Rip Curl Search GPS Watch

Love This Watch – Had my GPS2 for years now no hassles apart from resetting the app occasionally. I was saving a dog a few years ago from being run over and it bit me on the watch thank God. The watch had a huge scratch, contacted RipCurl to get the glass replaced they sent me a new watch yeeew! Show details
Good watch if you use Apple products – This is my third GPS2. The first two froze and i received replacement watches. The watch is pretty reliable. My suggestion is to have it ready to go before you get in the water. Once in the water it takes a long time to find the gps signal. If you do it while walking to the water, by the time you've done your stretching, it should be… Read more
ready to go. Expect the watch to miss waves and also to freeze occasionally. Every few months, after downloading recent surfs, I'll do a full reset and the watch works much better. The biggest downside is that there is not an Android App. Other companies are now releasing watches that have surfing apps, but they're twice the price of the GPS2. The upside is that you can follow your mates surfs if they have the GPS2. So, all in all, a nice watch but it needs an Android App to go to the next level.
Got this from my uncle – Don't know how old mine is rip curl ultimate tide watch a1144 - search gps 2 and it's and it's still working what should l do with it don't know why uncle got rid of it Show details
Apple Watch - No Android - Blasphemy – Only Syncs with iPhone. Which ever pretentious jerk at Rip Curl decided that should have his head checked. Really should be marketed as Apple Watch, not a rip curl watch. Boo to you. Boo. Show details
Horrible customer service – I have had the GPS watch for less than a year when it stopped working. I have been trying to get hold of rip curl customer service with only automated responses. Save yourself lots of frustration. DO NOT buy this watch Show details
Customer Loyalty Sucks – I've had to 2 Rip Curl Tide/Surf watches. Same trouble with both models, the bands break. The first watch just died & couldn't be repaired, the 2nd watch was sent back for a band replacement at the cost of $90, I was up for another band recently which was going to cost another $90 all for a $399 watch. Rip Curl offered a half price deal on one of… Read more
their newer models which I accepted. Unfortunately I gave my old watch away to a mate with a skinny wrist who could still wear it with the broken band. This was unfortunate, as after failing to mention it, Rip Curl said they would only honor the half price offer if I sent my old watch back. Apparently their tech staff had to inspect the broken band to make sure it was broken, & they could perhaps refurbish it & sell it to some other sucker as brand new. I have purchased Rip Curl products for over 4o years... not anymore
Terrible customer support – While this watch is fun to use while it is working, the customer service is non-existent. I used the watch for a while and had questions-no way to find out answers. Then, after 1 year, it stopped working. I sent it in to be repaired and they have had it for more than two months. You cannot communicate with a human being and all you get are canned… Read more
emails telling you that you are a “rad customer” for being "so patient". Do not waste your money on this watch until they get their act together.
Glitchy at best. App is worse – Ive had my watch 6 years. I have the original. Ive had various problems in that time, all fixable until now. I had over 1000 waves on 2 boards that now says ive caught 20 instead. 6 years data down the gurgler. The support link on ripcurls own gps page does not go anywhere, emails to ripcurl support un-answered, messages to instagram un--answered… Read more
and just this week a personnal email to " the watch guy " at rip curl and big suprise, no reply. The flat out refusal by ripcurl to not even give me a reply says to me they know their app is severely flawed. For the record if your getting close to 3000 waves on your watch expect the app to start wigging out.
Good watch, ordinary battery life – The watch itself is cool- works well, never leaked. However if you get 18 months out of the battery you’re doing well. Likewise the wrist band- I’m about to post off the watch for the second replacement. I’ve been through two batteries as well. And that’s not using the stop watch function and the light only every now and then. My daughter’s… Read more
version also made it to about 18 months before battery went. From talking to others this seems typical. Just a pain posting it off, coughing up more coin and not having it for a couple of weeks. I have another digital watch, with very simple functions, however it’s been going for about 15 years. I think Rip Curl would do well improving the battery life. And the longevity of the wrist bands.
