Fisher & Paykel AquaSmart

I bought this machine as an interim machine, second hand for $300 over 7 years ago from the Salvos. It has been outstanding in its performance. The only thing I replaced last year were the spring arms after the missus grew tired (and I) of the machine tripping persistently on spin cycle. Since then, no other issue and should I need to replace in the future, I just hope the next AquaSmart is just as good :) Show details · 1
So Tired Of This Machine!! – Having purchased this machine 9 years ago, it has given me a long good service, my only complaint has been that despite my very careful loading of the clothes, it seems to wash and then stop and beep to inform me that the clothes have bunched up in one spot and I have to reorganise the load in order for it to keep going, (sometimes twice a load… Read more
which becomes very frustrating,) I don't overload the machine, no more than 3 bath towels plus some undies and it still stops at least once each load, my kids keep telling me to change to a new machine, but basically it still works and I only ever had one repair man to fix a minor problem . I hope that the manufacturers have changed the design before I start looking for a new machine!!
The old girl's still going – Close on 20yrs ago we purchased this machine. At the time I was repairing machines so I took the inner drum out and put more glue around the seal as well as all through the years I give it a birthday which means taking the inner drum out and water blasting both drums clean and putting new glue on the seal. People still think it's a new machine. It's never thrown an error code - one gripe would be that it should've come with a soft-close lid. Show details · 1

Works better than the 8kg variant – Many years ago I owned an 8kg AquaSmart (DW1 model) from new and was not pleased with the amount of issues it had… ended up giving it to my father and it only lasted for a total of about 7 or 8 years. Fast forward about 15 years (and significantly lower financial security) later, my Samsung 6.5kg top loader had died the day before New Year’s Eve;… Read more
so I trawled through Facebook Marketplace for a quick, cheap replacement and this AquaSmart 7kg (DW1) was for sale.
At first I was a little hesitant due to my experiences with the first AquaSmart; but it was less than $200 and the seller offered to drop it off at my house for free, so I thought “why not?” It was at my door by New Years Day
Turns out I made a good bet! I notice this machine’s “smart drive” and cycles behave differently than my last one, resulting in less errors and out-of-balancing (I’ve always properly levelled my machines)
My textiles are significantly better cleaned and rinsed compared to the last one - in both high efficiency and conventional modes!
One thing I wished this machine had was a quick cycle - regular and heavy duty cycles run for almost an hour, some even longer like bulky
Sturdy Machine – We purchased this machine as a wedding present in March 2007. It had worked most of the time without fuss. Like others it did suffer from the black lint being left on the clothes, but that may also be due to too much detergent/fabric softener being used. The 'Clean Me' cycle was useless as I had to pull the inner bowl out periodically as the… Read more
soap scum build up was disgusting. The wife thought it was a new machine after I did that. The only faults I had were in 2016, when the display module failed then in 2018/2019 the RPS failed underneath; they were simple fixes. Then finally in 2023 the control board burnt out (though the code on the display stated it was the water inlet valve but that tested ok) blowing a fuse, a resistor and some mosfets. I couldn't fix this, and a local electronics tech could not source the parts to fix it. Even though I could of purchased a brand new control board, it was finally time to let it go as the machine had served us well for 16 years. I just hope the new machine is as reliable as my old one.
Has done the job over the last 12yrs but with a few issues along the way – We bought this 7kg top loader 12yrs ago. At the time, I loved the idea of no agitator in the bowl and the preset water efficiency settings. The touch buttons rather than dials to turn were also appealing. I still love the lack of agitator but have felt frustration over twisted clothes & unbalanced loads despite taking care to spread out. I'm… Read more
guilty of overloading at times. The lack of lint filter becomes an issue particularly if you use Cold Wash a lot like me, but provided you make use of the "Bowl Clean" function more frequently than the 100 washes it alerts you on, it's manageable. I found my clothes were not clean enough on a "Regular" cycle or if I used one of the Water Efficient modes (the Efficiency light glows when selected) and used a "Heavy" cycle most frequently. Over the years we've replaced the control board (approx 7yrs ago by a F&P tech), as well as the suspension rods & main belt drive (approx 3 & 4yrs ago by my "Mr Fixit" husband who purchased the genuine parts off eBay). Reading other reviews these seem to be the most common parts needed. He swore when the motor went we'd buy a new machine. A month ago an ominous clunking starting and the machine could no longer move/spin but could fill and drain water fine - we took that as a sign it was time to move on. After our new purchase, he pulled the F&P machine apart to find the only thing wrong with it was the main bolt needed tightening under the bowl - tightened, works great, now selling 2nd hand.

