$5 was a temptation I could not resist – I had withstood the pie maker craze, but when I saw the Anko sausage maker for $5 (must have been a run out special), I couldn’t resist. It was easier to use than a pie maker - just cut a readymade puff pastry sheet in half (no fiddly cutting out of pastry rounds like for a pie maker), lay half the pastry on the cooking surface, fill with… Read more · 1
whatever, top with the remaining pastry half and cook. Crispy, hot sweet or savoury rolls emerge in a matter of minutes - 12 to 15 mins, starting from cold without preheating. What’s not to like? (Well, other than the ease of putting on more weight with easy snacks.)
The is a very, very basic appliance without an off / on switch. Controls are via the plug at the mains, but hey it’s $5! The appliance gets very, very hot and I found it easier to assemble whatever I desired on the cold machine, clamp it closed, then plug it on at the mains. Once the food stops steaming, it’s done. Unclamp carefully, remove the rolls - it makes 4 at a time, which is ideal for our small family of 3 - and tuck in.
It took me a few tries to work out the amount of filling to use. I found that it can hold a decent amount but sauces do tend to cook/leak out. Best to place the appliance on a baking sheet for easy clean-up, and to wipe up spills on the cooking plates while they are still warm. The non-stick cooking plates are pretty decent and release buttery puff pastry easily and cleanly.
The appliance clamps to close, and can be stood vertically to store which is handy.
A well spent $5!
Easy & crispy – This appliance has decent grooves to fit an ample amount of filling. Quick to cook with no reheating required. So many recipes to be found online. It makes 4 at a time, so if you wanted to make a family meal it would take a bit of time between batches, as machine must cool. Messy to clean, especially oil tray at back is hard to get into. But otherwise, I purchased for $15, so great value. Show details · 1
What a pleasant surprise – I saw a clip on fb, where a lady made some custard rolls using the Anko Sausage Roll Maker. Well, thought I’d give it a go as my children enjoy eating Apple Pies from retailer stores. This was such a surprising kitchen appliance, and yes very inexpensive. Simple to use, no fuss having to prepare for snacks becoming stuck. What I did was make a… Read more
small portion of stewed apples, allowed to cook. Made some homemade custard and viola- done. Basically used puff pastry sheets, made a variation of apple/ apple-custard/custard-fresh blueberries. Creations up to your discretion. Took approx. 5-10 min, varying on your contents. Once cooked, remove allow to cook, as yes contents are extremely hot. Might be a pointless statement but many by step and simply avoid danger alert to hot contents. Also do not overfill, no need to. Trial and error but you will find a happy medium.
My only negative, the unit itself within the heating plates at handle will have food caught within. Use a wooden skewer to clean between the gaps. Suppose this may be the difference between pricing. Other than that, for $20 couldn’t be happier.
