Kinokuniya

I asked if they would open preorders for a limited edition boxset (Scum Villain's Self-Saving System, go read it) and they emailed twice to say yes, soon, and then another email to notify me on the day it actually appeared on their site. They answered all of my emails within 24 hours with accurate information and dates. The boxset was published in… Read more
America but it arrived at Kino after a mere week. It took only two days for them to sort through inventory and ready it for dispatch, and a day and a bit for AusPost to deliver it interstate. Efficient!
The packaging was very good: a sturdy box, and my bubble-wrapped boxset nestled in packing paper. There was another layer of bubble wrap on the top + a piece of cardboard. Not a scratch or dent on my precious.
Their prices are higher than competition. When I factored in shipping though, it turned out about the same. Kino has free shipping for orders over $50, so I recommend bulk-buying to take advantage of it. If you regularly buy books, their membership gives a discount and they have sales for members on top of that as well.
After trying Amazon (terrible) and Booktopia (better, but still has issues), I thought I'd give Kinokuniya a try for Manga. I'm quite picky with how things are packed and the condition of items. I was pleasantly surprised with the detail and response time of their emails, the shipping time, and how well everything was packed. I had placed an… Read more
order and emailed them asking how well they are packed as I'm a collector. They promptly responded with photos of my order showing how it was packed. The order was 4 thick omnibus style manga books. They were bubble wrapped in pairs, placed in an outer bubble wrapping and then more packing paper on the sides. I've attached the photos they sent me (and yes it is exactly how it arrived). The outer box was nice and sturdy as well. If you decide to order, include in the order notes asking them to package carefully with bubble wrap etc.
Unfortunately one of the 4 books did arrive with a small(ish) crease on the front cover towards the bottom (and like I said I am quite picky, some may not care or even notice), however, after emailing them with a photo they responded promptly with photos of a replacement for me to confirm I am happy with it, and then express posted it that same day with a return label included. Excellent service.
Their website could do with a little work as the search and navigation is a bit dated, and anything out of stock that can be ordered in says the same thing (6-8 weeks wait) even if it's less in reality. In these cases I've just emailed them to confirm before placing an order and as always they respond very quickly.
TLDR: If you want:
- Cheap, fast, and HIGH chance of damaged books - Amazon
- Somewhere in the middle - Booktopia
- Fast and detailed customer support, VERY good packaging of orders, great selection (but sometimes a *little* more expensive) - Kinokuniya
Inappropriate bag checking and closure before time – Difficult to find a salesperson in the George Street to assist. Often when I do, they make me look like they’ve done me a favour! I dislike and refuse to show my bag. Most people don’t steal and you cannot treat them as potential [Content Removed]. If you have reason to suspect, call the police and show the video footage. ([Content Removed]) who requests bag checks refused my entry at 6.55pm yesterday because he said the shop was closed. Closing time was 7pm. You should keep your doors open until 7pm and service all your customers who remain inside and call them to the checkout. Pay your staff whatever additional time you need. Never close before your advertised closure time. Someone may come from a long way and know exactly what they want and be out of your shop in 2-3 minutes. Don’t assume and don’t be rude Mr Security Guard. Abide by Australian rules and expectations. You’re in Australia.
Decent but not the best online bookstore – I was looking for the textbook for my self-study, and I usually prefer to shop at the reliable retailer. Hence, I purchased two books from this retailer. It took 5 days to be delivered but I think that is acceptable length of time. I didn't use it this time but if you paid the yearly membership, you can purchase the book at more cheaper price. like the fact that it has free shipping fee when your order is over $50. Moreover, they are selling wide range of Japanese book so it is good option if you love manga and stuffs.
However, the books delivered to my house is not in good condition and is slightly damaged. Additionally, there are way more cheaper option like Booktopia, Amazon, etc. Therefore, if there are other options available then I would recommend purchasing from that site instead.
Poor form – I had thought Kinokuniya pretty good until they outed themselves to be pretty ordinary. Yesterday as I exited their door a young man asked to look into my backpack. He was standing on public space so I checked that he was employed by Kinokuniya. He was. I had a Kinokuniya card and had often shopped with them. By their procedure they implied I… Read more
might have stolen a book or books from them. The implication is perhaps actionable if you want more than just to decide the enterprise is not as good as you thought. James Gordon Sydney
Disappointing online experience – I live in Melb so I have attempted to order online. I have ordered three separate times and all my orders have been cancelled every single time. They put the manga as in stock when in the end they cancel and update their online page that is actually unavailable. It is frustrating getting my hopes up every time.
A beautiful book store – Large range of books all under the same roof. Interesting book signing, art activities and exhibition. Friendly staff assistance. Convenient location in the heart of city, a very pleasant shopping spot to spend a quiet afternoon.
Great range – This place is seriously the best. They have a fantastic selection of stationary although on the pricey side. Staff have been helpful in my experiences, pointing me to the Japanese magazine section when I was wrongly browsing a Chinese section. I love to buy cards for friends here as they are unique and they have novel gift ideas. Huge book range!! You could actually spend hours in here... Great product range Too expensive
A terrible experience! – Overpriced, especially stationary. Rude staff members, uninterested in showing you where books are to be found in the store, don't appear to know how to interact with customers. I was outright lied to instore about whether or not ordering online had free postage - unaware casual said they did, website says no! large selecion, some imports don't… Read more
know how long it will take to order in if they don't have it, expensive, extremely poor returns policy compared to other stores, completely unacceptable customer service
