I know it's a 17 year old vehicle but the paint peeling and rust is ridiculous, I've seen cars from the 90's with paint that holds up better and I'm going to be down $2k just to repaint the roof. Please avoid white Tritons, they weren't painted to Australian standards. I've seen plenty of white Tritons with the same problem as me, ML, MN, MQ, MR it doesn't matter. it's a manufacturer defect and Mitsubishi should be accountable. Show details

awesome car – I've had my triton for some time now, never had any significant problems, the rear wind down window is a major reason i bought this car, when you're on the highway and have your window down and the rear window the breeze is amazing. i have the Diesel version on the highway i get 6.0-6.5 liters per 100 km. Off road: before this car i had a suzuki… Read more

sierra, now that is a beast off road but the triton isn't too bad, she will get you from A to B, isn't too bad on the beach as long as you don't drive like a fool is the soft sand..

would i recommend this car to my friends? all the time, the 2007 model has a chain for the timing belt... works amazingly lasts a very long time compared to traditional rubber... this car is the AK-47 of cars

Love my Triton – I bought my 07 ML Triton with 130,000 on the clock around 6 years ago. It has now done over 300,000 ks and all I have had to is centre bearing front shockers and brakes. It has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. I drive it mostly every day, it still feels the same as the day I bought it, work horse and fun. Love my Triton. Show details

Most reliable Ute – Have had my 2008 3.2lt for 8 years now. Never had a problem with it. Tows my horse float super even up the huge hills I've used a lot. Couldn't be happier with my purchase. Would recommend this triton. Show details

Great car would never be without my ute – Bought My 3.5Lt Petrol Triton in 2007 new from the manufacturer (worked for them from 1971-2008) and never has any major problems apart from the paint, had to get the bonnet and wheel arch flares repainted, done just over 100,0000 and will be going in for a new timing chain. I have the car service on time and the car has never let me down Had to… Read more

So reliable, would buy it 10 out of 10 times – Very fuel economical and the distance we could get was amazing. Turning circle was a little bigger than I liked but I think the 265's didn't help. The handling though was more than excellent and very responsive. Interior is all vinyl apart from the roof which they will discontinue from 2015 onwards which to me makes no sense when buying a 4wd. Mud dirt water etc. and the room is great for passengers and packing the extras for camping  Show details

Poor fuel economy – I had an ML for nine years and never had a single problem. So was quite excited to be getting a new MQ Exceed. I kitted it out with the same AT tyre, hard lid and wispa roof bars. When I drove it out of the showroom the dealer said "now don't expect the fuel economy to be right straight away" which sent alarm bells ringing. 6000kms later and I'm… Read more

getting 11.5l/100kms which is very disappointing considering my old "less fuel efficient" ML would return under 10l/100kms unless towing.

I've had the injectors recalibrated but haven't noticed any difference.

Would love to hear from someone who has had this same problem resolved

Also has a rattling passenger seat and on the second lid lock.

Warranty – I have just had to get my front crank seal replaced on my 09 ML triton thinking it would be covered by mitsubishi's 10 year power train warranty as its part of the power train, only to find out its not covered and not classed as part of the power train and class it as part f the sump and the sump is not part of the motor!!. So now they want to… Read more

Nowhere in the warranty book does it mention anything about the simp not being part of the motor, bit dosn't s motor need a dump to rundown therefore part of the power train. In my opinion the 10 year power train warranty isn't worth the paper it's written on. I took this up with their head office only to come to the same conclusion!!

I'd never buy another triton – I have had my triton now for 3 years and in that time it has had the manifold removed for cleaning 6 times. The carbon build up in the inlet manifold always blocks up causing the ute to lose power and surge really badly. They are the only type of ute to do it from what I can find out because of the set up. This problem with them has been around for a number of years and even the 2016 models will do the same.

Mitsubishi should be ashamed of themselves for selling such a shonky product and recall all tritons and get this issue fixed.

Buy something else folks because tritons are crap.

