BT-50 The best 4WD Ute I have ever owned – I own a manual dual cab dropside 2022 BT-50. This vehicle is used on a regular basis (at least once a week) to carry loads of 1400kg. with the sides easily removed if required. The 4WD capability is as good as any other 4WD drive in this class. Recommend a good all round tyre that can handle general off-road as well as highway driving. The fuel economy is excellent and does vary depending on load being carried / towed. Recommend the long range fuel tank if living g remote or rural. It's better to be looking at the fuel than looking for it!! Downside of the fuel gauge is that it only reads from 70 litres down. The first half of your long range tank the gauge will read as full, so recommend that you also resettable trip meter when refuelled. Recommend that you also jump on the BT-50 Owners facebook page and purchase yourself a second spare tyre for those longer remote trips. I regularly use this vehicle for regular family camping trips where distances of 2000km are the norm. All in all I highly recommend the current BT-50 as a family dual cab utility that will exceed your expectations.
Breaking system – The car at this point has proven to be everything promised but I wasn’t told about the braking assist. Very bad idea, dangerous to other drivers. The car makes you keep your distance. That allows others to fill gap the the car applies the brakes forcing everyone behind you to break and the gap in front of you doesn’t justify the brake being used. Fuel economy is shocking – I put an empty 8x5 trailer on and I instantly lose 3.4 klm per litre or 12.5 lts per hundred klms which then brings my range down to just over 500 klm per tank , trailer weighs 250 kg . box trailer even the van is a big drop as the Isuzu motor was rated best economy for towing . Have had it in an out of dealer ship an case raised with Mazda but they reckon within specs which is a load of rubbish as sane model Isuzu getting much better economy . Not sure if true but been told mazda took on motor but no the there fuel management system . Only done 7000 klms an thinking of trading in on a Isuzu as getting no support from Mazda or there dealer ship on Fraser coast qld . Very disappointed
Nice ute but a few issues – Purchased March 2021 and now done almost 25,000km. This is a farm ute. No major issues except the mice like the wiper blades and, like other people say, the "take key" bell is really, really annoying when you are jumping in and out of the vehicle all day on the farm. soft for a farm ute. I don't know how long the plastic rear bumper will last the rigors of paddock work and sticks etc. And the front plastic bumper scratched easily until I got a bull bar. So far I don't put it through the same paces in the paddock that I did with my previous ute - 2003 Hilux.
Regrettable purchase – The factory suspension is a disgrace. Only suitable for very light duties on good roads. No way can this ute safely carry its rated payload with the factory springs. open. Lane assist is just dangerous. I have taped over both cameras on the outside of the windscreen. Autonomous braking should be illegal - it puts the brakes on when I drive under a low branch. And which genius invented the rear proximity warning? Obviously someone who never towed a trailer. Reversing a trailer is accompanied by a loud scream warning me that I am going to run into it! The cabin is claustrophobic and the driving experience is mundane. The dust sealing is inadequate. I really regret my decision to buy this ute.
Frustrating piece of junk – Unfortunately I purchased a new bt50 thinking it would be as good as my old one. This new one is the biggest pice of junk I’ve owned. too long around town, but at higher speeds it’s always changing between 5th & 6th. Luckily mine has the update that lets me turn of lane keep assist with one button, but unfortunately there’s no easy way to turn off the autonomous braking which seems apply itself randomly when you pass vehicles using a turning lane.
Do not buy a BT50 – 21 BT50 19000 kms used for camping, off road and commuting. At about 7000kms it went into limp mode and was picked up on tilt tray and taken to Darwin Mazda, although I had used mazda roadside assist Darwin mazda new nothing about why the car came in so it sat there for 4-5 hours until I enquired about the progress on fixing the problem. just caused a delay and extended the time I was without a vehicle. I was told it required a software update (really, on a new car??). At about 18000kms while driving on a dirt road up in the Gulf country we somehow broke the rear diff lock actuator off. This was not warranty as it was impact damage. The Nathan River road is not that bad really so I was a bit surprised this happened. The car went in for a new actuator to be fitted and this is where things got really bad. The new diff lock actuator didn't work and I was told a ring in the diff was damaged, this turned out to be the whole diff centre. The part was ordered and the replacement part arrived but was damaged. Then I was told there were no more in the country and another part was coming from overseas, no eta. I asked if the old diff centre could be put back inbut they could not guarantee that further damage wouldn't occur and at my cost for 3 hours labour. I declined the offer thinking it wont be long before the new part arrives. About 4 - 5 weeks later I was told another part was on the way by road, but it was lost in transit. The dealer has had my car for 7 weeks by now. A new part was ordered and put on air freight but it was delayed and lost and eventually found and put in 9 weeks after my initial booking. At no time in the 9 weeks did there seem to be any urgency to get my car back on the road. So 9 weeks and $5000 later at my cost they got my car finished. No one would take responsibility and everyone just blamed someone else. I was surprise they had to actually replaced the diff centre and not just a part in the diff as I was initially told. How the diff was damaged and why the actual diff was replaced I do not know. My dissatisfaction is mainly with the dealer but the fact the car broke so easily is also disappointing. I have since purchased and installed a diff lock actuator guard and I recommend everyone to do the same (Mazda do not).
Buyer beware. Terrible "safety" features, paint scratches like nothing else, clutch noises – Had a 2020 new model/shape BT50 for 13mths. Pros: -punchy -quiet on the road (if you can put up with beeping and warning systems!) -towed well Cons: -Mazda Australia only provide lip service about the woeful "safety" features.... things which are irrelevant on the road and then jam on brakes and swerve for no reason. Hated this stuff. Constantly beeping at something. Very difficult and frustrating to turn off without a simple button like other cars. -paint scratches exceptionally easily and panels dent with minimal pressure. -high beams are really not great -ugly old style park lights -after market mods really expensive
Don't buy this car if you drive on country roads! – The Lane Departure Prevention system makes driving this car on country roads down-right dangerous. curves, -old lane markings, -avoiding a stationary vehicle, -crack or repair mark on the road, etc." Unlike other brands we own, the LDP system cannot be turned off, except by going through a series of settings EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU TURN ON THE KEY! Mazda say they are working on a fix, but it has obviously been a long time coming. How hard is it to make it default to off instead of on?
Shitbox – Done 7000 kms on my brand new bt-50 before driving it on sand for 2 hours, somehow the front dif has blown a hole in itself and 4x4 wouldn’t work. Mazda says they’ll pay for everything yet I’m stuck in the middle of no where for weeks without a courtesy car or accommodation. good on fuel. Around town I regularly achieve 9 litres per 100. On the open road I have had it as Low as 8 litres per 100. I also tow a van, 14 ft pop top. Sitting on 100 kph between 11.2 and 12 litres per 100. Depending on terrain and head winds. I had the upgrade ally tray fitted with the centre draw and the under tray water container on passenger side and under tray tool box on drivers side. Had the Mazda’s loop bull bar fitted. I have no extra lights for night driving as I feel the factory led light are more than adequate. The Ute is extremely comfortable for long drives. I have a manual and the first great is lower than I have had in other cars. Some people don’t like it but I love the low first gear for towing especially, don’t have to ride the clutch for take off with heavy loads. Would I buy another mazduzu if mine was written of? Yes I would in a heartbeat. Update. I have since sold the vehicle back to Mazda as I was given. Company Ute. I sold the Ute with 67000 ks up in 2 years. Not once did I see the dpf light come on. Every fuel fill up I added fuel doctor to the tank.
