It has 2 good options new to us; the defrost and reheat buttons. Most of our raisin toast and toasting bread is frozen so the defrost worked well. If I put thick frozen bread in without defrosting it’s often toasted on the outside but cold inside so I liked this addition. Used the reheat button on some cold toast and yep, it works .

The crumb trays are small and hinged ( one for each pair of slots). Easy to use but I prefer the slide out version on other models. Might be harder to scrub them when still connected and you have to take the whole toaster to the sink. As it’s just new, they’re easy just to open and wipe clean …. for now.

We’ve cooked, toast, raisin toast, muffins and crumpets. Remember to adjust the browning control. It’s a bit of trial and error but bread is around a 5, raisin toast a 4, and crumpets and muffins can go to 7. Managed only to burn the raisin toast so far.

Problem with most toasters including this one is consistency of “browning” within each slot. One side can be well toasted and the other not so much. You get to know which is the best slot for different uses so at least you have 4 to choose from here. Having said that, it’s not as bad as our old $200 Smeg 2 slice so Russell Hobbs wins there.

I liked the simple symmetrical design and practical functionality of each button and lever. The Matt black matches the kettle and also blends nicely with other black and white appliances we have. Price wise it’s a great option for under $200 for the kettle and toaster compared to the Smeg ones we looked at for over $400.

So far so good with this trendy toaster. I’d recommend it paired with the kettle to make your morning toast and tea with nice matching appliances.

would do the job well too. The 'Brooklyn' is much prettier to look at than the 'Addison', with larger knobs, larger buttons and clear words to explain said buttons whereas the Addison (the toaster being reviewed) relies solely on imagery which speaks to it's minimalistic design. I will point out that the small images and knobs/buttons could be an issue for someone with any visual or fine motor issues (I'd highly recommend the Brooklyn in that case).

There's nothing complicated about the toaster (no-one needs that when you're fumbling around the kitchen pre-caffeine) and the images to indicate what the buttons are for are pretty self explanatory - cancel, defrost and reheat. It has all the features that we would need, and no more. The ability to use only half of the toaster at once is also a great feature. Defrost button is a necessary feature for our family of 4 as our bread stays in the freezer. This toaster is currently priced at $89 at Big W, which at quick google seems to be the going rate for a 4 slice toaster.

From a functional perspective I find it intuitive when it comes to finding the right setting to toast to my liking - not too brown, not too light - just right. It toasts evenly across all 4 slots. We keep our toaster in the cupboard and I find it light and easy to move around when I need to use it and I find the cord is certainly long enough.

I'm giving this 2 Stars and my reasons for the Star deductions are as follows: - it loses one Star because I think some might find it hard to see or use the settings and therefore it might not be ideal for some people. - it loses another Star because I think the 'Brooklyn' is visually much prettier, but I will admit this is all about personal taste. - and while I was ready to give it 3 Stars, I decided I hadn't checked the function of the crumb drawers, and here is where the 3rd Star came "crumbling" down and I found a dislike for the toaster...what an awkward process this is. There are essentially 2 flaps under each half of the toaster. You need to find a way to balance the toaster with one hand while you undo the flap with the other hand. Now because you're tipping the toaster back to see what you're doing, the crumbs simply slide in the opposite direction on to the bench, and any that are left come sliding towards you as the flap drops, again, on to the bench. I'm afraid I don't like this crumb slippery slide at all. See Video.