Lasted me almost 18yrs!! – Today I retire my beautiful Fisher & Paykel 8kg Aquasmart washing machine. It gave me faithful service all these years and I’m very sorry to see it go. Nine grandkids later and hundreds and hundreds of loads of washing done to perfection. The motherboard gave up in early 2022 and I was lucky enough to score a 2nd hand one, but that has also thrown in the towel now. Best washing machine I ever owned!! Show details
Best appliance I have ever had - bring it back so I can buy again – My machine is 18 years old and still works, but has just started to make an error msg requiring service. As she’s older and we really need a bigger machine I’ve started looking. I love the agitatorless design! Stuff never gets tangled due to this snazzy feature and the button design is so simple. If it was still available, I’d buy it again and… Read more
now my poor old girl is starting to stroke out I’m looking and can’t find anything in the market like her. Can not believe some of these negative reviews, I’ve not any had issues like that at all. I give her 5 stars.
Takes it all – We have moved numerous times of the 11 years I have had this machine. Loaded on and off trailer and walked on its corners and it hasn't missed a beat. Just need to know how to get into the bowl, I lost a chain when I washed my pants. Show details

Fisher and Paykel AuquaSmart WL80T65CW2 purchased April 2010 – I worked for Fisher and Paykel in the accounts dept when they had their Head office in Auburn Sydney. I left F&P as they were relocating to Clevland QLD. They were a great company to work for and stood by their products. I always purchased Fisher and Paykel until I bought the AquaSmart Washing machine in 2010. I found this machine to be the worst… Read more
machine I have owned with multiple repairs over the time I have owned it. In fact I could and should have purchased another machine earlier for the costs of the repairs it had needed. The fact that it does not have an agitator means that sheets, sleeves jeans ect get tangled up with one another. No lint filter means lint is all over the clothes after washing towels. Or worst still the water pipe gets blocked and the machine doesn't empty completely of water leaving clothes wet.
Nursed along for 14 years – When we received the Aquasmart it was pretty innovative and we liked the top load ease with the front loader benefit. Lasted 14 years but that is because we really pushed it. Finally when it began cutting the power to the washing machine we called it quits. This unit had a water saver feature but we didn't use it as the detergent and lint seemed… Read more
worse if you did. Also the clothes didn't wash well so it was better to just run it on a regular wash. We could not use all the features as if you used the sheets wash it refused to lock (switch it to normal and it worked). We became very frustrated with it and you could not leave it in good faith it would complete a full cycle. We used it for typical family washing, towels and bed linen. It had a good spin feature initally, but got worse over time. The system was on a hard level floor and still wobbled itself around. Over time we had 3 services to attempt to fix the display/wash cycle reads and even the technician said to just run it on normal wash and gave up when he could not solve the lock issue. The lock hook was pefectly straight and worked intermittedly. a real hassle.
About 5 years in the lock feature then needed to be completely nursed .. so every turn on we waited until it attempted to lock, then failed (cycle will not progress unless machine self locks), then pressed start again until it finally worked, and it would continue.
Then the balancing became more dodgy and it began to be very noisy when running. You could hear if it was on at any point in the home. We began to not trust it, both to work or to be safe electronically.
The final straw was the system turning itself completely off mid cycle. With the system making strange noises, the frustration with the lock issue, and only being able to use 'regular' cycle regardless of what we washed for the majority number of its life years - I won't buy another Fisher & Paykel.
This machine I can NOT recommend due to reliability and noise.
I look forward to not having to be close to my future washing machine and limp it through a cycle. I chose a different brand for a replacement.
Interesting experience over the machines life – 8Kg Top loader F&P model WL80T65C It's 12 years old, so could die at any time. Or it could work for a while longer. Thought I might as well add to the reviews for historical purposes. It's being given away, as we've just replaced it while it's still working. Caveats to using the machine, as discovered over time: There's still nothing obviously… Read more
wrong with it, at this stage. ie. no strange noises or behaviour, and nothing has gone wrong with it, over the 12 years. Yes, it's on pretty level ground, and has always been levelled.
As said in a lot of reviews, it has a habit of leaving lint behind. It seems to be a well known problem with top-loaders that don't have the central agitator/lint-filter. I've lived with it, by regularly hosing down the drum, and removing and flushing out the agitator. The 100-wash 'clean-me' cycle that fills the whole tub with hot water is useless. My wife hates it, so has finally bought another machine.
You HAVE to turn OFF the 'high efficiency' water setting button every time for every wash, or it doesn't fill the bowl with enough water to work properly.
You DO have to think about how you position large items in the bowl. ie spread/open sheets out and don't just dump/stuff towels/sheets in a tangle, etc etc. It's not a magic un-tangler.
