Mont Epoch

Preliminary Review - First two nights, cold but clear and calm – • First thoughts after two nights in the mountains. • Very spacious width, length only just enough for me (I’m 6’2” or 188cm). • Bought this tent because the design looks bombproof for full on mountain snow weather and it’s a kilogram lighter than my MEC North Wind 3 person bombproof snow tent. • So far tried it out in the foothills of the… Read more · 1
snowy mountains over a couple of clear winter nights (-3C or so) – no snow and no wind to speak of). So results preliminary at this stage!
• Love the reflective guys
• Love the elastic loops for the toggles for doors and screens and vent windows;
• Strangely there were droplets of moisture on the outside of the inner and on the inside of the outer in the vestibule. There was frost on the outside of the outer during the night.
• The ventilation is excellent – two ventilation windows in the apex of the tent – fully equipped with fly screen or fully openable, similarly for both doors. Nice easy operating zips work well for both inner screen and outer door. Good design.
• Was impressed to find no condensation inside the inner in the morning, without making the inside overly cold or excessively ventilated.
• Love the storage pockets – generous size and four rather than the usual two.
• Gear loft included – removeable.
• Strange foam spacer between inner and fly in central section – works on sides but at apex in this section the inner appears to touch the fly forming a possible leak point.
• Was something sewn inside one of the cross pole pockets that prevented the pole from going through – after serious trying tried it from the other direction – passed through without problem.
• The biggest issue I have with this tent is the number of fiddly Velcro loops on the fly that need to be attached to the tent pole frame, at least in stormy weather. I think there are at least nine of these, and the inside of the fly and the outside of the inner would be getting wet or snowy while they were attached if you were in a storm. I’d hate to be setting this tent up in a snow storm with freezing cold hands.
• It has a LOT of pegs! Says it comes with 16, mine has 18 but needs 19 if you peg all base and fly loops - more if you peg out the guys! However haven't tried attaching fly to pole tips which would remove need for many pegs.
• The front vestibule is ideal for sheltered entry and exit or cooking up in foul weather. The rear “vestibule is a useful small storage space for boots or packs. Space; Strength; design; ventilation; weight; door/screen zips; large vestibule; pockets/loft; reflective guy ropes Large number fiddly velcro tabs; concern at fly/inner contact (not yet tested in foul weather);
