Epic Skateboards
1 review
I guess I can summarise my experience with: avoid the small businesses when purchasing an eSkateboard, particularly if you do not have a chance to see the board before purchasing. I bought a Dominator 4000+ from Epic Electric Skateboards a while back and initially it seemed a great product until the drive belt snapped for no known reason. The board has always been looked after (both while using it and maintenance after riding) and I find it almost laughable when I recall the promo picture of an airbourne rider on this board. In reality both drive belts would have snapped when they hit the ground. At best this supposedly "new product" actually appeared to be refurbished with rusty screws, and structurally, it appeared to be a cheap knock-off of a more reputable eSkateboard. The front bearings were dry and 2 of the wheels had a slight wobble that the vendor claimed is near-impossible to straighten out. The front and rear wheels appeared to also be misaligned which would only serve to limit the claimed top speed, ie it's like trying to drive a car with the handbrake partially engaged. To his credit, the vendor did send me a replacement belt but that seemed to be the end of my after-sales support. The board is technically still in warranty but he's pulled the website and is uncontactable, however I believe he's trying to sell these boards via FaceBook. I have "patched the thing up" as much as I can and will need to have a repair kit with me at all times when (not if) the belts break again. This board is unreliable and should not be driven at any distance as it's a heavy tow to drag back to where you started. This happened to me. It's a pity... the board "looks solid" but in reality it falls short in many critical areas. In short, don't buy from this vendor. Go to a store where you can see the product for yourself and where you may get better after-sales service, if required.
Follow-up · The total board weight is approx. 25kg. Carrying it to the beach from where my car is parked is a bit of a challenge but it's worth it once you get going. It really is fun to ride. It's just unfortunate the quality and workmanship was substandard and that I now feel the need to carry tools and spare parts each time I ride. I'm continuing to research alternate repair options and was fortunate to find a supplier of suitable drive belts. When considering postage from the US, the cost per drive belt worked out to about $10AUD each. The drive gear (which drives the rear wheels via the belt connected to the electric motor) appears to be nylon and the vendor (when he assembled the board) appears to have over-tightened the bolts causing the gear's center to distort and rub against the metal frame. I think this is why the board "threw a belt" the other day. I'm not sure I'll get a replacement gear as it's fairly specific to this board's construction but at least one side needs it as there's a slight wobble when you spin the wheel... probably not good for the lifespan of the drive belt. I found the vendor's Facebook page after he apparently shut down his website. Previously, you could make a purchase for one of these boards on his website but I don't know how he's organizing any purchases via Facebook now. Personally I'd never buy anything from a Facebook-based vendor after my credit card company intercepted an attempt by someone to steal $1000AUD from my credit card via Facebook. The attitude he demonstrated in my last phone call to him shows someone who does not possess a business maturity to deal with client problems experienced with his product. I seriously doubt he has the capability or willingness to assist any further. Again, don't buy from small vendors as you'll likely experience similar to what I did. I shouldn't need to do all this repair work myself considering it's still under warranty.