It's been used on 'regular' for pretty much every wash, which will have stressed the motor/electronics less (I believe that's the general opinion of technicians), and never been left to spin out, if it sounded unbalanced, without repositioning the wash.
It also seems to balance out better on regular - ie I never wash sheets on the 'sheets' cycle, or quilts on the 'bulky' setting, for that matter - they always seem to end up unbalanced. My wife is the only one to have used any other setting. ie 'delicates' - which does seem to work. But every time I found she'd put a blanket quilt, etc on the 'bulky' setting, I'd stop it and re-start it on 'regular'. I almost never had it go unbalanced when I did that, but I'm pretty sure it was 100% of the washes on 'bulky' would go badly unbalanced, and have to be repositioned.

No Words Could Describe It! – After 13 years? Moving from state to state or from house to house even sitting in storage for a period of time. My fisher & paykel aquasmart has never missed a beat. Until now! Show details
Lasted 10 years so far – I’ve had my Fisher & Paykel Aquasmart2 for close to 10 years and the only thing I had get fixed was the control panel within the first 18 months. Aside from that, I’ve had no other mechanical issues used with it. I love the various dedicated wash cycles, such as “soft toys” and “sports shoes”. Probably the only annoying thing about the machine… Read more
is when I wash sheets it’s guaranteed to thump around and then beep to let me know the load is out of balance.
It’s been a reliable workhorse for me. I’m only replacing my machine because I’m moving to a house where I need a frontloader to go under the laundry bench which will probably be another F&P.
Reliable and well designed – I can't understand the number of negative reviews left for F&P washing machines. Perhaps I have been luckier than others. This is our second F&P washing machine. We bought it 12 years ago from Harvey Norman. It has worked well until the last year or so, when the drum would make loud thumping noises when spinning. Googling pinpointed the problem to… Read more
worn suspension rods, which are a wear and tear part. I replaced these and did the silicon straps at the same time. Parts were easily sourced from ebay and there are Youtube videos showing how to replace worn parts. Anyone who is reasonably handy should be able to do this. In an age where appliances are thrown away after the first break down, it is good to see a company support older models with spare parts. Would I buy another F&P? I probably would, though I'd like to see if the build quality under Haier ownership matches that of the older models.
Terrible – There is a good reason these machines (refuse to use washing) are discontinued, they don't wash clothes, period. Has turned me of Fyshe & Paykel products for ever. This product should never have been inflicted on the public. Show details
im glad its discontinued put me of fisher & paykel – its suppose to be water efficient but does not clean clothes proplerly it goes out of balance during spin.It is not realy automatic as always running back to fix problem and re start. In the past i always had hoover I would not get a fisher & paykel again.Good job this model is discontinued. USELESS machine ever built – Bought brand new from Harvey Norman in 2014. Worked well for maybe 2 years, then would consistently go out of balance and needed to move clothes around for it to spin and finish the cycle. Had my previous Kleenmaid machine for 20 years an absolute dream but they don’t sell them in Australia anymore - great shame. This Aquasmart is undoubtedly the… Read more
worst machine ever designed in the history of mankind. If someone tries to sell you this, RUN as fast as you can to a different brand, different shop. Your mental health depends on it.
Seems to be fine for us – I'm interested to know if the people leaving reviews have bought from new or second hand. My dad fixes and repairs, seems to do a good job? Especially if you follow manufacturer instructions and don't use fabric softener!! And put a proper load of clothes in, not overloading. It also helps if you level them out properly using their screw out feet.… Read more
The only reason I'd mark this at 3 stars is the suspension rods could be better, besides that, seems to be fine.
Never worked well from day 1, nursed along the last few years – From day one, never worked with washing powders, must use liquid. High efficiency mode never worked well hence not used. From day one, machine had out of balance type issues which was manageable in the earlier years of ownership (first five or six) but has steadily been getting worst to point to where literally a single pair of socks puts this… Read more
thing out of balance. Requires constant supervision to help it fix it's out of balance load. This machine which was supposed to be water and energy efficient. It is thus not either of those things due to above listed reasons! Was not a cheap machine and we weren't in a financial position to purchase a replacement until recently. Thus our persistence all these years. Quite disappointed with the product to be honest.
Would NEVER buy again – This machine was okay for the first couple of years, then started to thump loudly. Thumping increased in frequency until now I can't even use it - have to 'rebalance' clothes and restart over and over again, cannot even finish one wash due to this. The thumping sound is like a car crashing into the laundry, and the damn machine moves across the… Read more
laundry as if possessed. I'm reduced to washing by hand until I can get time to go to the shop and buy a new one, which won't be another F&P! Oh, I also had to change to liquid detergent as powder detergent always left marks on clothes.

