Started out well but quality not there – So I bought an Olympus in 2019, seam sealed it and tested it out, and was very happy. Fast forward four years and maybe a dozen happy trips to last weekend where I was camping in moderate wind and light rain and suddenly the tent started to leak. The offending seam was the central seam over the middle pole. Now I could have not sealed it properly… Read more

but on close inspection the grommet that holds the inner tent is wicking water from the seam. To me this seems silly, after all the instructions are to only seam seal the inside of the seam, yet the grommets are sewn into the seams and as such will always provide a wick. Not happy. So now I will seal the outside of the seams as well, against manufacturers recommendations. Also I noticed that one of the taped internal floor seams has pulled apart, do this got a stick on patch with seam sealant on perimeter. My old mountain hardware tent never leaked despite the fabric treatment flaking off and the seam tape peeling away after 20 years of abuse. So 12 odd trips in mild conditions are hardly a test for a tent of this price, you can keep it as far as I'm concerned. I’ll be paying the extra for a hilleberg.

Subsequent to this review the floor failed completely. Avoid macpac tents as their quality has really gone downhill

Very disappointed – After keeping tent and fly in a man aerated bag fly and tent became sticky and came off on my hands Had limited use MacPac said out of warranty and offered me to buy a new fly at almost $500 Was incredibly disappointed after paying more than 1k for this tent Won’t be buying any of their kit again after a lifetime of loyalty to the brand Show details

Macpac not what it used to be – macpac ownership and also quality has changed /reduced over time and this applies to their tents. Starting from being made in a nz garage the business has had to go overseas to remain competitive. It’s run on a similar model to krapmandhu. Once renown for a solid tub floor for nz damp they’ve skimped for lighter weight. Sil nylon came out around… Read more

2000. The newer stuff from about 2005 isn’t what it used to be. I used to work in retail selling it and owned a Celeste, microlight, minaret, bibulmen bag and Olympus. Most are from the 2000 era and going strong. Had To replace the minaret after it tore to shreds in a wind gust. The stitching created perforated tear line. Not what you want alpine.

Disaster trying to seam seal this tent ourselves – This is a well designed tent, roomy inside for 2 people and I like that is has openings at both ends and 2 vestibules. However, having to seam seal the tent upon purchase was messy and difficult. No one in the Macpac stores knew how to seam seal and just directed me to the very limited instructions provided with the tent. It was messy and we only… Read more

managed to seam seal half the tent seams before having to go back to Macpac to buy more. The second tube came with a brush, advised use of gloves (learnt that the hard way) and gave detailed instructions. Why all of this didn't come with the initial seam sealant is a mystery to me. Unfortunately even with a second tube we weren't able to fully coat all seams so will be going back again for a third tube. Annoying and time consuming!! If could make my decision again, I would buy a tent from Mont which comes fully seam sealed to begin with. I can't yet comment on how waterproof the tent is because we haven't tested it out in the rain....... fingers crossed.

Leaks like a baby – I was the happy owner of a Macpac Olympus tent for 20 years. After losing it I decided to buy another. Unfortunately the Macpac company was sold on, and the new owners have reloacted construction of their tents to Vietnam, and are using a much lower quality tent floor. The old Macpac was fantasticly waterproof. I remember pitching on a field in a… Read more

storm which the following day was a lake 4 inches deep the tent was powder dry. Very sadly those days are over, the new Macpac Olympus is hopelessly not waterproof. Even light rain and the inside of the tent fills up like a bath. It is absolutely useless, and should not be used in rain at all. I view this as serious. A tent should be a santuary from poor weather. This tent is a serious hypothermia risk. Shame on Macpac for making such rubbish. On my returnh to the shop a customer came in with a new Macpac raincoat made from event fabric. She was a mountain guide. She said her raincoat was not at all waterproof. Macpac quickly refunded her purchase price.

Macpac is building on it's name for excellent products 15 years ago. They now make cheap rubbish that simply doesn't work. Gone very much like Katmandu with huge discounting. Such a shame. cheap cost $899 discounted to $630, then $250 worth of vouchers bring the price to $380 Not at all waterproof

What was your course of action from here? Did Macpac replace the tent, or offer you a refund?

The only tent for me – Use this tent for wild camping in Scottish highlands and Lake District and has had everything thrown at it from vertical rain to gale force winds to winter camping in the snow and never worry about it collapsing or coming apart. Single person able to pitch this in dark, windy and rainy conditions while other gets a brew going. Good sized gear… Read more ·  3

pockets inside which are appreciated when de-gearing. Had mine for years and still going strong and have not even thought about replacing it Simple design. Very well. made easy to pitch in poor conditions. huge gear pockets. smallish vestibles, single guys which block both enterances are a nuisance

Excellent – This is an amazing tent. It has got me through some very tough conditions. If you need a tent that you can rely on when the weather turns feral, this is it. Tough: top of the the line: Reliable: No matter what the conditions, this will keep you dry and safe. None, maybe I would like it lighter or be able to be packed smaller, I just gotta get fitter.
