Followed instructions meticulously, but only rye grass germinated. Still have nearly half pack left if anyone thinks it is possible to get kikuyu to germinate Purchased at Bunnings

Purchased this product from Bunnings and followed instructions. Have seen no germination of seed, so contacted Yates direct. Told us we sowed our seed too late. However, the seed was sowed in early autumn as per instructions on the box, but Yates told us we sowed too late. When accessing the map on the box, it clearly states that the seed is… Read more

suitable to grow in our area. Will return unused seed and get a refund. A friend has had similar results with Yates seed and told us to use a much cheaper brand, success finally and for a whole lot less. Will no longer purchase Yates products. Don't waste your time or money with Yates products.

Stay away, scam, terrible product – I bough this for my back yard that is about 45 square meters and as soon I started spreading the seeds I realised that it would not even come close to be enough to cover the area, ended up needing another full box to be able to cover it all. Then I waited for the Germination, watering many times a day and making sure the soil stayed always wet,… Read more

terrible result, growing only in patches and and leaving many empty spots even if seeds where obviously spread on the area, good soil was put down for the seeds and probably less than 50% of the area actually got covered. Of this small portion that actually germinated, just a couple of seed were actually kikuyu, 99% was ray grass. Find some better brand if you don’t want to do the job twice.

Waste money – I bought 6 boxes of these munns professional sun and shades grass, it grows after 6 weeks then dies in summer , it’s a waste of money/time /water and expensive the only good thing about it the birds can’t see the seeds, better to go to a turf places and roll it yourself much cheaper. In Adelaide area this product is a big no no  Show details

Two and a half months later! – My 100% pure emerald green kikuyu has turned out as expected. Two packs of 2.5kg pure 100% kikuyu, stated on to the packs to cover 250 square metres each (500 square metres total), sowed over 200 square metres into premium turf soil two months plus ago has turned out to be a flop. Daily watering and wetting, power feeding and daily nurturing has… Read more

all gone to waste. All I eventually achieved was some lovely green blend which dried and died after a few warm days in December, leaving the soil 99% bare with approximately 1% kikuyu of sorts, struggling. My original kikuyu in certain areas of the area covered over by the new soil, is beginning to reappear. Two lots of comments to Yates via their website, about their product and its ambiguous/deceitful labelling, has not received a single response. Need I say more?

Perfect lawn with this product, Kikuyu during summer and Rye grass during winter is perfect combination – Seeded the new packaged munns November 2019 in Melbourne and with a little work ended up looking perfect, I think the picture speaks for itself taken 9 September 2020. I did add a package of munns pure Kikuyu when i was seeding. Show details

Rip off – I wonder whether the reviews that recommend this product are genuine or whether they bought the same product as I did. My experience with Munns Emerald Kikuyu Lawn Seed Mix is similar to the most adverse reviews here and their help contact emails were also completely useless. Show details

Dont do it. 100% weed grass and NO kiyuku germination – Typical of the stuff bunnings sells. Pure junk. The weed grass invades everything in winter and its seeds profusely. Now I have to buy expensive herbicide to get rid of it Show details

1 kg outrageously expensive – What a ripoff! $49.95 one kg, WHY?? We didn't buy it. Have bought another brand - $11.45 1kg - which we have used a few times before, is shade, frost and heat tolerant and as far as we can see, does exactly the same job. We can't the point eh  Show details

100% Seed? – Have purchased kikuyu seed in the past but was unable to buy from my local supplier so I tried Bunnings and found this product. Kikuyu seed is very expensive, (at $67/ kg) at local rural supplier so when I saw this at $20/400g I thought, ok cheaper and “100% Pure Kikuyu seed” which would tend to mean there is only Kikuyu seed in the box....… Read more

smaller print then says “Mixed with natural wetting agent”.... hmmmm ok ... not sure why you need this when you water it constantly till it germinates. So I open the box and was so annoyed that it was a box wetting agent with a little seed thrown it. I’d estimate that the seed would be 15 -25% of the box. I will be returning this to the store. What a con!! Would rather pay $67 and get 100% seed!

Mums Seeds complaints – The worst seed that I have ever planted. I thought that paying top dollar for this product that it would work even though I have watered it my whole lawn is dead. Would not recommend this product to anyone. Paying 70.00 per bag plus fertiliser was hoping for a great lawn I am so disappointed because now that it is summer I have a brown and dead lawn which has costed me in seed fertiliser and lots of water.  Show details

Love it!! – Really impressed with how fast we had beautiful grass!! After the first week we had grass already sprouting week two we were shocked to see the grass beautifully growing and minimal patches week three now and i have had to carefully trim the tips down as it was surprisingly long i have watered early morning and late at night and all I can say is… Read more

WOW! Very impressed with this amazing product. It was well worth the cost and in 2-3 weeks we can mow it and use their recommended fertiliser. If you follow the steps and water it well you won't be dissapointed.

