I bought the National Luna legacy 4 years ago thinking I would pay top dollar for a fridge that would last a long time but instead I got an overpriced POS, it leaked out all of its gas. I have a Waeco that I bought in 2002 second hand and it is still working fine. DO NOT BUY NATIONAL LUNA... Show details
Unreliable and overpriced – This fridge would probably get a good rating if it was a third of the price. But when you pay top dollar, I don’t expect product failure within the first year (total replacement, not repairable) and a second failure 6 years later. I’ve still got an Engel that outlasted this product by 10 years. When you pay top dollar, I pay that for longevity.… Read more
These units don’t have that, and they should be heavily discounted until they earn the right to claim they are reliable. Don’t buy this overpriced product. The exterior design is attractive, but don’t let that fool you as to what’s on the inside - unrepairable and unreliable at heart.
Started off well, but – We have now owned 2 of the 90l twin compartment fridge/freezers. The one is still operating, but the second, which is the newer one at about 4 years old, has stopped working. I took it to a repairer who said that National Luna had used non-copper pipes in some of it's models, and that after a time the joins started leaking. Unfortunately there… Read more
is nothing that can be done to repair it. I contacted National Luna in WA and was told that there is no solution. Now I am just hoping that the second one does not go the same way! A very expensive lesson to learn - even though reviews are good, specifications can be changed without notice.
They don’t care – Fridge stopped working when just under 3 years old. Had not been used a lot as I also have two Engels. Sent 3 messages to National Luna asking about Warranty, never got a response. Extremely disappointing that no one cares to respond. I’ll buy another Engel, they have lasted a lot longer. Show details
Worst Portable Fridge Don't Waste Your Money – DON'T BUY A NATION LUNA FRIDGE THERE JUNK This is not a cheap fridge to buy. I bought the fridge about 5 years ago, like most portable fridges it kept the beer cold in the garage. After 3 years it stopped working so I brought it in to see if I could get it fixed. It has a gas leak that couldn't be fixed so it went to the dump. I contact National… Read more
Luna and discussed the fact that it was still in warranty and after several call and email it was replaced. Two year latter the new fridge stops cooling the beer in the garage,it has a gas leak and can't be fixed so its now going to the dump. I have a 80 liter engel fridge- freezer that is at least 14 years old its rough looking but it cold, cold cold. Only ever changed the fan in it about 7 years ago. I will never buy another National Luna product they are junk and not fit for purpose.
Luna headache – Got the fridge just before my 50th birthday. Gonna be 55 next week. The fridge hasn't worked for the last year. Doesn't get cold. There's 3 of us that bought the exact same 90l luna fridge around the same time. I paid about R14000 for the fridge. When my fridge was at home and not being used for camping, it was plugged in. And how often do camp? 3… Read more
maybe 4 times a year. All of us having the same problems. The other 2 had their fridges regassed a few times already but only last a couple of months. Apparently you can send it to the manufacturer but it will cost around R8000 to repair it. And it's not only the 3 of us having this problem, there's a lot of other people experiencing the same issue. R14000 is not cheap and it lasted only 4 years. But then again why would you want to make a fridge that last longer. It doesn't make sense. Just like vehicles, the money is in the repairs. I wouldn't recommend this.
Defective out of the box – Great looking fridge. Great layout of baskets. Unfortunately that’s the only positives. Defective out of the box (temperature variations of 12.5* / slow cool-down) 30 days to be fixed after being ensured we would be given a new fridge. Now it’s been certified as fixed the three third party thermometers show temperature on 39 litre bin is… Read more
within 1* of set point / temperature on 11 litre bin is within 4* / 5* of set point. With it set to maximum -24* we get a bin temperature of 19* / 20*. We only intend on having ice creams in the 11 litre side which means we have to set the fridge to -22* to get -17* / -18*. The compressor is rarely stopping to keep these temperatures
National luna smart compressor runs on high at any set temperature colder then -11 which means high power usage especially as it’s constantly cycling. (The same as other users have found out) There’s a reason National Luna specification sheet show power consumption results of dual zone set at 3* / -11* instead of 3* / -18* the way other brands do.