An 08 model and her mileage is still low.

awsome beast. 7yrs on and still perfect – I like the Triton as it ticked all the boxes when I went looking for a truck from all the different manufacturers that would suit our lifestyle. rattles, problems of any kind. I used it for work everyday and fun on weekends. My second Triton now and as before expect the same flawless reliability i got before. However if something did go wrong I have my 5/10yr warranty to fall back on. So if backseat comfort and room is what you would like in your truck with a class leading turning circle, climate control air con, leather seats etc (top of the line GLS) for less than some of the other manufacturers basic to mid range models with less warranty, then this 4x4 is for you! Rear seat room was my main deciding feature. Got diesel for towing ski boat. Leather seats, dvd screen for the kids, waterproof factory seat covers for those bush bashing trips, tray liner, towbar, good fuel economy, best of all the rear window winds down. Plenty of other things I won't get into Only one thing and that is during rain the water gets blown into the cab if the rear window is down

Preston Motors -Mitsubishi Australia – I purchased a new Mitsubishi Triton from Preston Motors in 2007. This was our third Triton; second one from Preston Motors and our first diesel. One of the reasons for 'upgrading' was Mitsubishi's 10 year drive train warranty. A month ago the car started to loose power and blow a bit of smoke so I took it to my mechanic who thought the problem may… Read more

be dirty fuel injectors. He removed the injectors and sent them off to be cleaned and calibrated and upon removing them discovered that the throttle body was almost entirely blocked with soot and carbon from a "poorly designed EGR system". The throttle body was consequentially given a good clean out and it turned out the injectors needed to be replaced. Once the fuel system was re-assembled and the car was re-started it became obvious that the problem was more serious than initially thought as the smoke was still present and there was a distinct clunking sound from the engine. At this point the mechanic suggested that as the car was well within the warranty period for both kilometres travelled and time I should take it to Preston Motors for diagnosis. WISHFUL THINKING!

Throughout the last four weeks the service department at Preston Motors has been extraordinarily tardy, whilst throwing in as many red herrings as humanly possibly in an obvious attempt to test my resolve. It took a week to get a compression test which confirmed no compression in cylinder two which the Service Manager gleefully announced would cost me "many thousands of dollars to repair". When I explained the warranty status, and that that the car had been serviced religiously which was documented in the service book and in the glovebox for perusal, I was told that a log book would not be sufficient to ratify a regular service schedule, that Preston Motors would need to sight invoices for all services for the life of the car. In addition to this receipts would have to show oil viscosity, valve adjustments, filter changes and part numbers. Red herring after red herring! I forwarded copies of all invoices to Preston Motors which ratified the service history they already had in the log book and was then advised that my case had been referred to the area manager for Mitsubishi, who "has expressed that we are to follow standard industry practice, and thus (sic) is indeed a retail repair". APPARENTLY STANDARD INDUSTRY PRACTICE FOR MITSUBISHI IS TO REPUDIATE A WARRANTY CLAIM! At this time Preston Motors requested permission to remove the the cylinder head (at my cost) to ascertain the damage. When I queried what this would achieve the service manager advised that the type of damage could prove that whether the warranty would be upheld. "Damage to piston/s or bore/s should be a warranty repair whilst valve damage would suggest inadequate adjustment and would preclude a warranty claim. It then took two weeks to remove the head and report back to me! I guessed the delay was due to not finding their preferred option and I was correct. The diagnosis was "Whole in piston located cylinder 2 (sic)" and the occlusion that "This has been deemed a retail repair".

I now don't know what to do, other than warn others to be aware that Mitsubishi and Preston Motors warranties are not worth the paper they are written on.

Any advise on options I could pursue to enforce a warranty repair would be very much appreciated.

Terrible – Cannot wait to get rid of it ! So not happy ! Have advised anyone I know who is thinking of buying one, to really think twice before they make that mistake. They did just under $6,000 worth of work, thank god it was still under warranty, but still cannot tell me what the actual problem was.Have since spoken to 4 other people I know of who have one, ALL of them have had same problem and same outcome !!! One has broken down 4 times, and had to be tilt trayed twice !! Mitsubishi say there is "no fault" with the Triton, however, have since found out that whilst mine was in for the 3 weeks, so were 5 others.......all with same problem !Now the SRS airbag light has come on and will not go off, another trip to Mitsubishi.....this time some part behind the steering wheel has "worn" and is affecting the wiring !!!!!!!!!!

