Hard to Start – HARD TO start Ryobi RCS4640N, This chainsaw has been a pain since day one. Leaks oil Badly and very hard to Start. Would think again before buying Ryobi Petrol Gear. Their cordless tools are pretty reasonable though some attention needed in features like, Line trimmers need better heads does not cut much and mowers need a bigger catcher chute opening. I am buying your tools Ryobi but not totally thrilled. Show details

A good beginners unit – The unit is easy to start if you follow the provided instructions which are clearly marked on the handle. I used it to cut small logs for firewood and for trimming branches on a lemon tree. Changing the chain is easy enough and they are cheap to replace. The chain brake operates well, and the weight of the unit and noise level are on par with… Read more

similar sized units. I found that the inside of the chain cover gets easily clogged with sawdust and debri which interferes with the chain tensioner if not cleaned regularly. Eventually the chain tensioner gearing broke out of the chain cover slot and now will not tension. It wasn't a bad unit for my first chainsaw.

Chain does not keep tension – I have worked my unit hard cutting large trees and also roots. I have gone through 8 chains due to mud. I purchased the unit as A disposable due to the working conditions. Unit starts and runs well but for some reason the chains don’t keep tension. Show details

Starting mechanism of the Ryobi RCS4640N Petrol Chainsaw – Same problem. Start mechanism failed. Replaced under warranty but same problem occurred; this time destroyed one of the cooling fins rendering the chainsaw permanently disabled. Purchased from Bunnings at Springfield, Qld. Can reiterate that when it works its okay. However start mechanism poorly constructed. I would not purchase another Ryobi product.  Show details

Decent Saw But Doesnt Last – Had two of these now.. 2yr warranty from Bunnings.. Always started fine, good cut and decent power using as a home/backyard plus light firewood saw, but the original one lasted a year before getting noisy and leaking oil. Had it replaced under warranty, but the replacement lasted 18mths before the same thing. Decent enough but wont buy again.  Show details

Ryobi chainsaw needs redesigning – Ive had my Rcs4640n chainsaw for long enough to make a review now . Ok the good news is when it works it's not a bad little saw . The bad news is Ryobi need to fix the bad design . The pull start is very poor parts were pressed into the flywheel instead of using bolts . The pullstart just fell apart . They need to stop making things out of cheap… Read more

plastic . I know it's a cheap tool but if you're going to make these things there should be a basic standard of quality so they don't literally fall apart .

Nice and easy – Used this chainsaw on falling branches, light firewood and sawing up table legs. Its easy to start up and cut though,so far I haven't had any issues with it. Stores easily in the shed on a rack. I have to make sure the chain is oiled and in good working order after each use.  Show details

Good little chainsaw – if your use to a big expensive name brand chainsaw this may not be for you. BUT I've had mine for 2 years now and dozens trips into the state forest to collect trailer loads of fire wood and mine is still going strong. Believe me during these trips I've hammed the unit. The only issue I've had is the blade going dull, but I'm cutting Jarrah so… Read more ·  1

that's not the saws issue and to be expected. provided you keep the blades sharp and clean it between trips for the cost I think its a good little unit.

The only other things I'd mention if you replace the chain (or have a spare as I do) replace it with an oregon chain (which the unit comes with original) not a cheapy they die quickly. Finding parts can be difficult, the bar has begun to show wear and the air filter needs replacing (joys of the environment I use it in)and finding these parts is hard and overpriced when you do.

Not happy – I bought my chainsaw back in Feb of 2015 I used it aprox 1 hour and the chain had loosen up went to adjust it and 1 nut had fallen off so I took it back to the where I bought it from they fixed it with no charge now just out of warranty by 8 weeks the pull start assembly has fallen apart only about 3 hours work in total and no one at Ryobi will take responsibility NOT HAPPY will never buy a Ryobi petrol product again.  Show details

Pros and Con:Mostly reasonable quality for the price -- but the chain tensioner design is a joke – When it works, as long as you keep the chain sharpened, this little unit does a pretty good job--except that it has a fatal flaw: After about three uses the chain tensioner no longer holds the chain to the adjusted level. Took it apart to have a look, and it's just a bad design. If they'd spent 1c more and put a metal guide where the two gears… Read more

meet it'd be fine; but instead, the seat for the worm gear sits directly in the plasic cover over the chain drive. Wobble, wobble, with a few minutes use, the play in the plastic housing lets the worm gear move and the tension comes off and you have to re-tension the chain every five minutes.