National Luna have said the bin temperature will never be the same as the set temperature. We have our friends dometic sitting along side our National luna and the third party thermometers are within 0.5* of it’s set point in the dometic. National Luna’s claim of precise temperature control is false.
Not what you pay for – Purchased this Nov 21' n thought I was buying the Limousine of outback fridges with their African Desert picture on the brochure but more importantly the price of the unit, considerably dearer than the many opposition units. Before I go any further, I have no reason to doubt that the single lid units may well perform OK but the Dual Zone is a very… Read more
different story for what I was wanting. I had been spoilt by the use of a Trailblazer many years ago and certainly put it to the test. Expecting the Dual Zone to perform as good was not the outcome. Yes, it did pull down quickly to -20 but efficiency was poor to say the least as it rarely stopped for a break. I purchased this unit for a planned trip later but also a second freezer at home. The external n internal build quality along with the electronics appeared to be excellent but as the Beach Comber found out 11/11/16', they certainly did not put it to some serious, Australian Outback Conditions, as my testing time frame was never over 30deg NQ in a shed with very little humidity. It may well work differently in an air-conditioned station wagon but certainly not in the conditions I'm considering again. We all know how many Engels are siting in the back of Tradies Utes for the last 40-50 years, people please don't think you can treat these the same, as warranty will wipe you. My two complaints are the that with both Dual Zones on freeze it produces enormous amounts of condensation between the two lids because of an extremely poor seal mitre joints that are hardened from the molten welding process which intern limits the remaining seal to do it's job. I spent considerable time trying to rectify this problem buy trimming the excess plastic around the mitre joint to no avail. The best the service agency in Ormeau Brisbane could offer was soak the seal in warm water for an hour ? It does not work. I was also informed by an independent fridge tech, that the fridges have a refrigerant pipe a lot higher in the walls apparently, being closer to the lid which may or may not be the issue on the dividing wall. One would hope that N/Luna rectify the problem because I found it unacceptable and thankfully the agent I purchased off give me a full refund. My second complaint was the way the Warranty Service Manager at AECAA treated my complaint, (trained very well in winding you "the customer" up) as he had a wonderful way of coincidentally, distorting the phone conversation/insisting he didn't receive any emails or pictures ? (but not very well trained, because in our distorted conversation he happens to accidently answer a question I put forward to him in my email that he claimed he didn't get) /insisting there was not a problem with the fridge without even seeing the photos supposedly. He would be the worst I have ever experienced in this situation, and I'm no pup can I say, people be warned. I do believe they do have a good unit but far to expensive and need to do more serious testing for the real world like 45deg + as we know the African n OZ desert can produce and obviously address a new seal structure. Sorry to drag it on but it's the only way to inform people beforehand
Is this the new norm? – I purchased a brand new National Luna Legacy model NL60L from Canyon Off Road in Booragoon WA in April 2022 but haven't got off the ground with it since it was supplied in a sealed carton without any power cables, warranty registration card or instruction manual. I'm assured these are great fridges but can't say I'm impressed so far with this… Read more
?oversight or is it intentional, thus forcing buyers to make additional NL purchases just to get their new car fridge started. Maybe NL marketing branch needs to finish Consumer Behavior 101.
