Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 (2023)

I bought this phone refurbished, never bought refurbished before, only because of the extravagant price brand new. So, the refurbished one was just under $1200 AUD. Had issues with it straight away, fingerprint reader didn't work, face recognition only worked some of the time, other buttons wouldn't work on it, but the basic functions worked so I… Read more
wasn't that bothered.... until the opened screen all of a sudden decided to stop working. Theres a thick black line right down the middle of the unfolded screen and the whole screen is totally unresponsive. I only had the phone for 11 months. I've researched it enough to know that it's a hardware issue and very expensive to fix. Up to $700! And through my research found that this is a very common fault with these fold phones through no fault of the owners. And usually happens just after the 24-month warranty period ends. They gotcha!!! You've just spent thousands of dollars to buy one new and 2 years later it's stuffed. Do you spend another $700 or cut your losses. With this being a common fault and likely to happen again in another 2 years, I recommend ditching it or just don't buy one at all. I definitely DO NOT recommend the Samsung fold phone of any sort, the 2,3,4,5,6 or 7. Apparently, they all do it. And Samsung knows it !!!
Z Fold 5 - Bought May 2024 Dead Dec 2024 - cracked along interior fold – Purchased JB HiFI May 2024 - dead by December 2024. Interior fold screen has developed 'bubbles' all along the fold line. Took it back to Samsung at Mt Gravatt who first told me, no warranty as the interior screen protector had been removed - yes, only to see if it was just bubbles beneath the screen protector and not the actual screen. They… Read more
refused to take it. I then got onto the online chat with Samsung who said removing the screen protector did not void the overall screen warranty. So I took it back to JB HiFi where it was purchased. The staff there did not want to take it back initially either, for the same reason, me removing the interior screen protector to check if it was just air bubbles beneath the protector. I then showed them a printed copy of the online chat transcript where the Samsung consultant clearly stated that removing the screen protector only voided the free replacement screen protector, the overall warranty for the screen still applied. JB HiFi staff then went over the whole screen to a ridiculous degree, eventually pointing out what looks like a small pin size indent in the top corner of the screen, no where near where the bubbles in the folding part of the screen first started appearing. They then told me it was not a warranty issue as they believed something had been closed in the screen. I said this has never happened. The cracks (air bubbles just started appearing up the middle of the folding screen and got bigger over time. They did not want to send it off but I insisted. So they filled out the warranty form to Samsung saying that they believe the damage was caused by me! And guess what Samsung have come back saying they are not going to cover the screen under warranty despite me having the phone in a hard case which was purchased on the same receipt as the phone, and despite me never damaging the phone. Quoted over $1000 to fix. After now reading other reviews, I have realised these phones have a known issue with the folding interior screen. And Samsung have a known history of shirking warranty claims for it. All the positive reviews that I read are from new owners, a few weeks a few months, I wonder if they will be so happy in say 6 month or 12 months. Damage to the folding mechanism is not uncommon. Z Folds are a costly gimmick. Do not buy one. It is a waste of your money. Samsung will not honor their warranty, they will find any small mark, anywhere on the screen, and use it as an excuse to say that you did the damage yourself. Sadly Z Folds are only fit for landfill. Save your money. Spend it on a good phone or tablet, not a gimmick that claims to be both and not from a company who shirks their consumer warranties as routinely as Samsung does.
Bad design no screen warranty $650 to repair – This 16 month old phone cost me $2,800 and lasted only 16 months. Samsung claim that I used excessive force. No way. The design is poor. Don't put it in your pocket!! The dust and lint etc in your pocket will enter at the hinge point and get in between the plastic cover and the picture panel. This raised plastic will put a large strain on the… Read more
wafer this panel. Failure then happens. In their operating instructions Samsung warn against dust, but publish the IPX8 ingress protection, the X means that dust ingress was not tested, strange that there is a warning about it but never tested. No Warranty from Samsung, $650 to repair it. The small screen still works ok, I will have to use it, I can't afford $650 every 16 months. Only buy this phone when Warranty covers inside screen for usual life of phone.
Bad design and expect poor support – I have tried out this phone at a showroom and would like to warn others that, dont buy. Read the reviews of others for fold (2,3,4 and 5). The internal screen wont last more than an year and you will be blamed to cause physical damage. You can't put much protection in the hinge. After 1 year, will look like the picture I shared and that is due to… Read more
the folding and unfolding of the screen.
Buy it only when samsung is ready to unconditionally suppor the internal screen for 3 Years atleast. Given the price of the phone, it is a reasonable ask. But they will never do that, because they are 100% confident it won't last beyond that.
Awesome phone with beast performance and good productivity features & packed with good camera!! – The phone is very snappy and fast with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip set, Infinity-O Display, 12 GB RAM with 256 GB ROM, 8K video recording at 24 fps (7680x4320), 4400mAh Battery. Show details · 1
Great office in your pocket – A great phone for the working person, it's a mini tablet in your pocket. Great to have the split screen function while working on documents. Show details · 1
Improved on perfection – I recently upgraded my Fold 2 for the Galaxy Fold 5. First I noticed the slimmer profile & the battery life. My pocket PC rides so well. Multi screen action gets me through work and play. Browsing, gaming and books are an easy read, even without my glasses. Show details · 1
Can't live without this phone – It's the best finger print mobile I have ever used. I am a tradie and I get a lot of cuts on my fingers and it always works. And both the screens are really well built compared to the old fold 4. And it's rugged and completely dust proof as well. Show details · 1
