I signed up for a trial of Reckon One and, after deciding it wasn't suitable for me, I went through their web app to cancel the subscription. Something clearly didn't work as it should, because the cancellation didn't go through. Then, on 13 August, Reckon charged me for an entire YEAR of the service. I contacted them as soon as I realised what… Read more
had happened and explained that I wasn't using the system and had attempted to cancel. Their response?
“According to our terms and conditions, we can't issue a refund.”
Seriously?
It's been 10 days since the charge. Not six months. Not eleven months. Ten days.
I'm not asking for a refund because I've used the service and changed my mind. I'm asking for a refund because I attempted to cancel, the cancellation apparently failed, I am not using the software, and the company has nevertheless decided to keep an entire year's subscription fee.
I understand businesses need terms and conditions. But when those terms are applied so rigidly that a company would rather keep a year's payment for software the customer isn't using than resolve an obvious customer-service issue, it raises a bigger question:
How petty can a company get?
Terms and conditions shouldn't become a shield against common sense.
This experience has completely changed my view of Reckon. A software company can have great features, but if the attitude towards customers is “the system charged you, tough luck,” that's not a company I want to do business with.
Reckon One: be very careful when starting a subscription. Apparently, getting out of one is a very different story.

The worst customer service and technical support you will ever come across. Indian call centre that is totally and completely incompetent, provide service times for call backs that they never meet and refuse to allow you to escalate the issue to a supervisor. Just AWFUL!

Original review 2024 - missing features, not user friendly
The accounting software provider we were using shut down and we were offered free migration to Reckon One by the company that owned it, so we went with them.
Having now had some time to use Reckon One, it is okay. Just. The software is stable, no lagging as can happen with cloud accounting packages, and it is easy enough to use. However, there is a caveat on whether you should get it or not: It is more for small businesses with one bank account who pay bills one by one and receive payments one by one, and never have a need to look up anything ever again once processed.
If you do need to go back and view or edit a few entries it does something that is hard to believe - you go to page 42, say, of your list of transactions and edit something, close it and it takes you back to page 1. Then you must navigate back to page 42 to edit the next one. The other odd thing that it does that I've never seen an accounting package do before is that the reports you generate in it do not contain the reference or description. They only show date, payee and amount. The payment reference or receipt in the online report is a link you can click on to see what it was, but you can't print it in a way that shows these details. Again, it does not appear to have been designed for working with past transactions. Our accountant seriously dislikes this package, and with functionality or lack thereof like this sort of thing, I think I can see why.
If you have multiple bank accounts or billing is combined in any way, it's not good. It doesn't handle splitting bills or invoices that contain multiple items well. For example, if you do batch payments in online banking (one debit to multiple payees), you cannot enter that in Reckon One as there is no way to split a payment to multiple suppliers. You'll need to delete the transaction and manually type in each individual payment with appropriate cross references to show it's part of a larger transaction in the bank statement.
It also seems to assume that once something is paid and the payment allocated, you will never need to look it up again, which last time I checked is rarely an accounting reality. Banking transactions show with date, payee, amount only - not the supplier or client's invoice number. Payments linked in bills do not show which bank account they came from; you'd need to go to another screen to look up that payment and see which account it came from. There's no search function as such, just a means to filter results in the various columns, but you will need to know the exact amount or word you are looking for to do this. If you want to filter for an invoice or bill number in banking transactions, you will need to have typed the invoice number into the description when allocating it otherwise there's no means to pick it up from the body of the transaction as there's no search function.
The payroll section is not too bad but there are many settings that all need to be filled in. If you get certain settings wrong when creating a pay item, there is no means to edit them, nor will you be able to delete that pay item if it's ever been used in a payrun. Only option is to create a new item from scratch and start using it. I can see this getting messy if we end up with loads of defunct pay items; could be hard to make sure we only use the correct ones going forward.
Tech support is professional and the phone is answered readily. Again, if your question is basic, no problem, they will have the answer for you, but if it's a bit more specific or complex it can be a struggle.
There are a few videos as online tutorials and some written guides but not many. Some haven't been updated for years so things have changed on the screen and the steps no longer work per the Guide. They are also just limited to the basics; if it's anything more specific there probably won't be a video or guide on it.
There's also a section where users can request new features in coming upgrades. I looked up a fairly basic function that our old package had that this one does not, and found requests going back to 2018 from other users asking for it, so not sure if anyone at Reckon is reading these.
To sum up, if you have straightforward accounting requirements, Reckon One will be fine. It is cost-effective and simple to use for basic bills and invoices. If your business is more complicated than that, would probably recommend going for something else.

Service and was told that I didn't get renewal advice because I didn't have the newest (Personal) software V31. I was never advised that I needed to update and had I received a renewal advice I would have done so. The other disturbing aspect is that I have been a customer for over 20 years, and while they are offering all sorts of new customers massive discounts, your loyalty counts for nothing. I advised I wished to complain and the robot at the other end said "that's not a complaint". What ???!!!! I reminded said robot I was the customer and I am complaining !!! I am complaining about extortionate fees, lack of advice to renew/update, lack of recognition of loyalty, clunky activation process etc etc. Why do I keep using it? Because they have my 20 + years of data. Dislike this mob intensely !!
Follow-up · I use a desktop so portability of data (to another device) is not possible. You can export data to excel. I use the reckon payroll app which is easy to use once setup. I don’t have a great understanding of technology so when problems occur or changes are made I need to speak to a team member to resolve issues. Team members are polite and informative and offer good service. Show reply

It appears that the only option is to cancel the subscription, but your card details may still remain with them. This means they could continue using your card details later unless you notice the charges.
These types of hidden subscription charges are unfair and can result in customers losing money simply because they forgot to cancel before the trial ended.

Subject:Request for Refund of Unauthorised Charge – Reckon One Account Dear Reckon Customer Relations Team, I am writing to formally request the refund of an unauthorised $12 charge applied to my Reckon One subscription account. knowledge or consent. Shortly afterwards, I noted a $12 debit from my bank account, which is used for my Reckon One subscription.
Upon contacting Reckon, it became clear that a Reckon BDM had added these two businesses to my account. These businesses are clients of my accountant, to whom I had granted access, but I was never informed that they would be added to my subscription, nor did I authorise this action. As a result, the subsequent $12 charge was made without my approval.
Since 19 January, I have made multiple attempts to resolve this matter with Thomas and Lavu, but the refund has still not been processed. While the amount is small, the principle is important: the charge was made in error and without authorisation, and therefore must be reversed. It is now 7th March 2026!
I request that the $12 be refunded immediately: although this has been promised since 19/1/2026.
I write this as a review: so that any other customers of Reckon can be made aware of the poor service and follow up!

We were frustrated when account logging changed and didn't allow multiple users to log into a single account when the other registered users were out of the office or not in the same time zone. This added an additional cost for seats that could not be used over the full 24 hours by different registered users.
We also had initial resistance from our Accountants who were biased towards a competitor but that was resolved between our office and the reviewing accountant.
