HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT – I have been cooking for over 50 years, so an oven of any kind should be no problem for me. However, I am so disappointed with my gas oven. No matter what I do, my food burns on the bottom, whilst the top doesn't cook properly at all. I bought this because I love to bake, but the cake burns on the bottom & the top bubbles! I've tried different… Read more

positions in the oven, taken out the other shelves etc, but the problem remains. My daughter wanted me to make a pavlova for her & the base burned, the top sticky & not firming up. The oven is gas but I've cooked in one many years ago & it was fabulous. There is no thermostat, so I cannot judge how hot the oven is, just as well my cooking experience helps.

Basic, problem free performer – Pearler of a cooker. It really is. Don't get me wrong, it has its faults, but after 2 years of ownership I have to have a rave. The downsides is that the over thermostat isn't all that accurate and it simply won't run low enough oven or cook top temps for some things, even with spacers on the cook top. But that's just idiosyncrasies that you will… Read more

get with any device. Different jets would probably fix that issue but I'm lazy. It's pretty bare bones, nothing fancy to go wrong and is VERY economical on bottled LPG. Uses a fraction of what our old one did. The knobs are a PITA, they catch easily and I wish I could change them out. They LOOK great but are annoying to live with and the glass is hard to keep stain free. I also wish that telescopic.racks weren't so horrendously expensive as I'd like another set. Grilling with the door shut takes some getting used to as does the cooling fan which can run for up to 30 mins after you finish cooking. Oven gets up to temp quickly, tops adjust well, everything seems to be very well constructed. Timer is fairly accurate. The top cleans easy, the oven is a little harder to clean properly.

If you are after a simple, reliable, rock solid freestanding, look no further.

The only things I will really whinge about is the knobs and the lack of any method to know what temp your oven is at. Have fitted aftermarket temp gauge.

very disappointed in so many levels with this oven – have owned C6GVXA8 for only a few weeks, there is no thermostat for the oven & Shockingly ineffeciant @ cooking you cannot know if it’s reached temperature. It really is disgusting that such a well known supposedly reputable brand would make such an altogether cheap & nasty excuse for an oven & cooktop. I don’t have to go on as problems have… Read more

already been mentioned in other reviews. It’s all about looking good in showroom but the reality is cheap components & of all things you want an oven to cook properly & not have to guess when it’s come to temperature. I’m not game to even bake a cake in this oven. Top is made of very cheap metal as it is hard to clean.

Extremely disappointing and costly – We've only had this oven for a short while (a few years) and it has been nothing but trouble since the day we purchased it. Like other reviews the oven's temperature is not well controlled. Even after a service call under warranty and recalibration the oven temperature controls it is extremely uneven (even with the fan on). We've had lots of… Read more

baking failures because of it.

A few days ago it developed a really strange problem. When the oven door is opened the all of the gas igniters turn on. It scares the heck out of uninitiated. A call to Smeg service confirmed that the oven is out of warranty and that it'll cost about $130 for the callout and first 15 minutes.

Our previous CHEF range worked perfectly for its entire life. It was changed only because it didn't match the new kitchen décor.

basic defect in oven switch – bought in jan 2016. the oven switch has short circuited three times already. so frustrating. cant use oven for 2/3 weeks as part is ordered from interstate and technician has to visit two times. appears there is inherent defect in design or placement of switch. we had old oven for 15 yrs not even once had any issues. just bought to upgrade the kitchen and always believed SMEG is the most trusted and reliable brand. well have to live with it.  Show details

CONTINUAL PROBLEMS WITH HEATING OF GAS OVEN AND GAS COOKTOP – This oven has not heated correctly since we purchased it 20 months ago I have call outs but am told the oven reaches temperature eventually. It took 1.5hrs to cook 500g lamb and the vegetables were still not cooked and they were cut into small pieces. We have had a technician out twice. He agreed the oven heat is just soft and said to preheat for… Read more

at least 15 mins before cooking. The cooktop he replaced the valves to a larger size so that has helped but I have a Bosch cooktop in our main house and the flame is strong not full of orange colour. No problems cooking with this. We have had the gas plumber out as technician said the regulator could be the problem. No it was fine.

I wouldn't recommend this product

HAPPY... NOW!! – Bought this oven from good guys for a reasonable price. It looks great! Instillation didn't take the tradie long. Found temperature was inaccurate to begin with ( I used a thermoworks thermometer) had a service man come out, thought it was fixed but it wouldn't go low enough to bake a pav ( cooked it with oven door ajar). Had a second service… Read more

call. It's all been adjusted correctly and now I'm very pleased with how even it cooks. The timer is silly can hardly hear it and the numbers on the dial are spaced in a strange sequence. Apart from these little imperfections I highly recommend this upright stove/ oven. HAPPY NOW

Not impressed – We wanted to purchase a gas/gas oven for our new kitchen, as the previous oven was all gas and we didn't have room on our circuit board for a new breaker for an electric stove. This limited our choices immediately. We opted to go with Smeg as we had purchased European brands for other appliances and realised the value for money in them. We… Read more

purchased the oven at the end of June. Our kitchen install was booked for mid-August but we were assured the oven would arrive well in time for that. We never heard anything, and in the meantime changed installers. Our kitchen would now be installed in November. In October I called to say I would be picking the oven up in a few days time. It turned out that Smeg had sent two dual-fuel ovens out instead, and they had been sent back, and Harvey's still hadn't received the gas-gas oven we ordered. It came in a couple of weeks before the install. Our plumber opened it and found a significant dent in the side and the cooktop was bent over. We had checked the packaging carefully on pickup and found no damage to the outside. Smeg offered to courier a new one directly to us. Plumber came to install the new one - same damage. We received oven no. 5 two weeks after the kitchen installation.

Aside from the actual receiving of the oven, I have not been impressed with the oven itself. The timer works about 50% of the time, and it is so inexact because there are only numbers, no actual markers. The exact same model in dual fuel has a digital timer - not sure why the gas one needs to be different.

After lighting the oven, it goes out after you shut the door at least 50% of the time. I am constantly having to check the oven to make sure it hasn't gone out during cooking.

The temperature follows a completely illogical scale, which I was assured by email was correct. There is a 160C mark, a marker, a 170C mark, another marker, a 200C mark, a marker and a 240C mark. The email respondent told me that the mark between 170 and 200 was 180. I wonder where 190 is? Why would the scale not be even?

In our defense against the timer and the temperature, we never saw one on display as the gas-gas model needs to be ordered. We were shown the dual-fuel model and told that it was the same, just with a gas oven and cooktop.

It also only comes with 1 oven rack, plus a roasting rack inside a tray. Most oven come with too many racks, if anything. 1 rack??

It is safe to say that after this experience, I will never purchase another Smeg product again. I wish I had bought Australian made.
