sit down before asking the price of a replacement shaft. I think that the steering rack and the drive shaft are hardly up to "commercial use". Summary: This machine has great potential, but there are aspects of design that make it not the greatest value for dollar. If only the manufacturer attends to the functional aspects, and quality issues, it would be magnificent. Also, the price of parts in Australia is very high. All things to consider before buying a $24,000 lawnmower.
Hard yakka made easier – Good Bye Whipper snipper - HELLO CMX 227! Two days of hard yakka reduced to two hours - wow! Finally got snooze time! Rough and ready easily steered, compact and manoeuvrable Razorback ate everything in its wake leaving fresh mulch in a single cut. Tackled the 35 deg pitch rocky, slippery landmass with two ft high grass and spat out dead branches… Read more
bigger than my biceps - with ease. Sun was going down and didn't want to stop. Got cocky and decided to give it more hard yakka but didn't survey the land as recommended in operators manual before mowing. Got stuck when the front wheels went over the edge and the cutting deck suspended over two foot pile of dirt. I didn't panic. Ten minutes later, the trusty Razorback Winch sang the redemption song! Don't buy the razorback without this beauty. Always read the Manual before using! Salesman tried to save me money by talking me out of double wheels. He had surveyed my property a week before and concluded they weren't needed. Bloke had no taste for suaveness, sophistication and sexy looks! Double wheels added the gutsy 'bite me look' and the 'feeling safe' on the steep whether mowing up down or sideways! So far, nothing mechanically wrong to speak off and don't expect any either. Before buying a Razorback, do your homework, read the engineering and mechanics of it and get a demo done- at your property. Two hours of hard yakka - fuel gauge hardly moved. Razorback is expensive but you pay for what you get - quality! Have Fun!
55 hours old and has died – I'm over here in G.B. Bought my CMX227 2.5 years ago. Has been a brilliant bit of kit until recently, have about 4 acres of assorted sloping terrain, up to 45 degrees on the real bad bits, grass/scrub, this machine is used once or twice a year on the real nasty bits to keep it looking trim. Now the crunch, mine has the Subaru Robin EH65D 22hp… Read more
engine. If you take off the air cleaner/filter you will see 3 x M6 screws that hold the filter base to the carburetor. well you guessed it one of the screws vibrated loose and as having no where to go, trapped inside the air filter, chose the only route possible, down the carb. Good news it got stuck in the valve seat against the open inlet valve. If it would have gone further in would have played ping pong with the piston, head and bore, scrap engine!. There is no sign of locktite on the other screws and I cant believe there is no lock tap on the M6 pins. So other Subaru engine owners be warned, pull your filter off and check these bolts now, I think I'm right as all the Subaru engines are the same in design. Oh and dealer says out of warranty, pulled it apart, fixed the valve, but 3 weeks and waiting on gaskets that are coming from Japan with no predictive delivery date. 55 hours old, machine cost 12,500 GBP that 275 for each hour. Expensive machine!

Perfect for hilly country – The build quality and service received has been exceptional. So far, the machine has delivered on the expectations with the ability to mow all areas I previously only considered with a brush cutter and even on steep slopes, feels solid enough to take on the task. For those with steep country and arm pit undergrowth, I think you will be pleased with the outcome with one of these machines. Show details
Fantastic piece of equipment but it can get bogged and has some soft metal – I bought my top of the range Razorback with a winch kit after many months of consideration and a thorough test drive. Our property is in South Gippsland in Victoria, 'hilly' terrain would be an understatement. The land we purchased had been unkept for 15 years. It is was complete with bracken, fire weed and of course acres and acres of… Read more
blackberry up to 3m high.
I've reclaimed more than 5 acres of infested land using this piece of wonderfully engeineered equipment. Mostly with ease.
We all know this is a fantastic machine, however after just 20 hours of use I did have to have it repaired under warranty for a freyed winch cable, bent deck lever, loose bumper, bent side (oh crap this is a steep hill) handle and a bent accelerator pedal.
All was repaired under warranty and the only thing not back to perfect is the 'oh crap' bar which requires a little more adjustment. I could not speak higher of the warranty service at Wonthaggi Motorcycles.
Obviously I have used the machine to its limits and have had it stuck on slopes no less than 6 times. I would recommend the winch if you have super big slopes - I'm even considering the rollover bar.
If you buy this machine, it will be more than work. It will be enjoyment!
Fantastic engineering and build quality – When I made the decision to start a steep slope mowing business I did a lot of research re one v's the other. Based on the advise given from a few people who own Razorbacks I took the plunge and forked out for the 227. When you start using one of these machines you quickly learn that you will chicken out long before the machine does. I've had… Read more
this one now for 14 months and have done 640 mostly very hard hours. The poor thing looks somewhat battered, I have welded a few things (mostly hair-line cracks in the cutting deck to stop them from growing), gone through only 4 sets of blades, and have serviced the thing at every single interval.
Overall impressions are as a contractor working in very steep terrain regularly cutting through lantana and black wattle but also with one customer who has a property which is like a bowling green. This machine is a brilliant all rounder. Is is extremely well made and very capable (my customers are constantly amaized and what it will do). Servicing is easy (even all the major bolts are 12mm metric). Keep the air filter clean with filter oil because it cops a lot of dust. If you are looking at private mowing jobs it will last you a lifetime (in fact you'll hand it down to your grand kids). As a contractor I am about to buy a new one while this one is still worth something to the next owner. Highly recommended.
March 8th 2018 Update: Let's talk about service
We are now on our second Razorback. The first one I sold with 700 hrs on it and the "new" one now has over 500. Over the three years we've been dealing with our local dealer in Dayboro QLD and the staff from SME mowers, the service has been fantastic. In that time we've had a few parts replaced under warranty and considering the hammering our machine gets we've never had a hint of trouble with the back-up provided by head office. Parts have been sent overnight when possible and I was even able to contact one of their staff over the Christmas break (a big thanks to Brad in Queensland).
I wrote a review on our first Razorback some time ago and my opinion has only been confirmed with the new machine. Very capable, very safe and very solid. A word of advice to those considering purchasing the Grammer suspension seat. If you are likely to spend several hours on the mower without a break, fork out the extra and buy the seat. What a great thing!
The old expression "You get what you pay for" doesn't always ring true these days. This mower will restore your faith in that expression.
Have operated lots of machinery ,this one supprised me – Great product unstopable .Also operate 50 HP tractor & mulcher razorback 22 HP way ahead.Only been operating as a worker for 5 days on farm and had to look up then write a review Accidendently dropped down wombat burrows engage diff lock and go again. .Just watch the rollbar dosent catch you up.
Unstoppable!!! – This machine is unstoppable! Have had a Razorback (canycom) CMX227 for a couple of years now & still can't believe it, Expect to pay $20k for the 227 but I am now told you can get the same machine with less horse power for $13K :( would have done me. Hit rocks most days I mow & have also hit an old car bonnet ect... all with no damage! They say… Read more

- down side... you need to know when to stop because the machine keeps going... owch yes I got a little over confidant - ware long sleeves when mowing lantana :(
