Domain FBC-90

Do you always get what you pay for? – Just had installed the Domain 90cm freestanding oven, bought at a snip at Catch. At just $1200 (with free delivery!!) we were naturally hesitant as to the quality of this product. Our budget, as slim as it was, confined us to the usual suspects of cheap (and occasionally nasty) 90cm ovens. However, reviews of other Domain appliances in this forum placated our anxieties somewhat. The unit itself looks every inch a more expensive oven, the black glass to the oven in particular is quite pleasant (if you can describe the look of an oven as such) and adds a touch of class to our aged kitchen. A roast last night which was our test drive: no histironics here, gentle roasting rather than the fierce splattering we've been used to. And the lighting inside is the best we've experienced. Perfect for checking on pastries and breads. Oven glass door lifts off easily for cleaning, as does the inner glass itself. The range is fairly bog standard but the control knobs are large and comfortable. Ignition is rapid as is the comforting noise it emits, rather like a speedy staccato. My only concerns (at this point in time) are the screw on legs. However, Domain include strengthening brackets which should eliminate bowing. Our last encounter with a cheap oven which we had installed some years ago uncovered a particularly nasty surprise in that there was little or no insulation against the heat from the oven. The hob being all but untouchable. I have no idea if Standards have since tightened regulations. But I am happy to report that the Domain oven door and the hob are barely warm to the touch when the oven is firing. I guess you don't always get what you pay for when you buy cheap.
