Philips Shaver Series 5000

Replaced my 20 year old HQ8250 and cant believe the difference. Very smooth shave with no irritation. I now use water instead of aftershave. The usb charge lasts forever. Show details · 1
Doesn't do the job well enough – I keep pressing the on/off button with my thumb when trying to shave. If I haven't had a shave for a couple days it struggles to get the hair under my chin and throat area, just glides straight over them. My 2 previous shavers were the Philips 1000, much better. Top shaver and value – After using Panasonic, Braun and Remington I have had-all of them fail in different ways bit sad. So went out looking price of some shavers we’re round $400 so I decided to purchase the Philips 5000 for $120 was very surprised at its performance very clean shave and half the time to do it. I’m very happy with this shaver well done on this model, price and performance Show details · 2

Got 2 years out of it, mediocre cut, not worth replacing blades – Bought this to replace a 3000 series that eventually died from water ingress, despite being sold as wet/dry capable. I have a coarse beard and the 5000 series blades have trouble with thick hairs, unlike the cheaper 1000/3000 series. Don't believe the hype about 'auto sensing' blahdeblah. The old style blades work much better for coarse beards. … Read more
Shaving head develops a recurrent screech (as mentioned by other reviewers) which keeps coming back if you're not religiously cleaning it.
I was initially worried about having to rip the head off to use the trimmer (and vice versa) but the attachment point hasn't worn out.
Proprietary charging plug is archaic, in this era of USB-C PD.
A replacement set of blades ended up being more expensive than an entire 1000 series shaver, so I bought the latter instead. Looking back at my shaver receipt history, I'm replacing these every 2-3 years - so it's not really worth the price premium for the questionable extra features of 5000/7000/9000 series.

Pretty Decent Electric Razor – Lets start with the obvious, no electric razor is going to give as close a shave as a blade, but it sure is quicker and easier. That's the point. It really is a chore to shave every day, most women reading this may challenge that statement, but all of the men reading this would totally agree. It takes time, it is messy, and often it hurts. The… Read more · 3
easier, quicker and less messy option is to use an electric razor - unfortunately, the result is not as good. Some may be happy to sacrifice the result for the convenience of an electric razor and I am one of those people. In addition to all of the other hassles, I have a mole on my face which has been nicked by bladed razors too many times to count (normally when shaving for a function / event).
The Phillips S5000 is the bottom of the range, but even so, it is quite good. Wet or dry which means that you can use it with or without shaving cream, or even in the shower - that's a weird experience. The battery lasts for ages, mine has lasted since fathers day on the initial charge (almost a month), and the result is clean and tidy.
Having round heads, it's hard to get the sideburns straight, but it comes with a separate head which is intended to trim them, though it is a bit fiddly to swap the heads around.
Overall, I like it a lot. So much more convenient, even if it means that I don't have as close a shave.
So far a good little shaver – I have been a Philips rotary head electric shaver user for as long as I can remember. I've had a few over the years and I don't use any other shaver at all. My previous shaver had worn through two sets of blades and I had learnt to sharpen the blades, but also learned they can only be sharpened effectively once or twice, after that they don't… Read more · 1
stay sharp so I guess the hard metal must be gone. A new set of of genuine Philips blades were going to cast around AUD$140, I paid this kind of price a few years back but not again, I had no idea how long the battery had left in it.
I looked at the normal reviews by users including Product Review and bought the Philips Series 5000 from Costco (cheapest and a life time warranty thrown in for free). It cost $160 which was enough, it would have been easy to spend a lot more but my experience is the expensive models do not represent value for money. I have now been using it every day for a almost 2 weeks and can say it works fine.
Good points - quiet, light and easy to handle, gives a quick but good shave with no scratching or pulling, the charger cord plugs into the shaver not via any intermediate rack, dead easy to clean by rinsing it in the shower, so far the battery is still going on the original charge, has a separate beard trimmer that plugs in the same place as the shaver head and words OK, comes with a protective travel case thats no too big. Philips provide a replacement set of blades which doubles the life of the shaver at no additional cost - nice.
Not so good points - must be cleaned often, no more then every 3 shaves for me or the shaver is too clogged to cut properly, the separate trimmer has no place to store it when travelling. I could not believe the quantity of little boxes inside little boxes used for packaging.
It is a simple shaver that just shaves well, it has a flashing indicator to remind you to clean the heads and another to tell you its time to recharge the battery, I believe this comes on a few shaves short of being flat - we'll see.
If it continues to work as it does now I continue to be happy.

Fine shaver (once you solve the screeching problem which can occur after some use) – Good solid shaver but after a year or so's use mine started to make an intermittent screeching noise. Other people have clearly had the same problem, but there was no solution on the Philips site. Here is the solution: The problem is not with the shaving heads and is not solved by changing them. Instead it is associated with the three drive… Read more
pillars. These are below and interface with the shaving heads. They contain internal springs. The problem is solved by thoroughly cleaning these drive pillars and their internal springs with a toothbrush and running water. Simple as that, so why is this solution not on the manufacturers site?
Good shave and value – JB HiFi had the 5000 series shaver on sale $99 which I reckon is good value, opening the box initial impression was cheap and flimsy. The shaver comes with a shaver head shield, a charging plug but no bag. Initial full charging was quick and first use the shave was good, heads do not seem to spin as quick as other shavers but initial first few… Read more · 1
shaves are good, fairly quick and close. Nice being able to rinse the shave heads under the tap making it an easy clean