Great value mid range toaster – Great value toaster. I have been using a higher branded toaster for the past 10 years. So being offered a trial on the Russell Hobbs was great. think the power output of the elements might be low (but this is something that is common across the range these days I think, in order to save energy). This also means it takes longer to toast. 4. The crumb trays are a very poor design, even the cheap KMart toaster has slide-out trays; these are very awkward to use as you have to slide two fingers in and pull to get the flaps to drop down. This is the feature I hate the most, because you have to hold the toaster in one hand over a bin while fumbling underneath with your free hand so as to remove the crumb trays. Bad bad bad. 5. So, a pretty good toaster that is a little slow/underpowered and has very annoying crumb trays.

melted into it. Previous toasters that we have owned have had difficulty in loading a thicker bit of bread or there is a plethora of buttons you have to hit to be able to accommodate each variety. So without all those buttons I have to admit that I was skeptical about the Russell Hobbs toaster but I have been pleasantly surprised at the ease in which all types of bread we have tried have fit in. Another very good thing we have found with this toaster is the high lift when the toast is cooked so there is no need to having to dig out the bread from the toaster. We have had no issues with one side being cooked less/more than the other and the defrost function actually works instead of other toasters we have encountered where it just cooks it to a higher level. An easy to maneuver adjustment level to go with a reheat function make this toaster simple to use but with all the functions that are required without going overboard like some toasters on the market. Cleaning via the bottom trays is also not quite the ordeal that I have encountered on others either. With the matching kettle they certainly are a great looking set of appliances for our kitchen.

Positives - Easy to use, can simultaneously set at two different browning levels. Has a defrost and reheat function. Looks good.

Negatives • Found that it needed to be kept on a tray to prevent crumbs from going all over the bench top. The crumb trays don’t seem to be very effective at retaining them. • Naturally in comparison to a double sandwich press it has a larger footprint (39L x 38cm depth includes carriage levers of 3.5cm) so you either need ample bench space or store it away when not in use

most types of bread with positive results, different settings and times are easy to adjust and require little fiddling to get right as I have found with our last 2 toasters. Have not had any issues with bread getting stuck, have tried smaller pieces of bread and easily manages to eject, again have had issues with previous toasters. Cleaning is easy, exterior in matte black finish was a concern but it is coated with a special coating so finger prints don't show and can easily wipe to clear crumbs etc. any stains from cooking like tomato sauce etc (situated next to our stove) are no issues.

My only negative is there are no operating lights at all - which I sometimes like to see - not a deal breaker though and if anything I'd say 4.5/5 stars very pleased

quicker, especially with two hungry kids and a husband. Trying to give everyone hot toast at the same time is tricky with a 2 slice toaster when you make bacon and eggs for breakfast. A 4 slice toaster decreases time cooking toast for your family saving time.

I cooked 4 slices of my bread to test evenness of cooking. This passed 100%.

3 is a normal setting for all the toasters I have used in the past. I had to double the cooking time to get colour on the toast, but unfortunately this double time to cook totally dried out the toast making it way too crunchy. My old Kambrook cooked in half the time, crisp on the outside, softer inside so easier to bite.

The Russell Hobs matte black toaster outer wall instantly showed finger prints as well as the large stainless steel top (see photos). I am assuming this is going to sit on your bench top. The finger prints would do my head in and this toaster would soon be put out of sight or you will be cleaning it daily. I do not recommend a black toaster!

It feels cheap and sounds tinny. Buttons are plastic and very wobbly. It gives more of an impression of being a no name brand appliance than a luxury type toaster.

You need a lot of force to engage the carriage lever to turn the toaster on so pushing down hard is noisy. It probably will wake the family using it if you are up early for work.

'Easy access crumb trays' x2 as stated in the manual is a joke. Not at all easy to access and the crumbs dont even sit on the tray. They fall through the crevices onto the bench (see photo). This is an important design feature that fails.

If I did buy this toaster rather than receiving it to give a review, I would have been very disappointed with my purchase. The online photos makes it looks really nice but at $79 (as at March 2024), go to an electrical store and see for yourself and you decide if this is the toaster for you. I'm certain, you will agree with my review.

Comparing the Addison to my old 4 slice Contempo toaster I found the Addison took 20 sec longer to toast my slices to my preferred level. Toasting times vary from 1:30 at level 1, 2:41 at level 3, 3:41 at level 5 and 4:41 at level 7. The reheat functions OK and the defrost function works great and toasts a frozen toast to the same level you like. The toaster is designed for general size/shaped bread and won't fit larger slices. The high lift function works good to get smaller items out. The power cord can be managed beneath the toaster making you bench space neater.The sides of the toaster keeps cool while the top can become hot.

