Tougher than you would think! – This is my third McCulloch chainsaw. I was gifted two 14" models made by Electrolux - they should have stuck to vacuum cleaners. I bought the current CS420T which is a Husqvarna built unit. As different as chalk and cheese. The saw is getting on for 5 years old and has literally cut tonnes of wood and paid for itself over and over. The only… Read more

improvement you can make is to fit a Tungsten Carbide chain which I wish I had done from new. Just let an expert sharpen it.

Only thing that is a little annoying is the bar and Chain tensioning system - bears checking every time you refuel.

An absolute standout for the money.

Never let me down – I own 2 x Mcculloch chainsaws, a cs420t and a cs400t and both have been put to a great deal of work with no issues. I've had to give them a sharpen when needed from time to time but apart from that have given them very little maintenance and they haven't shown any signs of mechanical wear. I bought the cs420t roughly 2 years ago because I needed a chainsaw with just a little extra grunt and it exceeded my expectations... Can't fault it.  Show details

Fantastic chainsaw! Absolute quality at a very low price – A friend who is an arborist recommended McCulloch chainsaws to me, he actually swears by them. I have always bought Husqvarna in the past and was totally unaware that McCulloch saws are made by Husqvarna but sold at a fraction of the cost. Why spend big dollars when you can get the same quality for under half the cost??? I bought the McCulloch CS… Read more

420T for $320 and the same size saw with a Husqvarna badge on it would cost between $800 - $900. I haven't had the saw for long but given it plenty of use and so far I'm very impressed.

Good domestic saw – I've had this saw for about 3 years and it has performed well with minimal issues. 15 minutes of maintenance occasionally has kept it starting and running well. It does have poor fuel pickup as mentioned in another review which means once the saw is half full on fuel it cannot be used while being held at certain angles, this is a minor annoyance.… Read more

I use this saw for light domestic use and camping trips every 6 months. A properly sharpened chain is key.

poor quality and design – Facts, Small fuel, forever stopping to fuel up, bad system for fuel pickup when it is half full, so you get even less time on the saw. The dog teeth on the font always rattle loose - dont over tighten as they are held on by two course thread screw that chew out the miserable plastic housing that they anchor to. Also the chain break is well over… Read more

the front so that when you going through a large log and you have passed the height of the saw you can no long have your hand on the top handle as there is no room.

The exhaust is conveniently located so that when you have to handle the quick release you often put your fingers on a hot surface. The exhaust is also somewhat proud so that when working the log yo end up levering the saw off the front of the exhaust plate.

Excellent Domestic Saw – Excellent for what it is. Purchased mine about 2 years ago. Last spring had two 30 metre gum trees felled and used the CS420 for cutting firewood on the larger diameter logs / tree trunks and a Stihls MS170 for the smaller trunks and branches. Cut through with ease, felt motor was slightly underpowered but still did what I wanted. I have found… Read more ·  2

the motor gets hot after the second fuel top up, and difficult to restart when hot, but once cooled down, ok to run again, after about 2 hours of cool down. Lucky having second chainsaw in hand, and able to keep going with clearing.

I actually use a 30:1 fuel mix, as I'm making this saw really work hard, and at full throttle, I'm afraid of seizing the motor. The marginal extra oil doesn't make any noticeable smoke, and gives that little extra lubrication.

First year of ownership I neglected the unit and persisted trying to cut logs with blunt chains. This is a big no,no. To save a lot of grief, when buying this chainsaw, buy an electric chainsaw sharpener, and after a full days use, or every 8 hours, clean the air filter. You'll have trouble free usage.

Had the 18" bar, chain and sprocket replaced from wear and tear, reason being as mentioned above, for $130.00, very reasonable.

So for domestic use, and keep it well maintained, this chainsaw is well worth it's money. I highly recommend it.

Reason I give it five stars, even though having some issues, is for the money I paid for it, and the misuse and neglect I've given it, it's paid for itself many times over.

Very satisfactory – Went and bought after my Stihl bust its chain one weekend and I couldnt get a replacement. Easy to assemble and good instructions. Quality Oregon chain. Had a few starting problems till I followed the instructions exactly then all good. Powerful motor and made short work of a fig cutting branches up to 20cm. Doesnt have the quality feel of a Stihl… Read more

but seems good design. Used Stihl oil at brand recommended ratio of 1:40. Power. Ease of use. Inexpensive. No window for checking bar oil level. Choke lever flimsy.

Good value chainsaw – Putting aside brand snobbery, this is a chainsaw that would have been a premium product just a few years ago. The quality manufacturer (Husqvarna) can be trusted regarding safety. The feature set is well suited to the home or occasional user. But note: All chainsaws require maintenance and if you attend to it, you can get huge value out of a… Read more ·  1

bargain like this model. And that is how I get by - I can't afford expensive brands but I choose quality cheapies and look after them.

My favorite features are:

- the 18" bar which allowed me to remove a very thick palm that was beyond my smaller saw

- the no-tool chain tensioner although you must watch your chain tension constantly

- the automatic chain oiler

My least favourite features are:

- recessed security screws between me and the air filter

- the chain that comes with the saw which seemed quick to corrode (Tip: Soak your chain in WD40 after use)

The features that are simply acceptable:

- the engine has sufficient power

- the unit is not light but it's not a climbers saw

- starts ok

I would give this item 4.75 stars if I could, and I would buy the same again. Price, bar length, chain tensioner Cheap chain, access to air filter

Great Saw plenty of power – Purchased from Bunnings 2 weeks ago, was attracted by the fact that it was made in USA. Also Husqvarna make Mcculloch these days, and Husqvarna are the best chainsaws worldwide. Got home, opened box and assembled, which I can say, was a breeze, an automatic tensioning chain system is a feature, and it took no more than 5 mins to assemble. … Read more

Firing up the unit sounded crisp and powerful, cut down some decent size trees in our back paddock and this saw went through them like butter.

I can honestly say my old Stihl had nothing on this baby.

It also has a soft start

Guys at store told me 2 year service warranty at Husqvarna dealer!

Can't go wrong there!

Highly recommend! Well priced, value for money, powerful Carry case would be nice