For a 4Cyl Diesel Turbo, it gets up and boogies really well. Consumption for its size is good..(usual story, the harder the workout, the more you will drink). Bad – After owning a 2005 model, I think Mitsu have definatly taken a backward leap with the engine. There is no comparrison with power and towing capability. his Hilux! With any sort of load on it, it is dangerous as a 4wd, you need to use the brakes on any down hill grade as the engine won't hold it. I have had constant problems with it, and other owners I know of this model form similar opinions. fuel economy is great, steering lock far better than previous models. Fly by wire throttle is abysmal! The thing runs on for up to 4 seconds after lifting your footoff te accelorator. Will not hold in low 4wd on hills even empty! Windscreen wipers on intermittent have a mind of their own. Noisy engine and it constantly requires wheel alignment with every service.

Very good vehicle – Purchased a 2007 Mitsubishi Triton VR 3.2 turbo diesel dual cab ute about 6 months ago to replace a 2003 3.5V6 Holden Rodeo LT dual cab which had many engine problems that could not be fixed by Holdens. the later 2.5 litre as I think the 2.5 is too small to propel such a large heavy vehicle, especially when towing a caravan. The manufacturers state that the 2.5 is more powerful and more fuel efficient than the 3.2litre, which is probably correct, but I believe that in the long run the larger capacity will do the job better, easier and last longer.

The Triton is taller geared than the Rodeo, with a better turning circle, and does not have the torsion bar front suspension as most of the other dual cabs do.

I am very impressed with the Elizabeth Mitsubishi dealer (Agostino) as to their service and spare parts sections, and both sections are a lot cheaper re their excellent service and parts than the local Holden dealer for the Rodeo.

Update

2007 3.2 diesel Triton, 4wd, good overall vehicle, is coming up to the 120,000km mark, and only has the surging problem back for the second time. Appears to occur more after a 2-3hr highway run and then acts up when driving around the city etc. going through the gears, and sometimes there is a lag after the motor is being pushed and then accelerating, and it appeared blue smoke was being emitted from the exhaust, but the same thing was seen when being revved at the dealer and the mechanic stated it was a white diesel cloud. The Triton has been very reliable so far, very economical on the diesel, the turning circle is very good. Only problems have been minor, air bag warning light fixed under warranty, and a shudder in front discs when braking, which only required a machining, and problem most likely caused by the previous owners harsh braking & overheating of the discs.

replacing it!! Great interior and very comfortable back seat. The Triton comes with lots of great features like the rear diff lock. (GLX-R) It's a fairly economical ute and price wise I think a very good package. The rear electric window is a great feature that I use all the time. Front seats are not the most comfortable and factory suspension is really quiet poor. I had mine replaced with aftermarket suspension which improved handling, ride, and clearance.

Our worksite is full of the base model dual cab versions and you can hear them coming from miles away because the rear suspension is squeaking. itself is basic on this model. I have aftermarket cruise control which I recommend, if it is for long distance use. Heaps of room in the cab including the rear seats. Well appointed compared to previous base model. Electric windows, CD/MP3 player.  The seats are terrible for long distance. I drive between 3 and 12 hours to see customers each day and my company hasn't done me any favours with this vehicle. Around town it is ok except the seats providing no support what so ever. The exterior reveiw mirrors are stupid. Both have the "objects are closer than they appear" mirrors.  I find this extremely disconcerting when backing into any situation. Having a canopy with dark tinted glass means I cannot see out of the internal rearview mirror either. It annoys me that the Mitsubihi Corp thinks I am too stupid to work out where vehicles are situated around me. I will be trying to replace the lenses with standard ones. The engine is powerful and economical which can only get better as it runs-in. The turning circle is brilliant. The engine is very rattly just off idle in each gear until the revs build up. Sounds like marbles in a tin. Not sure if this has to do with the common rail. I suppose Mitsubishi will tell me it is nothing to worry about. Gear box is very sticky through the gears both up and down the box. Not easy to get it in or out of  first gear even with the cluth fully engaged. First service is past due, so see what happens afterwards.I do like the vehicle and friends with the GLX/R and GLS tell me their seats are OK. None have driven more than a few hours in one sitting though. They do look like they have more support and a bigger squab. I will update this when I have 10,000k on the clock. Great turning circle. Powerful. Economical. Roomy. Stupid exterior rearview mirrors. Dumb front seats. Designed for maximum discomfort.
