choose the right one for the look and finish I wanted.
I ended up going with STP Thermo Alder, which has come up beautifully. Tony was also really helpful with things like vents, vapour barriers and plenty of general sauna-building questions along the way. As a complete novice building my first sauna, having someone willing to offer that extra advice and knowledge made the whole process a lot easier.
Below are a few photos of the build along the way. You’ll notice the timber has a different tone in some of the later photos — that’s after I applied paraffin oil to the benches, which really brought out the colour and grain of the Thermo Alder.
The sauna has turned out an absolute treat so far, and I’m really happy with the end result. I’d definitely recommend Tony and SDS Saunas, particularly if you’re taking on your own sauna build and want quality materials along with knowledgeable advice.

previous one didnt get the sauna hot enough. My electrician had some questions with installation and SDS contacted Harvia and had the questions answered the same day. Heater works perfectly and gets the sauna up to 100 degrees super fast.

I have built a smoke house and wanted the internal cladding to be the cleanest timber i could get, where i could smoke my salami knowing i wont have any odours seeping out of the timber and into the food! After two weeks of no communication, I emailed for an update (6 May). It took multiple follow-up emails before they finally shipped the panels on 28 May. However, they created a new invoice that swapped my billing and shipping addresses, sending the package to my old address. I had to contact Australia Post to redirect it.
The packaging was completely inadequate, just a small plank on either side with bubble wrap. Unsurprisingly, when I inspected the panels in August, one was damaged.
I returned the panels for a refund around 24 August. After they arrived at their warehouse, it took multiple follow-up emails (18 September, 29 September) and several promises that the refund would be processed “ASAP.” Finally, on 12 October (nearly 6 months after my original order), I set a deadline and mentioned contacting Consumer Affairs Victoria. The refund was issued the next day.
Throughout this entire process, I had to chase them at every single stage. The lack of proactive communication, careless shipping error, poor packaging, and delayed refund were extremely frustrating. I do not recommend this business based on my experience.
James and SDS were fantastic. We embarked on a DIY sauna build with no idea! James took us through the options and helped us select not on the right heater but accessories needed. They took additional calls from me as I fumbled my way through the build and we ended up with a 5 star service and a great sauna. HUUM 13KW wood heater. Takes 30 min to get to heat and sits comfortably at 80c with 10% humidity.

Toby stepped us through all of our options and has been super helpful from purchase all the way through installation and more recently with after sales service. It is rare these days to deal with a company whose staff are as professional as Toby has been. If you are after a premium quality sauna then SDS is your best option

Kangaroo Valley. The crew who arrived had an unusual site on which to build it - nestled on a recently built platform in the rainforest that wraps around my house. The experience of taking a sauna every morning is one I cherish and I cannot recommend Rico and his team enough.
The communication with the company and especially with James has been fantastic. Very responsive both on emails and phone calls. We were on a tight schedule with regards to delivery of our barrel sauna and he was able to make it happen. I assembled the sauna myself - kudos for how well the crate was packed and for the manuals that came with it. A DIY assembly is certainly doable!