Great fridge and freezer – We've had this fridge for 5 years now and it has served us well. We purchased it based on reviews and word of mouth and haven't been disappointed. The 60L model is a great size for two people and runs really well as a fridge/freezer. The only down fall is it would be better with two lights as currently there is only one light in the right side, other than that I highly recommend. Show details
Reliability - This fridge saw the kids go up – I bought a NL 80l fridge in 2004 in South Africa and have used it on many overland and 4x4 trips to many remote locations travelling some very rough terrain to Angola, the Namib desert, Mozambique and various other areas. The Fridge came over to Australia in 2014 and has been to many destinations here as well, including Fraser Island. The fridge… Read more
is always on and when not in use its keeping beers cold in my shed at 1 deg C. Its never missed a beat. Had to replace the fan once which was getting noisy after many years of bouncing around on dirt and rocky terrain. I did the replacement myself, ordered it online and took less than an hour to replace. Currently planning a trip to Cape York with it. I have been on many trips where other fridges could not keep the goods frozen due to high ambient temperatures but I never had any issues with the Luna's performance or power consumption. I will definitely not look at any other brand if I have to put the old lady to retirement.
Great Fridge (Legacy model) worth the money – The fridge is really well made, wanted a separate freezer and this 72litre twin door is perfect. Each side can be set to fridge or freezer, cools down really quick and maintains temp really well. I particularly like the fact in the instruction book it shows how to pull apart the compressor area to clean which is great. The seals are also… Read more
replaceable which is also a plus, the baskets are very solid and make it easy to get to stuff. I changed the end of the lead to a Anderson plug to suit camper ( comes with Merrit plug + socket) It chills down really fast I had 1 side set to -6 the other to +1, it was showing +17 deg in both compartments at start up and took about 20 minutes to get cooled down (empty). Just need to do the standard stuff with a camp fridge like start it from home on AC and pack pre frozen items and other stuff already cold, saves using battery power. Ice cubes stayed frozen for 6 days @-6 so did meat etc. always take too much stuff!!! Anyway very happy with fridge so far, fingers crossed!
It takes too much energy, we expected to be well made as it looked, it turned to be just a look – It takes too much energy, we expected to be well made as it looked, it turned to be just a look. We really liked the design and the outer layer of the fridge, but we you are out there camping it’s not about the look. Show details
Find out how National Luna Fridge and Freezer compares to other Portable Fridges / Freezers
Know better, choose better.
Really really bad fridge freezer – Do not buy the dual fridge type freezer cuts out until fridge reaches temp, rotting food twice. would not replace with a single zone. purchased at opposite lock Welshpool WA Show details
Good dual zone fridge – The NL 50 Twin (40lt fridge/10lt freezer) is, like all other NL fridges a quality built product , the only issues I have had with it was that it had an over pressure fault which rectified itself (unfortunately after 48 hours) otherwise it has been excellent. I'm not a big fan of dual zone fridges as you HAVE to run one section as a freezer to get… Read more
the other side as a fridge- the freezer section will be -10 deg C lower than what you set the fridge side at, this can be an issue if you want say icecream as you would have to run the fridge at -8 which is not ideal. The good this though is that the 2 sections are completely separate so there is no chance of accidentally freezing anything unlike the CF 60/80 WAECO which only have a plastic divider to seperate each section. This also makes the NL a very efficent fridge/freezer, set on 1 degC the fridge used 1.3 amps per hour over 24 hours inside my 4X4 with a temp range of 24C to 37C. The lid is interchangeable from a side opening to a front opening like the Engel fridges. It has 2 internal fridge baskets which are good but if you use them you cannot stand bottles up and 1 freezer basket which I use to stop the beers from marking the aluminium sides (I only use the freezer only for express chilling beer!) I've pulled it apart to clean it as I purchased it second hand, good to find a re-charge port for the refigerant, this is a rarity in portable fridges. It has a battery monitor on the temp panel which is very handy and you can set an alarm if there is a problem as well as a 3 stage battery protection setting, like most new fridges. Pros- build quality Cons- Cleaning can be a pain, they have plasitc bottom sections that are good for containing spills but where it meets the aluminium sides there's a tiny gap that can retain smells (DON'T put bait into the fridge unless you want to spend ages trying to clean it to get the smell out!)
