Ryobi RCS3845

Had it for three years with consistent work (clearing deadfall) and some periods of heavy work (firewood). Works well with sharp blades. Can be tricky to start when hot, and can be slow to accelerate to full throttle when hot but works well when fully running. Reasonable value point (like most Ryobi). Show details
Absolute pathetic rubbish – First purchased one which lasted about 6 months with less than 8 hours use due to not being able to start due to issues with lack of spark. Ryobi replaced it without issue, the rep was at the Bunnings store and arranged it on the spot. Good customer service. Replacement one lasted for another 6 - 8 months being used for max of 10 hours in total… Read more
until clutch started smoking. Bunnings replaced it under warranty.. 3rd one barely done 3 hours work in total and kept cutting out after 10 minutes. Now won't start. BIG PROBLEM is warranty on replacement units go back to original purchase so 3rd unit only had about 2 months left. Total waste of money and poor quality. Warranty should be 2 months as this is about all they will last. So much.for building products that outlast warranty. All I have now is a piece of scrap metal and brigjt coloured pladtic. Disgraceful that a company can put their name to and take consumers money for such a poor product
Great product – Was given the RCS3845 as a gift as we have a slow combustion heater and firewood was readily available. Love the saw, purchased the RCS5050 and another RCS3845. Found them to be powerful and reliable. Must use good quality and sharp chains though. Keep in mind they are small to medium saws so be realistic. For the job they are intended for they… Read more
perform exceptionally well. Regular maintenance and a little knowledge on using chainsaws goes a long way for any brand of saw.
Crap always breaking down no after sales service from bunnings very poor – When working was effective after sales service at bunnings totally crap they don't care. Show details
ryobi chainsaws are rubbish – Have now had 2 ryobi chainsaws. A 51cc 18inch and the rcs3845. My mistake for buying the second one. The first chainsaw the first thing that broke was the chain tension adjuster. It broke through the cheap plastic casing after a couple of months then later when used continuously for about 4 hours the bracket holding the chain brake melted and fell… Read more
off. The second chainsaw had exactly the same thing happen to the tension adjuster for the same reason, cheap plastic casing. Now it wont start. These are 2 of the worst products I have ever bought and I certainly will not by another Ryobi chainsaw. I should have spent the extra money and bought a QUALITY brand not cheap rubbish. 2 broken chainsaws in about 5 years. Not good Ryobi.
WHEN IT WORKS I LOVE IT! – As above there has been a problem idling well for anything from 30 sec. to 5 mins -then stalling straight away when revs are applied. Is this common handler issue? I'm no expert user (& what expert would buy this saw LOL)... had saw stall when 10 mins into light work (maybe I ran it too hard, b'c I was overjoyed that it worked after ½ doz. tries?)… Read more
- my guess is bark & green wood clogged chain? Strange. I'll consult expert then return it if can't remedy... ps seems gr8 unstructions on the saw - though perhaps they can't measure up to machine?
Perfect for my needs but problematic – I needed a longer bar chainsaw for casual use and this ticked all the boxes. Plenty powerful and easy on the wallet. Easy to follow startup procedure and it started with no issues. Powered through the 6” and 10” logs l had with ease but the chain seem to dull quickly. The factory chain was replaced with a different brand and it’s going strong 6… Read more
months later…..the chainsaw however ain’t.
Started to notice the engine labouring a little and progressively got worse to the point where it wouldn’t accelerate from idle and with 1/4 throttle it would bog down and stall. It would start up and idle fine but nothing else. Eventually l could get it to work normally but after returning to idle the issues would return. I mixed up a new batch of 50:1 fuel but problem remained. Eventually my patience ran out so off to Bunnings I went and got a new replacement. Hope this one lasts longer as l really do like this chainsaw and Ryobi in general.
Expected more – Starts easy and idles great. I expected this to breeze through 8-12 inch logs but I was sadly mistaken. The first few cuts went fine on smaller logs but after using it for a total of 5 mins on something larger, it wouldn't cut straight and bogged down to low rpm with minor pressure applied to the saw. Chain was checked and tensioned inbetween… Read more
cutting but it seems blunt from the factory as I have never seen a 2 stroke cut so slow in my life. Edit: Cuts fine now with a new chain. Would not recommend as the factory chain is garbage and you will be buying a new chain anyway after the first 10mins.
Engine seized after 2 hours work – Engine just died after 30 mins work, and only just the 2nd time I used it. At least Bunnings replaced it no questions. Cut well when it worked. Will see how long the new one lasts. Show details
Hard to start, wouldn't warm up, no power – Bought this to cut up 2" to 8" green wood for firewood. Very hard to keep running. Followed the instructions, primed it, pulled the choke on full, pulled it twice and it kicked. Next pull it started but wouldn't idle. Tried to set the choke to half like my old cheap Talon chainsaw, but couldn't. Finally got it to do a slow idle, tried to rev it it… Read more
up a bit to warm it up, but it would just die. Tried to put the choke on a bit to help when revving the cold motor but as soon as you touch the throttle, the choke would cut off and the motor would die. After 5 minutes of this it finally would rev a bit but I had to constantly feather the trigger (constantly press it off and on a bit at a time) to build the revs. Anymore than a 1/4 throttle and it would just die. Finally got it going enough to cut some branches and small logs for about an hour, but anytime you let the revs drop, you had to feather the throttle for about 5 - 10 seconds to build the revs to maximum or you had no power to cut with. I took it back to Bunnings for a refund in disgust and decided I'll buy a Stihl or Husquvarna for $89 more at the moment. My 15 year old cheap Talon ran faultlessly every time, only got rid of it because Bunnings don't keep chains for it anymore.
Great chain saw - pity about the engine – It's a great product: good price, well designed, easy to handle, powerful engine, does the job perfectly - when it works. First start is very easy, easy access to filter and spark plug, balanced well so easy to manoeuvre. I cut 4 small trees (~20cm trunks) and one a bit larger (30-35cm) in 'no time'. I wrecked two saws in one day. Engine just… Read more
ceased - both times. I used good petrol, perfectly measured 50:1 oil ratio but it still didn't help. Job not finished :-(

After this review I was promptly contacted by both Ryobi and Bunnings to arrange a full refund. Great customer service by both
