Great bikeI’ve had my VT400 for 2 months now and love it. So around town it’s awesome, got good pick up and take off from the lights. I’ve only give it 4 stars because even for me and my small size (5’5” and 70kg) it definitely could use some extra oomph at the top end. I’ve done some super long trips (10+ hours) and she sits fine at 110, even 120km but she is really buzzy at 130, and 140, well she will do it but definitely doesn’t like it. If you’re any bigger than I am I definitely would go for the 750, if I upgrade it’ll definitely be for that. Sp far... Read more I’ve gone 240kms and still not had my fuel light on so fuel economy is pretty decent! Turning is pretty average but then I don’t have much to compare to. Definitely have to say I was comfortable riding, probably 3-4 odd hours at a time before wanting a break
Honda VT400Bike handles well .Great economy and reasonable power. Good riding position. Show details
Shadow vt400Fantastic bike , I too am over 50 and have returned to recreational riding , the blue and white paint scheme is just amazing . The bike is a little under powered but cruises well on 90/100 beautiful for those country scenic roads. The addition of a sheep skin seat cover make the seat a little comfy on longer rides , but that goes for any bike. Show details
Need helpI weigh160kg. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Will the motorcycle be able to hold me. what is the max weight limit? Plz help. need to know asap! also i am just a learner rider. brand new rider. anyone know what the weight limit of a honda shadow vt400? Show details
Best purchase I've ever madeWhen the bike arrived I was apprehensive at it's size but after getting on and doing a few laps around the city I didn't want to get off. As a complete learner who has just started out on a first time bike I highly recommend it as your starter bike. It's had great reviews and everyone I have spoken to has told me I have made the right choice. It is easy to reverse and take into corners and the bike does all the work. A clean piece of machinery that I am now completely in love with and hope to get many, many years out of it.
Easy to handle
Amazing learner bikeA great bike to learn on as my first bike, helps to build confidence and is a breeze to learn on. in my first few hour of learning how to ride (never ridden a motorbike before) only stalled a couple of times and quickly built confidence in my ability to ride and in the bike itself. Truely a pleasure to ride, and as a beginning rider one does not notice the supposed lack of power from the smaller 400cc engine as she goes well with hills and easily out does the standard family car at the lights when you open up the throttle. Definetly enough powe... Read morer for long distance rides at high speeds as well. Down side is that at the time i bought the bike at least it was close to double the price of the popular honda CBR250 at 10,000, and on top of this the first 1000k service was a steep $600. This is more than made up for by the styling of the bike, and hopefully it's future reliability as I imagine i will be happy riding this bike well in the future. Another negative is that despite the overall comfort, the seat has become uncomfortable when doing trips involving more than an hour of continuous riding. This is due to the seat design putting pressure on the tailbone. Although this is probably unavoidable and a factor in all cruiser bikes. Overall an excellent bike, in my opinion worth every dollar of the purchase price and riding it is the highlight of my day. Reliable (Albeit <6 months since purchase), fuel efficient, comfortable Initial purchase and continuing servicing may be more expensive than smaller bikes,
Awesome bike ideal entry to cruisers perfectlove this ride truly great bike A1 Honda 5 Stars. I.m 54 yrs old and just returned to riding after 25 yrs. Gave riding up for the normal reasons Family Work. my chidren grew so I decided to return to riding. looking around a found a dealer Sumoto in Nth.Melbourne great bunch and discovered the VT. fell in love with the lines and all round looks of the bike so I grab a 2000 VT400 Shadow Classic Amercian Edtion and never regretted my choice. truly love my ride that's all I can say.
Nice return to motor cyclesAfter a 25 year break the Honda VT400 has been a joy and a challenge. Heavier than the Honda CJ250 from the 1970s the handling took some practice to master. Now the country rides I do are comfortable if not white knuckle exciting, and that is the beauty of this bike.
Cruises nicely at100-110kmh, passing at 125kmh with my partner on the back, changing to 4th on steeper hills and third on hills where I need 3rd in a standard motor car.
Initially I was concerned about power, however as the engine runs in and loosens up it goes from strength… Read more · 1to strength. I have added panniers, sissy seat and rack,Windvest shield. I am happy with this nice quality piece of machinery. The only thing I miss is a tacho, but part of the art of riding is learning the feel to pick the right amount of throttle and the right gear. Quality, comfort and price Lack of fuel gauge (250k range at least anyway) and tacho.
Awesome - completely awesomeamazingly good learners bike. well balanced, low enough to give you the confidence of good grip on the road, in turns at any speed. The front and rear wheels are the same size or about, hence the bike is not something to throw about in traffic, and will take a bit of experience before you can make your turns quickly.
Having said that, it is one of the best cruisers out there. It might feel a bit under powered, but for a 400cc bike that weighs in aroung 200kgs it is surprisingly quick off the lights and has enough power for cruisy free way r... Read moreides. Very comfortable seating position, will keep you happy for long rides. The pillion rider may not enjoy it all the same, and it might take a few tweaks of the rear suspension adjustments to get it in the sweet spot. I am a learner rider , hence have only taken short rides with pillions (as it is not legal!) on side streets etc, hence I cant provide much details there. The shaft drive makes looking after this bike a dream. No cleaning or anything, honda engineering at its best. Uphill takes are a breeze, the bike has plenty of power down low. If you are apprehensive about getting a 650cc bike for your learners (like I was, and I regret it now) this is the bike for you!! ps: Love the tail light on this machine, thing of beauty!! Big bike looks, great road presence, ease of ride, smooth gear changes. great design, strong build, shaft drive. Vibrations at times, but mostly associated with wrong gear changes, not entirely the bikes fault. nothing else.
Awesome set of wheels, puts a smile on my face every timeMy almost new Honda Shadow VT400 arrived last week and took it out for a spin straight away. It is an awesome bike, perfect size for me as I am 6.4".
A full size cruiser and LAMS approved as well. Fuel injected, water cooled, shaft drive including factory engine imobilizer. It has all the modern features you would expect but with the classic lines of a thoroughbred cruiser.
It handles great on the freeway and even with a full head wind it still maintains its line with plenty of torque left for overtaking.
I have not pushed it to its limit ye... Read moret but let's jst say that during overtaking a car I easily jumped to 120 km/hr without realising and I reckon it had plenty more to go. Yes it is only a 400 so don't expect miracles from it but all you need to do is drop it in fourth gear give it some gas and it will leave everything behind. It also sounds great but if the legal rumbling of the exhaust is not enough for you the pipes can be replaced with something louder. Lots of accessories available if you want to customize it at very reasonable prices as well. Forgot to add that the factory chrome components look great and have that solid build feel you would expect from Honda. Great handling, good value for money, fuel efficient and I am told very reliable and low maintenance

My vt400 makes a ticking noise sounds electrical from top of engine under the fuel tank only starts ticking at 60kph
Has anybody had the engine check light and HISS light come on at the same time, bike lost power and cut out and restarted. I have just had the injectors cleaned and a new fuel pump fitted two weeks ago.
Hi, I really need vt400 rear seat. But, it's really hard to find it here in my country. Any suggestion any other rear seat from other motorcycle that I can use. Since, I find it is easier to find Harley Davidson, can I use it? Any suggestion type? Many thanks
