Too many design flaws - regretful purchase – Wish I'd read the reviews first! As mentioned in other reviews, this Crossray Electric BBQ has some serious design flaws. I previously used a Weber Q gas bottle BBQ, but wanted to try something electric. Purchased online for a significant discount at $449 (thankfully!). Comes 90% assembled, just need to insert reflector panels and plate/grill,… Read more

which is a good thing, however the lid on mine was slighly warped and did not sit completely flat on it's two bump stops. Whilst the Crossray looks sleek and modern, it has some serious design flaws, the most obvious being no temperature control, it's either on of off, that's it. You can have one or two bars operating, but they are for each plate or grill, and you don't get a choice, it's back element on first and front element second. The BBQ gets seriously hot to 300C when on, so it cooks fast. Have successfully cooked up steak, chicken, fish, prawns. It's satisfactory for fast grilling, but forget ever trying to do a slow cooked roast over a number of hours, it's just not possible. Secondly, the tray basin beneath the elements is very shallow, so get used to flare ups from fat/oils/marinates igniting and spoiling the flavour of your cooking, burning oil is not the same taste as flame grilled!! Thirdly this BBQ is a nightmare to keep clean, and clean it you must, after just about every use, due again to the shallow nature of the basin tray. And as the metal rods holding up the plates and protecting the elements are fixed in place, cleaning tends to be a finger jamming nightmare, even if you use aluminium foil to cover the area to aid cleaning as suggested. Replacing that foil each time you clean is such fun! The electric cord is also very short, less than 1 metre, so you better have your power point right where you want your BBQ. Of couse you can use an extension cord, but that can compromise your all weather usage as cord joins and rain aren't a good mix. Finally the very small drip tray is accessed from the rear, which is in an inconvenient postion if you have the BBQ against a wall, and whilst the drip tray collects from a central hole, there are two other holes in the base and seam joins where liquids leak beneath the BBQ and create an oily mess. I cannot recommend this BBQ at all, I wish I could get a refund. Should have stuck with a Weber Q.

Design flaws – I recently bought the CrossRay 2-bar Electric BBQ as I wanted a small, reliable and easy to clean BBQ. This one met all those conditions but in terms of flexibility it was a dismal failure due to some elementary design faults. It’s a simple design, 2 separate heating elements and a switch to control them, what could go wrong. Well how about one… Read more

can only have on 1-bar or 2-bars but you cannot select which single bar to have on, either the front or the back to suit whether one is using the grill or hot plate. Next the element is either on or off, there is no variance to change the temperature (ideally individually for each element). Now this is an electric BBQ and so the switch does everything, or in this case next to nothing. Here’s a suggestion as a design improvement. Put in two switches, one for each element and allow the switch to be graduated to adjust the temperature. It’s not rocket science. The second switch can be positioned where the timer is, which is obsolete nowadays. As it’s only a switch that needs replacing and adding, how about making the improvement able to be retro-fitted so that existing customers can enjoy this significant improvement, that would be nice. Fantastic BBQ! Changed my view on electric barbecues – Having used portable electric barbecues in the past, I was dubious that this could really sear meat like a gas model. I'm very serious about removing all fossil fuels from my home and particularly gas, as it has been linked to all sorts of respiratory and general health issues, so a took a chance on this model. I'm completely amazed at how good it… Read more

is! The BBQ has a proper grate for searing and a solid plate for slower cooking (both cast iron). It comes up to temperature in 15 minutes or less with both burners on. If you then switch it to the "Low" setting one burner is extinguished. With the lid down, it will then hold a perfect 180 degrees celcius. I cooked three steaks on the grate section for 5 minutes each side and they were perfectly done to medium. My guests told me these were the best steaks they ever had. I had to agree! Everything seems to be very well constructed, especially the "Kitchen" module. This has a strong steel frame and ventilated steel side panels. There is plenty of shelf space to store your utensills and cleaning gear.It has 6 wheels underneath for moving around and also feet you can wind down for levelling. The bench top is 60mm thick and finished in a grey, stone-colours laminex - very solid! The kitchen model comes with a great little bar fridge. It's stainless steel with a double glazed tempered glass door. It gets nice and cold and has a cool blue ambient light inside, that you can turn off when not required. It will hold a slab of beer and/or soft drinks as well as wine bottles if you remove the bottom shelf. The fridge door is self-closing so you'll never have warm beer. Best of all it has a key lock to keep out beer-burglars. All-in-all a great product! The only improvement I would suggest is to include a cover for it, when not in use. You can order a cover from Crossray but it costs $99. BTW, the BBQ was $500 cheaper at Bunnings (special order) than the online price from Crossray.

The best electric bbq I’ve ever used – I love this bbq, I use it on my boat, it just cooks beautifully, the heat is so even and totally useable. Works well with the lid up or down for roasting. With both elements on and the lid down, it easily reaches 240 degrees which is perfect crackling territory. Can’t recommend this product enough, watch the YouTube video of Billy the Greek doing lamb cutlets on one of these! Show details

CROSSRAY a revolution in the BBQ world – Awesome electric BBQ cooks just like coals. Perfectly cooked lamb, steak, salmon, vegetables etc. & food retains its juiciness. Convenient, clean, quick and no hassle of gas bottles. Compact. A winner. Show details

Poor quality - DO NOT BUY – I purchased this unit early in 2021 and during unpacking the obvious poor build quality made me a little nervous from the start. The unit's casing had many sharp edges and the stainless steel protective plastic coating hadn't been fully removed in a number of places. The control knobs were set at different heights above the casing and when I… Read more

removed them I found the holes had been punched thru the casing instead of drilled, leaving sharp upturned edges. Also, the screws holding it together were countersunk head type which protruded from the casing. On the lid these protruding screw heads fouled the rear heat deflector bracket which also had a bow in it and together these faults prevented the lid from staying fully open. The protruding screws heads also scratched away the black paint on the deflector bracket which would likely result in subsequent rust. Once assembled the cooking grates rocked up and down several millimetres indicating warping, not sure if the problem was in the grates or the casing. I spent quite a bit of time removing all the remaining protective coating and found some areas where it had been sandwiched between the sheets of stainless during fabrication and couldn't be removed. This was annoying because it would likely melt and smoke once the unit became hot. I very nearly packed up the unit to return it straight away but had spent so long researching and reviewing these BBQ's that I convinced myself I'd get over the build quality once I'd BBQ'd something. Unfortunately when I plugged it in and turned it on it immediately tripped the earth leakage circuit breaker in the meter box. I tried several different power outlets in case there was a fault in the house wiring, but without success. I plugged in a series of halogen work lamps to test if the circuit was being overloaded but the ELCB didn't trip under a load of 2,100W, nearly 150% more than the BBQ draws. So without being able to actually cook on it I packed it up and returned it for a refund. These units are manufactured overseas and its apparent that neither quality nor functionality are checked when delivered to Australia. Very disappointed with Crossray products, clearly not manufactured to the high standards their marketing claims.
