I have a 1999 mercury 150 EFI it’s darts and I was good but when you put it in gear to takeoff it only goes up to 3200 RPMs and smokes real bad. You can put it in neutral rib it up until 6500 RPMs, it will fluctuate and then once it stops fluctuating will run as normal. Any idea what’s going on?

What year did mercury go to EFI on the 150 hp motor?

what is a good cylinder compression on a1996 150 efi 2 stroke outboard motor?

Hi Rodolfo I can't recall the exact numbers on the EFI 150 but i currently own a Optimax 175 direct injected two-stroke with 190hrs and it has 130psi across all cylinders. Its professional maintained by a licensed outboard mechanic.

Hope this helps.

I have this motor , love it! Ready to sell it with an 18' Ducksworth Advantage. People keep asking me the hours. How do I find the hours? Rebecca, Kuna, Id.

Hi Beccie, well if you don’t have an hour meter fitted near the instrument area then you can’t really know, i have heard of dealers being able to check hours when plugged up to their computer at the workshop but I’m not sure if that’s true.

A genuine buyer who is interested may do a compression test on the cylinders to check the engines health.

Best of luck with the sale!

Thats correct Lui, workshop computer diagnosis will recall the hours logged on the outboards ECU.

Rossco ...I have a Merc 2 stroke when out at sea i am traveling at 3000 rpm it will drop down to 2000 rpm then after a while it will back to 3000 rpm on it own can some one help me THANK YOU

Lui

Hi Rossco, I’m guessing that your engine would be an older model? Do you know what year it is? Sounds like that issue is something fuel supply related... blocked fuel filter, squashed fuel line, hole in fuel line getting air? Is your carby or efi ?

Regards, Lui

They are strong motors, 18 yr old now though, I’d definitely recommend you check the compression on all 6 cyls & make sure it’s still all right...also open oil drain plug on the gearbox at the bottom with large flat screwdriver & make sure it’s not creamy, also if you buy it change the water impeller & you’ll be good to go!

All the best mate!

As above, really good outboards with a good history behind them

Hi Wayne agree with comments above BUT also have the thermostats checked or replaced on your next service. Its not a direct problem for the Merc 150hp but it will show you if its been flushed out on a regular basis, they should be clean and free of salt build up or corrosion. Change the water impeller during normal service intervals too. 290hrs is barely run in, cheers.

Are these engines reliable I don't really care if they are thirsty I just don't want it to break down?

probably the most reliable outboard you could buy, the motors are very well engineered and have a amazing ski racing background

The big Merc 2 strokes were always the first choice for racers