When it comes to toasting, the Addison seems unable to toast both sides evenly. One side always seems much browner than the other. One flaw of this toaster is the design of crumb tray. It has finger pull holes that will allow some crumbs to fall through onto your bench.

The Russell Hobbs Addison 4 Slice Toaster is not the perfect toaster and has some issues that are hard to overlook but at the end of the day it does the job.

I love how much bench space it doesn’t take up! It’s compact but a good size. Very neat, tidy and super easy to empty to clean crumbs out. Smaller than my previous 4 slice toaster. Definitely a plus for a small kitchen like mine.

I use different bakers delight bread, rarely have to change the setting. Rarely cook from frozen but it doesn’t matter the toaster, I always find after using the frozen setting you always need to pop it back down just to get a bit more colour on it. This one isn’t any different. Crumpets always need the second round of cooking.

After doing the initial burn offs i gave it a whirl. Cooked to perfection on number 3, pictured. But over time i have noticed it’s needed to be turned up closer to 4. I do think as I’ve used ur more, it cooks unevenly, my previous one was the same too. But nothing a quick pop down after spinning doesn’t fix. For the kids toast I don’t bother, they aren’t fussy.

I haven’t had an issue with jamming or anything getting stuck.

I do recommend this toaster, 100%. I just hope it has a longer life than my old Russel Hobbs when being used multiple times daily for 3 kids.

The main body of the toaster is easy to clean with a quick wipe over but the “easy access crumb trays” requires you to turn the toaster up side down to open them and then you have to revert it to try to shake the crumbs out. This can get a bit messy. The temperature setting buttons felt floppy when used and of lower quality.

is dark brown through to barely toasted. I particularly like that it doesn’t throw my toast out as my previous (and much more expensive) toaster did. The lever can extend upwards, making access to smaller pieces of toast easier (like gluten free bread or tiger bread). The toaster has a tray underneath that can be opened to remove the crumbs making cleaning easier and mess free. One of the slots doesn’t toast the bread as equally as I’d like it, but the others toast equally. Overall am very happy with this toaster.

using the other half.. and in theory you could leave different settings on each side.. but thats a gamble if you use the wrong side by accident!

o Con: To get the compact size, it only fits conventional sliced bread slices (thick or thin is fine - see photo which is thick slice bread), but you can't jam a piece of turkish or a cut-up roll or something like I sometimes do with my old toaster (this is the trade-off for saving bench space!).

o Pro: However being such a thin toaster does get really consistent cooking results as the cooking elements are much closer.

o Con: You can't lift the toast up mid-cooking to 'check' like some toasters do (if indeed you do that!)

o Neutral: Both include an option to cook 'a little bit more', the button called 'reheat' is intended for reheating cold toast, but I use it when the toast isn't quite cooked, and I want to give it another little hit (but not risk burning if I get distracted).

I’ve been putting up with my last toaster for a while now, because I paid good money for it and couldn’t justify replacing it, even though it was mediocre. I mean, why is it so hard to make a good toaster? Send electricity into some elements and voila! After so many bad experiences , I wasn’t sure what to expect from the Addison, but when that first piece of toast popped up, I actually did a happy dance. It was cooked perfectly on both sides, it wasn’t dried out and it was seriously hot. I tested crumpets, and they too were excellent. My kids are impressed too, although they may think my worship of this toaster is a bit irrational. But then they haven’t thrown away money three times on dodgy appliances. Seriously, I’m in happy la-la land. It’s powerful, so it browns quickly (one of my earlier ones turned your bread into a crouton before it got brown). Yes, this toaster has defrost, reheat, cancel, double levers and a lift function, but who cares? IT WORKS! Yes, it looks absolutely great and the matte black finish doesn’t get fingerprints, but who cares? IT WORKS! Yes, it’s easy to adjust the browning, empty the trays and store the cord, but who cares?