Will go out of my way to never buy a Fisher&Paykel product ever again – Absolute rubbish. Wouldn’t wash a sock. Doesn’t fill. Doesn’t rinse. Doesn’t spin. Junk. Garbage. Wouldn’t even use as a boat anchor. Would happily drop from a great height. Never again will I buy a F&P product and will tell everyone I know to avoid this company like the plague.
Worst machine – This machine is trouble. It tangles clothes, leaves lint on all dark items, is frequently unbalanced and makes loud cluncking noises often, After using for only 2 1/2 years it died. I'm told it is a control panel failure. Not worth repairing so it's going out for hard garbage collection. I'm looking forward to getting a new one. Show details
Built well and very user friendly – Coming on 9 years old, and used multiple times a week, this machine is well suited to big loads. From heavy work clobber to delicates, king size bed sheets and doonas, the range of pre-set options to choose from will have a washing solution for all needs. Being able to tailor those settings to each load makes it very user friendly. And then a… Read more
reminder after 100 washes to run a "clean me" cycle makes putting the clothes in the barrel the hardest part of washing. Always one to wash with liquid (not powder), my only negative is a white residue is sometimes left on black garments - in both warm / cold cycles. Otherwise, the unit is very gentle even on the toughest of loads - a brand I would certainly purchase again in the future.
Read the reviews carefully – Lint left, unbalanced continually, and some clothes and sheets need rewashing after washing. I don't ever have dirty items, but many come out dirty after washing. Its aqua smart meaning frugal with water, but you actually need water to wash clothes. While frugal with water the cycle takes over an hour so expensive on power. Read the reviews… Read more
carefully because it appears some are very questionable in their endorsing such a woeful washing machine that should have been recalled. After staying in Timeshares throughout the world using hundreds of washing machines over the years, this machine is the worst I have ever encountered.
leaves lint and a white residue on darks – Does not wash blacks well, leaves a residue of powder or lint? Have tried cleaning machine several times and changing to liquid but still can't get a good wash on darks. Show details
Excellent machine if used properly – This machine is excellent if you adhere to the manufacturer’s advice. It will not clean well if overloaded and will imbalance if underloaded. Use the suggested detergent in correct amounts. I use this machine 5 times a week with my family’s clothes. I also put through massage towels at a rate of 20 per week. Always a great wash. I also like the programming with is intuitive and the clean cycle keeps me up with when the machine needs cleaned. Show details
The WORST Washing Machine – I agree with what other reviewers have stated about the Aquasmart Model loads being unbalanced. This happens constantly! One load of laundry can take 5 hours due to all of the sensors detecting 'unbalanced' laundry. This washing machine is a joke! We went out today, to buy a Maytag-they have always been reliable. The best washing machine I have ever owned! – This machine is fully programmable, uses very little detergent and will WASH ANYTHING in cold water -backpacks, running shoes, clothes, manchester - including doona covers and delicate handwash-only items & it has never broken down! Its technology (touch control) and frontloader-like economy attracted my attention and it has really paid off. … Read more
Being very happy with my current Fisher & Paykel, I did my due diligence on this new front-loader-like version to save my back and knee joints. I also wanted a more economical and sustainable machine to update my current 12 year old Fisher & Paykel toploader so I researched retailer and manufacturer websites, Choice Magazine and then also the user forums to see what people were saying about the Aquasmart. Although many people were complaining about soap residue, I did not really take them at their word as the underlining problem seemed to be that they were still using toploader washing detergents and/or too much detergent for their new machine. I have used this machine 2-7 times a week and have now had it for over 9 years and have never looked back.
happy with the machine – This washing machine cleans really well.. clothes come out rinsed very well. doesn’t seem to wear out our clothes like other brands. I’ve found a top loader is far easier and more convenient to use. all round a great machine that does what it supposed too. we definately made the right choice. Show details
Worst washing machine should have been recalled – Dud machine bad from day one it took too long to wash and continuously noisy and offbalance and it lasted 11 years was not a heavy user 2 loads a week and black clothes were covered in washing powder every time I used Omo had to use liquid to overcome this issue. My old Simpson lasted 35 years Fisher and Paykel no longer a New Zealand company sold to Haier crap brand will not buy ever again! Show details
loved this machine – I had this machine for almost ten Years. Had a perfect run, not 0ne call out. My towels were always spun well and dried really fluffy, never had a problem with any of the cycles. Why on earth I got the idea to try a different brand. BOSCH what a disarster. When I can afford to I'm going back to FISHER AND PAYKEL. Show details