Plenty of power – Ive had my Phillips 5000 for over a year, cost around $85 on special. I only shave every 4/5 days and this thing eats whiskers i am quite disabled with a muscle disease and it fits nicely in my hand so easy to use. It has a good battery life and charging is also a breeze. It came with a trimmer but I don’t use it much, the razor trims around my… Read more · 3

dont bother – Shaver was actually really good, but with only light use it has only lasted 4 months as the motor has decided to stop working. Always had Philips shavers in the past but now i wouldn't touch one with a bargepole. Not cheap but rubbish. If i can only convince one of you not to buy this junk the review would have been worth it. Show details

Dreadful waste of time & money – Very happy with succession of Philips shavers over 45 years, but not the actual succession, only necessitated by Philips replacement heads being such a rip-off you are compelled to buy a new shaver for less. Until this horror story, that is. Should have spent more time examining it, and stuck with the conventional, simple models. Where to… Read more
begin...? 1. The 90-day money back satisfaction guaranteed blurb was worthless when I neglected to unwrap it for some months. 2. Can’t remember what exactly now, but some trivial aspect of use was not explained in the awful ‘user guide’ paper slip, requiring a call to Philips before I could use it. At least it was promptly explained, but why not in the guide? 3. The guide is laughably poor. A series of ‘international’ images - eg man holding shaver, man holding shaver to face, etc. Puerile and utterly uninformative, and useless. Why do they bother? 4. It’s so slim you can’t hold it as you would any other, with a thumb tucked around; you’re obliged to hold with fingertips, giving poor control. Unbelievable. 5. The power switch is located where a right-handed man naturally holds his thumb (sic - thumbtip) causing a constant on-off ... lift shaver from face ... ON-off ... lift shaver from face ...ONNN!-off ... You get the picture. Mindlessly bad design. 6. The trimmer is separate! What? Worse still, there’s no obvious key to head alignment. You have to squint, then fiddle and twiddle to get a head on. Appalling. 7. But wait, there’s more. Head-cleaning is a nightmare. The hinged cage retaining the rotors is easily accidentally dislodged, spilling rotors everywhere. It is NOT easily re-attached. Nor are the rotors easily re-inserted in the cage, in any event. Atrocious.
Compared to past experience this model’s poor design instils the view Philips shavers have turned to faecal matter. Avoid like the plague. I couldn't bring myself to donate it to an enemy. It's binned.
What a bad joke - customer service is useless - web page non existent – Purchased a Phillips 5000 model 5579/60 in August 2022. And have been trying to extend its warranty ever since. I'll still be using an old fashioned razor blade – I purchased my razor from the Shaver Shop in early July last year (2022), paying $199 for it. Right at the beginning of January it stopped working when I was cleaning it. On repeated tries it would start and run for about two seconds before cutting out. On trying the following day, after a few false starts it started running again. But then when I… Read more
went to shave with it, it simply would not make the slightest dent on my stubble, it just wouldn't shave at all. On taking it in to the Shaver Shop, I was told that there was nothing wrong with it, it just needed new blades at $70. I declined to purchase the blades. My reason? I've still been shaving with a blade, I only used the Philips once or twice a week for the past six months. If it really needs new blades after what is effectively two months worth of regular use, what is the point? And if it still didn't work at all, I would have been even more frustrated.

Australia gets different and much lower quality – I purchased this on line, TARGET, in March 2019. The product has failed and I started to do research. the way I am an electronic engineer, so I think I know something............ Since I had the " bad" habits of keeping old boxes, I immediately compared the old box with the new 5000 series arrived from Hong Kong. 1) The old S5050/06 was made in China 2) Has NiMH battery technology The new one: 1) Made in the Netherlands (Holland) where Philips originates being a Dutch company. 2) Battery technology Li ON type 3) The body (using a magnifying glass) says:" Philips of North America.
Am I guessing, or there are casts of different qualities we do not get to see in Australia ?

a good shaver that i would personal recommend – This shaver leaves my skin really smooth and is extremely easy to clean. The worst shaver I have ever had! – This shaver's motor is seriously underpowered and slow, making shaving very slow and often unpleasant. Secondly, the design of its blades is horrible, they get clogged quickly, after one shave and dismantling, cleaning and reassembly is frustrating and slow. The worst shaver I have ever had! Slower than a wet week – This shaver works to be fair. It will shave and give a relatively close shave. However, in the time that this device takes to give a reasonable shave, you could have lathered up and blade shaved 3-4 times and received twice as good a shave the first time around. Very disappointed in this unit. This is my first electric razor and I'm afraid that it… Read more

Philips S5050 Electric Shaver - it’s ok for the price – We’ve bought the Philips S5050 Electric Shaver last June and had been using it ever since. It’s ok for the price but it’s not as good as other shaver we’ve had. The blade isn’t very sharp - doesn’t leave a clean cut after shaving. The battery seems to run out quicker compares to other model. It’s not a very high quality product.

Philips 90 day money back guarantee worked well – What constitutes a good shaver is obviously very subjective. Bought the Philips S5550/44 as a gift based on a friend's recommendation, specifically because it had the Turbo function. Disappointing from a previously reliable shaver company – I bought this shaver in March 2017 for $199 at a shaver shop in Melbourne, having owned 3 previous models of Philips shavers and been happy with them. that stopped working after a year. Philips replaced the trimmer (after a 2 week wait) but the replacement also failed after a year (almost to the day!). I discovered the cause (whiskers get trapped in the unit and no way to remove them except by taking it apart with a screwdriver) and reported that to Philips, with no interest on their part. The replacement has now also failed despite my engineering efforts. Won't be buying a Philips again.