Not worth the price – Band broke after 3 months and was advised by Ripcurl the band is not covered under warranty. Also was advised prior to purchase by ripcurl via email an android app was in development and wouldnt be far away. 1 year later when contacted again they said they are no longer producing an app and have no plans to in the future. Will say what you want to hear to make a sale. Show details
Great watch – Awesome watch it does exactly as advertised, the app is great and is easy to navigate. The watch itself has a long battery life in between charges and is easy to charge. It fits well and is very comfortable, light and easy to operate it also reads easy while in the surf. Show details
A great watch for surfers – Had mine for about a year, it's survived a lot of use however I'd probably be reluctant to use it every day, I pretty much only wear it when I'm surfing , but will wear it for a few weeks at time if I'm surging everyday. With that in mind it's been very durable but I probably would have killed it by now if I wore it every single day. It's… Read more
comfortable and very secure on the wrist, can be hard to get on and off but to me that's a bonus as you know it's not going to get ripped off your wrist when the swell is chunky. Speaking of chunky, the watch is chunky, it's a large watch. Doesn't fit too well under a snug fitting wetsuit and it get caught up in the arms of the wetsuit when don your wetsuit, so careful manipulation is required.....or, you can take it off put your witty on then put the watch on, sounds like a mission but really isn't that bad.
What's really really cool about this each is the features. Using this watch properly has so many benefits not only with monitoring you surging and performance but being able to track and trend conditions at your favorite breaks and record your best surfs on different boards in different conditions. It really ads another dimension to your surging experience and if you take the time to know and understand the features of the watch you can get a lot out of it
I got the watch primarily for its gps aligned tide function which has proven to me to be quite accurate but not perfect, but the closets I've ever seen to bang accurate in remote locations. It has enabled me to be on the money wherever I am on the planet with regards to tidal info, and I've appreciated that a lot .
The graphics are lame for a watch of this price point but all that's been improved with the new one version 2,
All in all I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the watch if it's something you'll use for all its features other than telling the time, but the new version will be even better!
Well.....Lets hope that the new Search GPS 2 due out in October is a vast improvement – I have had mine for around 3 years and I do love the functionality of the watch. But.......I have had mine back in for repairs 7 times... and it has been fully replaced twice!!! I have been advised that I am the unluckiest owner in the ...WORLD!! It was fully replaced 18 months ago and started to leak water 4 months ago. Just been advised by Rip… Read more
Curl that it is out of warranty and will cost me $249 to get repaired. Told them to forget it.
I will wait for the new version to come out and give it a go. I certainly hope that it is a vast improvement on my last one....
The team at Surfection in Mosman where I purchased it from have been fantastic in dealing with this issue.

Didn’t even last 12 months – This is an expensive watch. The band broke within the first several weeks and the watch stopped working yesterday (after a battery change). Rip curls returns policy is so difficult (not the first watch we have had to return) we can’t be bothered and will just go with another brand next time Show details
Need a lot of improvement – The watch is not build to last the rubber band is really fragile and the bad news is that is only one piece with the watch. The other problem is the accuracy of the data provided, it’s really off. Also I had a problem with the watch trying to locate signal. It is a really good idea but unfortunately it wasn’t well designed. Show details
Best watch I’ve ever owned – I really don’t know why there is so many negative reviews about this watch, it’s awesome. I’ve had mine for 3 1/2 years and it’s still going strong. It’s a game changer. I can look back on every surf I’ve had in the past 3 1/2 yrs. Ripcurl are really fair and helpful if you have a problem to. 10 out of 10 Show details
Worst watch I have ever had!!! – Do not buy one of these overpriced, basic, horrible watches. It is all just a gimmic disguised as a watermans watch. For $500 I would expected a lot more watch, its junk! The GPS feature never works, for a wetsuit company that prides itself on its rubber the rubber around the face of the watch is disgraceful and rips and deteriorates at the… Read more
slightest bump. What ever you do look elsewhere and DONT buy one of these pieces of crap. I contacted Rip Curl about the band but apparently it isn't covered under warranty. Absolute Joke! Buy a watch from a watch company!!!!
