Mobi Passport

No longer in business – Used Mobi Passport on a previous trip to Hawaii with great sucess - no problems at all. Looked to them again for an upcoming US trip to find they have closed down.
Poor European coverage – Bought two SIMs for a recent European trip. I cannot say that mobi passport was completely terrible because i managed to get some minimal level of data coverage in Italy and Germany so i was never completely isolated and we were able to use google maps instead of GPS. However, i was only able to make calls back to Australia (every time i tried to call in Italy or Germany the call failed). I had no coverage in Dubai.
This sim worked perfectly in USA – I bought the USA AT&T sim card online from Mobi Passport. It arrived quickly but I had trouble activating it because the instructions I received with the sim did not match what appeared on AT&T's webpage. Then discovered that Mobi support was only via email! As I was leaving in 3 days, I panicked and was annoyed. However [name removed] responded… Read more
very quickly, had activated the SIM for me, and answered other questions I had. I called AT&T from Australia (following the instructions with the sim) and bought my $60 unlimited monthly smartphone plan and put the charge on my Aust credit card. I also added the international pack for $5, in case I needed to call any landlines in Australia while away. The Sim worked perfectly the whole time from the moment I landed, calls texts and pretty fast data, and I didn't have to worry about recharging as I'd bought the monthly plan and was there for two and a half weeks.
Very impressed as I have tried other options on previous trips with results varying from terrible (TravelSim) to good (T-mobile via travelgear.com.au), but Mobi now the cheapest option for US sims. Just made it so easy to be able to set it up completely before leaving, including getting your phone number, and have it work smoothly on arrival when in complete jetlag. I also didn't receive any calls from random strangers as others report from time to time with other sims. Only negative was that the one landline call to Australia that I tried, I got an AT&T message which said 'you don't have enough credit to make this call'. Hmm. Not Mobi's fault but I couldn't be bothered to take this up with AT&T. Otherwise I was incredibly happy and will use this again and try Mobi's sims for other countries as well. Reliable, good coverage, relatively cheap, fast support International landline pack add-on from AT&T did not work
No good in Canada or Mexico – Not easy,AT&T will not take Australian credit cards for payment over the phone or on their automated top up facility. You are better off just going to a AT&T store -$10 taxi ride from LAX. No charge for the sim card and they change the settings in your phone so you have data and internet access- much less stress and cheaper insteas of paying $20 for the sim in Australia AT&T has excellent coverage in USA AT&T charges roaming in Canada and Mexico
A lot of messing around – Purchased 4 cards for a month in the US. Cards arrived promptly with pretty good instructions. So far so good... Tried to apply credit through third-party payment sites before we departed and no joy. Tried several times and contacted two of the third-party payment companies and still no good. Had to wait until we landed in the US to… Read more
load credit. Took quite a few attempts to finally get on to a at&t customer service rep who was extremely helpful. Applied credit to 3 cards and the fourth card wouldn't accept my credit card so had to use another credit card which thankfully worked.
3 of our phones are iphones. Spent quite a bit of time downloading the APN for one of the phones and found that the other phones (iphone 5 and iphone 4) worked without having to install the APN at all???
I probably sound like a novice when it comes with technology however I do deal with technology quite a bit, both professionally and socially, so I wonder how some less experienced would get on (e.g. my wife would have had no chance!).
I originally chose Mobi Passport over a couple of others I was considering because they advertised their offering as allowing tethering, however after making the purchased I discovered this wasn't so - not sure if their web site had changed in the meantime or perhaps I hadn't read it properly in the first place??
Worked as advertised – Having a US mobile number before I left enabled me to pass the number around to family and friends prior to leaving for Hawaii; added credit to the SIM card (AT&T ) before take off - touched down in Honolulu and the phone was working without issues. Added an international number package and was calling home from my iPhone within one hour of landing. Brilliant! It just worked as advertised
Excellent Service – I used Mobi Passport on a recent overseas trip the the USA and Canada and found their service to be very helpful. I had the numbers before I departed so I could give them to my family. I also had no problem adding data plans while I was over there for my Samsung Galaxy S2. Saved me a fortune - Highly recommended.