Disgraceful that for the sake of not including a 1c metal guide that would have prevented the issue, the saw becomes pretty much useless.

A project model clearly managed by accountants and not engineers.

Seems value for money at first – I received this chainsaw for Christmas last year, for general homeowner use. The saw performed well cutting up small to medium limbs around the house evey few months with good power to weight ratio. But being built to a price, the gloss soon started to wear off. Throwing chains and now the pull starter assembly internals have fallen apart without… Read more

being subjected to rough treatment. Simply not worth fixing. Ill stick with my gut and buy one of the trusted brands next time. Not sure about other Ryobi products, but they have no business manufacturing chainsaws. Best leave that market to the big boys. Having said that I'm sure there are much better saws available to suit a budget.

This tool is a toy – Bought this saw to trim branches and cut small trees and logs. Wish I could say it has been reliable, throws chains every time i use it, grommets have dislocated, often wont start, Bit of a toy really. I have purchased three chains thinking it may be fitted with an el cheapo fromn the factory. Was cutting 600mm logs side by side with a guy using… Read more

an Aldi chain saw, I had keep stopping to tighten the chain and put it back on the bar, eventualy the spring on the handle broke and had to stop while my mate kept cutting, felt like i was letting the team down.

Replacement of parts through Bunnings is a joke. Trying to get a new spring for the handle was a night mare. Saw the part I wanted online for $4 but the postage was $12 bucks. So I Go to Bunnings (mistake) (only place that sells Ryobi spare parts which sucks is Bunnings) order the part, get phone call part is available pls come in and pay. I go in and pay. Phone call from Bunnings please come in and pick up your part, get to Bunnings wrong part (wth). Re order part, phone call from bunning pls come in and pay, 2 weeks later get a phone call from bunnings Rutherford telling me sorry sir the part you require is no longer available. Eventually took a photo of the model number and the part including part number and went to Bunning Kotara, same deal anothet trip to go in and pay, then another trip to pick it up when it eventually come in, received it 2 weeks later. Should have bought the part online it would have worked out cheaper time-wise and fuel, to pay $12 bucks postage. I eventually ended up here while searching for how to get my chain saw on to Idle because the bloody thing wont idle. Pay your money take your chances.

Cuts great with grunt – Bought this brushless chainsaw and having always had a 2 stroke in the past I thought that this would be a good back up chainsaw.... This is so good and powerful that my old trusted stihl is now collecting dust in the shed. Basically it's redundant. Happy with this unit!  Show details

Great little chainsaw for general use – This is a pretty good chainsaw for general yard work and a bit more. I can highly recommend it. Obviously it's not for a full time arborist or fencing contractor but for someone with a few acres to maintain it's perfect. It has plenty of power and starts very easily. I got this chainsaw 6 months ago and have cut about 10 solid hardwood trees down… Read more ·  4

and diced them into fire wood. As a guide some of the tree trunks I cut were about 60 to 70cm in diameter and took about 30 seconds to a minute to cut through. The saw is relatively light to hold so you can use it all day and it is a pretty solid build. The air filter lid could be a bit sturdier and in saying that I have not had a problem. The bar nuts, fuel and oil caps tighten perfectly and tight. For the price and my needs I'm very pleased.

Update: November 2016. I've had the chainsaw since December 2015. I use it about once a month for trees, cutting firewood for camping, pruning. Still working great.

Ryobi chainsaw 16in. RCS4640N – I had the older ryobi RCS4040B it was rubbish, kept buring the chain. Was recommended to give them one more chance, I got this new model and they have redeem themselves I have used it for 5 hours straight didn't throw a chain once. Chain is still sharp and engine is has plenty of power. Can't fault it. Recommend this model to anyone. Plus has a 2 replacement warranty.