Rip Curl Tidemaster 2 - a surfing watch that is clearly NOT capable of going in the water – I would give zero stars if possible. I purchased a RipCurl Tidemaster watch in 2012 to use when I go surfing and have had no end of trouble with it. Firstly, the battery life is appalling meaning it must be returned almost every 12-18 months for replacement at $50 each time. First battery died withing 12 months of purchase, returned to rip curl… Read more
who advised the watch is "water damaged". I don't know how they figure this since it is a SURFING WATCH!!! I.e. of course it has been in the water. They replaced it under warranty, made me pay for a battery and acted like they were doing me a solid favour.
Next battery replacement the same issue - water damaged. They repaired it again under warranty.
Third battery change, same issue - water damaged and this time they refuse to repair under warranty saying they no longer carry spare parts
Do not waste your money on this junk!!
Has a lot of trouble picking up gps!! – Always has trouble connecting to satellites! I've missed out tracking my best surfs of my life in Indo because this stupid watch can't pick up any gps satellites! Devoted to say the least! Even at home in Aus it has its good days and it's bad I regards to picking up gps! Just not good enough for how much spondoola I payed!
Rip Curl = Rip-off – My Rip Curl watch stopped working properly after a bit more than a year. I sent it back to the service centre who informed me that the battery is faulty and that Rip Curl only has 1 year warranty on batteries! They sent me an invoice for $49.99 for the replacement. My watch was $159 and a standard battery in a watch (and the one I bought was… Read more
pretty basic!) should last about 4-5 years. If the battery is faulty it should be covered by Ripcurl. Also a jewelry store can replace batteries for $15-20 dollars. Even after complaining Rip Curl made me pay for a repair of a watch that I didn't damage and is just extremely poor quality and stopped working. This is not what you expect buying a watch of $159 after less than 1.5 years! I am already extremely frustrated with the process and without a watch for almost 2 months as this is how long it has taken to get to this stage. Now I had enough and will just pay for it, but it was definitely the last time I will buy any Rip Curl product!
Crap – I'm still try get my money back !! Did go three times to replacement and still doesn't work. And the rip curl is not wanting to give my money back !!
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY – The quality of the rubber on this watch is not up to it. I purchased a gps watch less than a year ago and the firstly the band hold broke within 6 months. Rip Curl charge me for a new one. Then the rubber around the watch face all split and peeled and when I sent it to Rip Curl to be replace under warranty they said that it was part of the band so… Read more
it wasn't covered under warranty!!! I have to pay another $110 to fix it. which I have past on as it will just split again in a few month. I work in an office so I haven't been work on the tools with it or anything like that. Just a low quality product at a high quality price. Also it is too big and apart from the gps it is really basic technology. Don't believe there sales pitch. Don't waste your money. Look at other brands or wait until the product improves.
Cool factor watch for surfers – I don't wear watches but I got this one as a gift. I have to say its pretty good. It gives me tide information with one click, and records my surf sessions including wave speed. I don't know if any of this information is useful but its definitely got cool factor. The watch itself feels a little light and I'm not sure if it will last… Read more
the punishment of being in the ocean a couple of days every week but we will see.
All this stuff also syncs with my wife's iPhone but doesn't have an app for my Samsung Note 4.
Overall so far I'm pleasantly surprised and loving this little gadget...lets hope it holds up.
Rip Curl Rubbish – How come Ripcurl charge $500 for a two bob watch?my sons search gps watch fell to bits after a couple of weeks still waiting for a replacement a month later from the local surf shop we bought it from. He earnt $15 an arvo stacking shelves to save for it .Rip Curl have no soul!
