Should you buy an X Type Jaguar? – I have been a Jaguar lover and owner since the 70's. The X Type is not quite in the same league as those from the 90's and earlier. But then neither are the newer Jaguar, which have lost their traditional unique class that made Jaguar famous. However the X Type is probably one of the last Jaguar cars to resemble the traditional unique class. I do… Read more

love the Jaguar X Type but I hate the mechanical side of the car. I had a 3ltr V6 awd model which went like a rocket, but it gave me so much trouble that I got rid of it very quickly. I learnt a lot from this 3ltr X Type and as I loved the X Type so much, because of its strong traditional features/styling and its compact size, I decided to buy a 2.1ltr petrol version. Now the 2.1ltr V6 is front wheel drive only, so it doesn't have a transfer box that restricts the removal of the oil sump pan. Nor a rear drive shaft and diff that is positioned under the petrol tank. The 2.1ltr has a different set up with the intake manifolds and thus one can replace the plugs and the coils without removing the intake manifolds, which is necessary on the 2.5 and 3ltr models. So I decided that I could only live with the more practical 2.1ltr X Type, as I do most of the work on my Jaguars myself. It is a shame that most modern cars today including Jaguars are overengineered and are far from practical, because the modern buyer is convinced they want more power than they really need and will ever use. V6 V8 and V12 mania is the down fall of the modern car. This Jaguar X Type would have been a much more practical car with a 2.5ltr 4 cylinder fwd engine and would not have had the bad reputation I't has earned. ,

Love this car!!! – Saw a 2002 X-Type Jag for sale at reputable used car dealer. Had a gander, 92,000km, was in relatively good condition and I loved it. Back in the day, this car went for $70,000. Did some research, had a mechanic inspect it with a report and loved the test drive. Previous owner, an Englishman, looked after the car. My first luxury car with beer… Read more

money.

I alternate this with my 1st car, that I will reluctantly sell - can only drive one car at a time.

Car purchased with warranty so needs a service every 6 months. Oil is cheap, even if it uses premium oil. First service cost me $160 while the Jag dealership wanted $955, but I get a courtesy car. Big deal. With the money I saved, I could hire my own car and still have lots of change. Haha.

Mechanically pretty sound considering its vintage; a few niggles like broken plastic parts (windscreen washers and sunvisor holder, so far) but spare parts readily available either from Jag dealership or ebay. Superglue also great to repair broken plastic parts. Haha.

I use 2 local mechanics: a generalist who is also a car enthusiast and an Euro car specialist. Both reasonably priced compared to Jag dealership.

Fill car up with 98 octane premium petrol, and with town/city driving, a bit heavy on consumption. But then it is an automatic, 2,5L V6 engine with AWD. May not have as much raw power as say a Ford, Holden, Audi or BMW, but it's not a muscle car and it's weighs over 1,550kg. Solid metal panels and not the light tinnie bodywork nowadays.

Aircon, demister, sound all works great! Comfortable ride with its leather seats, but suspension could be softer, but that is AWD system for you. Great road handling.

Can't wait to try it on a long drive on open road at 90km/h to put car through its paces and see its highway fuel consumption.

I love this car!!!

Sublime Tourer – My father bought a 1996 XJS new from Solitaire Motors Adelaide. It was a flat six twin cam with EFI. I drove this car interstate to Melbourne from Adelaide several times. Two weeks before the 3rd time I drove a Ferrari Mondial from Whyallah to Adelaide. Two different realities. The long stroke jag punched with torque over 100 - the Ferrari… Read more

revved with horses. One was smooth - the other abrupt - one quiet the other loud - the Jag soft the Ferrari rough.- one planted - the other skittled. Both cars were quiet - but the Ferrari had the engine noise - that's entertainment.

But I'd take the Jag any day - do 280 and it feels and handles like you're doing state limit. It's user friendly -your grandma can drive it - and and it's economical, smooth, quiet, comfortable and sturdy. Ferrari's are none of that.

Yes Jags aren't what they used to be - (neither are Mercs) - Yes quality can be hit and miss - Yes you lose resale value once you drive it off the lot - Yes parts are expensive - Yes they drink - Yes fittings should be listed as vibrators - Yes differentials may as well be plastic and Yes they're expensive

Unfortunately Land Rover's turned the iconic Jags into Mercs.

Check things out thoroughly – Very pleased after buying second hand five year's ago, when 70K. Now 116K travelled. First two years of ownership cost of repairs and servicing around $6K, owing, I feel to, neglect from earlier ownership. Subsequent two years, no problems Don't buy until you know how how much you need to spend to make an excellent car.  Show details ·  3

Buyers remorse – I purchased this car as a pre-owned model. It was approximately 5-6 years old at the time. The aesthetics of the car is awesome. However, over the years ,I have found that although it is "technically" a jaguar, it is a cheaper model which has needed repair after repair. I rebuilt the transmission a few months ago. Also antifreeze was getting low… Read more

and I was not seeing any puddle under the car, so I took it to a mechanic, after the transmission rebuild. The whole part with the hoses had to be replaced(seal was leaking). so I had to get this replaced. Now the engine light is on, so back to the shop. The engine is leaking oil, the drive belt needs to be replaced and on top of that I need to do normal maintenance (brakes, rotors, tires). This car is a nightmare. I know that it isn't new, but I take care of it, and only have 78,880 miles on it. I need a car and a new car right now is sort of out of the question. Over the years it seems like this car has required more than its fair share of repairs. If I could do it again, I would never have purchased this money trap. I believe this car was manufactured by Ford, so why are the parts so impossibly expensive? I can't wait to push this model off a cliff

Worst Car Ever – I spent almost $2000 changing the alternator few months ago. I spent $1300 changing the fuel tank, as it was leaking. Today there is coolant tank leaking. This mechanic told me the part will cost ~$200-300 + Labour. A Piece of junk. I will buy Japanese car next time. Never buy European car again.  Show details

Bad – the car is not worth the money i paid for it. it is not a jaguar, i am disapointed and wished i had not brought it. it is only good for a shopping trolley, it is not a cruising car, it vibrates in the steering at 100 klm/hr and the diff wines. it rides ok and it is quite comfortable. i looked at jaguars web site and service bulitins on x types,… Read more

and all the problems i have had are in the buletins. the service from jaguar was disapointing as they would rather fobb you off. i purchased my car new in dec 02 and i know there have been some modifications but could'nt get satisfaction from jaguar. i would not recomend them to any one. sorry. i purchased a new 3 ltr because i liked the look of the car and the size of the vehicle that my wife could handle. i also wanted the power of the larger engine. i have been around jaguar cars for 42 years and i own an e type. i dislike the poor quality of the fittings, such as poor quality plastic components that break, fall off continually and had to be glued with loctite super glue in the end. since i brought the car, i have complained about vibrations in steering and it is still there. i have had 3 rear diferentuals and there is still a wine in it. there are many other things i have had fixed under warranty, to nuwmerous to mention. the car has only done 61,000 klm