Not as advertised – I'm currently talking to the manufacturer about my problem so will update this If it's resolved Not as advertised they say in 43 degree temps it will get to minus -18 well it has no chance best I got was -17 and by then the fridge section is warming up so it cuts in to cool the fridge and whilst it does that the freezer drops back to -4 or even 1 degree at times and things are melting. Fridge runs 100% of the time in these conditions. Show details
Great Fridge – I bought a 60lt twin second hand on a whim, and having had dual zone fridges before from Waeco's to Engels I was frustrated that in order to operate one part as a fridge you had to run one part as a freezer, this uses more power and makes the freezer space unuseable if you don't want your food/drink frozen. The answer (for me anyway) is the NL… Read more
60lt twin, it can be used as a fridge or freezer or a combination of both, build quality is far superior to anything I have seen and having used it camping in warm weather it maintains the temperature well especially inside my camper. I did a power draw comparison running my 40lt engel (same age) and they use the same amount of power when both set on 1 deg. The internal baskets are a great idea, making getting stuff out of the bottom of the fridge a breeze. For $300 more than a 60lt Engel combi fridge it's a no-brainer as far as I'm concerned. Excellent power useage @ 2.5 amps when running and did a 72 hour run to test consumption when I first purchased it and it used 0.6 amps per hour empty @ 19 deg ambient temp.
Best fridge ive owned – My 72ltr twin door is now 3yrs old and has run continuously on either 240 at home, or in the ute on 12volt, since I pulled it out of the box. Turned off only a few times to mop the cabinets out and then turned on again straight away. Current draw is usually between 1.9 amps to 2.5amps dependent on load in the fridge. I have owned a few other… Read more · 1
brands, a garbage chinese one in the early days ( never again ) then a couple of Engels which were reasonable fridges but drew more current than the Luna and were much noisier. The Luna is very quiet and vibration free.
I know a few people with larger Luna's ( 90 and 125ltr ) that have been running fault free for nearly 10 yrs.
Will buy another Luna again if I ever need to replace this one.
Love the 90 ltre National Luna – We have the 90 litre duel control, can be fridge and freezer. I used both sides as a fridge. I fitted heaps in it and was used continuously for 10 months in all types of weather (up to 45 degrees +) never missed a beat and didnt draw heaps of power either. Would definitely buy this brand again.
Not as advertised – Bought a 72 Lt fridge freezer. Filled it with food and ran it for a week with the fridge side set to 2 degrees and the freezer side at -16 to try get iceblocks to freeze. It ran 80% of the time in 30 degree heat on 240volts in a house. Turning the freezer down further for deep-freeze makes it run 90- 100% of the time. Doesn't live up to advertised power usage and won't go below -20 even though it can be set to -24.
Truly worth every bit of my money – I purchased my first national Luna 60L stainless steel fridge & freezer about 10 months ago, I have also since purchased another one just the other day, I sold my Engel 57 litre combi to purchase it as I wasn't impressed with the noise engel compressor made and the combi setup doesn't really work that well, the national Luna uses the world… Read more
renowned danfoss compressor and was originally built to world health organisation standards. Mine runes dual thermostat so you can set each bin independent of the other the bonus is you can also use both bins as a fridge if your requirements change the freezer side is 25L and has 60mm of installation and the fridge side is 35L and has 43mm installation. I've been on quite a few trips canning stock route for one and in 43degree temp it still maintain -1 at what I had it set it with ease the compressor doesn't cycle as much as my engel use to, and it's virtually silent when it's not in my 4wd it's in the shed for drink fridge so it pretty much never gets turned off, it's never missed a beat very solidly built I do have a protective cover on mine but when I tested it without the cover performance was not effected at all I can highly recommended these fridges yes they are very expensive but I believe in the old saying you get what you pay for.

Unfortunately the second National Luna has stopped working. This one lasted for nearly 8 years, but it also has piping that has leaked at the joins.