Latest con with gardening seeds – I purchased this Munn product because it said 100% Kikuyu seeds clearly on the back. I wanted to avoid a mixed seed product... Mixed seeds are blended with cheaper Rye Grass and other types, so you get less quality Kikuyu grass growing per square metre. When I opened the packet, I immediately noticed it was almost 10% seed and 90% wetting agent!… Read more

In fact, I had to sieve through with my fingers to find any seed. Bunnings used to sell a Brunnings 100% Kikuyu seed product. I've used the Brunnings product on many occasions. It's literally 100% Kikuyu seed when you look in the tub. So I knew what a 100% Kikuyu seed product should actually look like and could spot the discrepancy against the Munns product straight away. Bunnings have now replaced the Brunnings 100% Kikuyu with Munns '100% Kikuyu', which is just as expensive, but a fraction of the actual seed percentage. When I complained to Bunnings they just snubbed be off and said go to the manufacturer. Wrote to Munns with the complaint they gave me some rubbish about how the coverage is the same per volume, which is a total lie. The seed count is what reinforces the grass density. Otherwise, over time, you'll eventually end up with weeds that find a space to grow through. All there are doing is inflating the packaging volume with cheap wetting agent to maximise profit then placing some marketing spin to bamboozle consumers to make them think they are doing them a favour. Kikuyu seeds are much more expensive than wetting agent. So be aware. The latest con in the gardening game is to inflate the volume of a seed product with wetting agent and falsely label it a 100% net product. Here is the link to the Brunnings product, which is ACTUALLY 100% Kikuyu seed: http://www.brunnings.com.au/view-our-products/garden-care/lawns/lawn-seed/kikuyu-max-lawn-seed.html

Munns Kikuyu is Excellent! – Great new lawn product. Sown in late August (Sydney) and result was lush within 6-weeks. We now have 250 m2 of thick green healthy lawn! Followed the packet direction (i.e. applied the seed in combination with Munns "Starter Mix" and watered everyday). Thanks Munns, great product! Highly recommended as an alternative to rolls of turf and MUCH cheaper.  Show details

Great for Schools – We have several different types of grasses growing at the school. The problem is, that each grass tries to out compete each other during different times of the year. So we end up with a lot of worn out areas from the kids. Also certain areas do not get a lot direct sunlight during winter, this leads to fungal infections, which leaves massive bare… Read more

patches leading into spring/summer.

I planted Emerald kikuyu, and have not look back. Absolutely tough, Hard wearing, not affected by black spot fungus. Survives on a lot less water when established, Great colour. Does not need as much fertilising as other types of grasses.

For those who have seed in the garden beds, the seed is very tiny, and the slightest breeze will send those seeds blowing far and wide. When I sowed my seeds in one area, I found that some of the seeds had blown hundreds of meters away.

Very small amount for the price – I found for $20 you only got a few hand fulls of seed ,only enough to do about 3 meters then you got to keep it wet that means watering it 3 or 4 times a day in hot weather and you have do that even after it comes up for weeks all it dies. Better off buying real rolls of grass.  Show details

I Love this grass – All I wanted was a fescue lawn, then my kids got a dog. I cannot believe how versatile and tough this emerald kikuyu is, colour is outstanding. Kikuyu haters all say it will invade. This is about on par with couch and has not been a problem for me. Munns have also been very helpful over the phone, great company.

Crap Munns – Claims all big as they know that people will not complain as this is so subjective. Never buy anything from them.. I tried few of their products and just got disappointed after waiting for long. Cannot believe this ripper company is from SA, when I tried to call them they were trying to make it hard by asking me to email them. Is there a way to take them legally?

It's already sprouting! – I had two bare dusty patches in my front yard, not knowing what to do I threw down some of this seed only 1 week ago & it's already sprouted. Nothing special done with the soil first, just a rake and watering everyday. I have very boisterous kelpies so have temp fenced off with garden stakes and chicken wire. It's looking promising so far so… Read more

Just LOVE this Lawn! – We are dog owners and breeders and have a lot more than the usual one or two. And because we really love our pooches they are inside dogs. We purchased a new (to us) home and it already had an established lawn, but it was the Rye or Fescue type of grass which grows well but is not known for its durability. Sure enough in the cool of winter when… Read more

the lawn slowed - and with the multiple foot traffic of our hounds; we soon found they were bringing mud into the house! Yuck!

So - we decided that we needed a more durable lawn, one that could stand up to any punishment and didn't need lots of care. Having had good experience in the past with Kikuyu I started to look in that area, along with Couch. I found an advertisement for Munns Emerald Kikuyu, specially bred to be better than ordinary Kikuyu. The packs come pre-mixed with a Mother blend which I think are the Rye/Fescue types too - so that they come up faster and give you a quick lawn, until the slower Kikuyu catches up and dominates. The only requirement is that the soil temperature needs to be 25C and above; so for us in Victoria that meant late Spring.

I won't bore you with all the details of our soil preparation - (we had heavy clay which required the trucking in of sand and hiring some machinery) - but we soon seeded - watered and waited. Sure enough within days we saw the shoots of new grass coming up and gradually it began to look like a lawn. Trouble was - I could tell that it was still the Rye/Fescue type - and not Kikuyu. I must confess that there was a period where I wondered if it was going to work! However - once we got continual days of warm weather, you could see small sprigs of Kikuyu in amongst the other grass and this soon took over.

It's now our second year - the Emerald Kikuyu rules the roost and has given us a really tough beautiful dark green lawn that needs almost no maintenance. It certainly up to the task of handling all of the traffic from those canine feet too. I do use Scotts Lawn Builder fertiliser in accordance with the instructions - so the lawn always has what it needs for nutrition. Wonderful dark green colour, super-tough!
