Smeg PUM60X (60 cm)

My PUM60X rangehood suddenly had its suction power significantly reduced one day. Then, after a while, the extraction fan completely stopped working, while the indicators and lights are still functioning. Troubleshooting on the manual didn’t help much. Show details
OK range hood, but control panel died very soon – Of 5 buttons on the control panel, 2 stopped working completely, and 1 works very bad: I have to press it, like, 50 times for it to work. Meanwhile, replacement control panel costs 500$, and that doesn't include work and callout fees.

Noisy and Control Panel Doesn’t Work – Noisy to operate even on the lowest setting and the light button stopped working. Spent $100 to replace the light bulb which didn’t fix the problem and now I have to pay $300 to replace the control panel because 1 button doesn’t work! This doesn’t include the technician cost either which will probably be an additional $200. Crazy!
Smeg PUM60X is very noisy and can not turn off via the control board's switch button – Installed as part of the newly built investment apartment. Very loud and not even turning off!? Cost to supply and fit 1 x new replacement Smeg (SMHA016W7S-06) electronic control switch to the existing rangehood: $550.00 including GST (and currently out of stock in Australia without any indication when next time available). Well there is no… Read more
replacement unit (or anything similar), according to Smeg. Try to buy another brand but nothing fits this very unusual shape which needs cabinetry alteration (costs additional $700 for carpenter to change). Very disappointing and can't see any quality. Terrible expensive lesson!
Smeg PUM60X is very noisy from begining and can not turn off via the control board's switch button recently – Smeg PUM60X has been installed by the builder since end 2015. From beginning the fan noise is very loud and the control swith ( swith button) always has problem , especially the light control button . Recently , only the button which is used to control the mid-level fan can work, the other four button (OFF button, low-level button,… Read more
high-level button, Light button) are all out of service. and I cannot turn off the range hood, change the fan level, power on/off light. To turn it off, I have to use the power outlet switch to cut off the electricity , then stop the range hood.

This product is aesthetically well designed, however recently the light switch and motor stopped working. Expected – Having a electrical trades background, I decided to unmount the rangehood and inspect the rangehood as to why it is not working. I found two faults (This particular unit) inside the control box housing the control board and wiring. a) The motor capacitor terminals are bent inward as the control housing is a tad small. This in turn causes the… Read more
capacitor spade terminals to weaken, over time they fail. Secondly I also found the active and neutral wires were jammed against the small power transformer causing and causing a break in the circuit.
A slightly bigger housing for the control/capacitor would help and if cable ties were used to tidy up the wiring.
Repaired the wiring and replaced the spade terminals for the capacitor and the rangehood is working well.
Strictly not advising any unqualified people to open the unit up, but my feedback is more for the manufacturer to improve product quality.
Just another update the controller on the PUM60X has alot of dry joints especially on the secondary… Read more (+1 reply)
Range hood will not turn off – I have had the range hood install into a new kitchen about seven years ago and after 14 months it would not turn off.had an electrician look at it and he said something wrong in circuit board and would cost to much to fix,as it in my holiday house and did not have much use.

Worst rangehood ever – I have recently moved into an apartment that has the smeg PUM60X rangehood. One of the first times using it, extremely loud even though it was on the lowest fan force. After switching off the rangehood an extremely deafening high-pitched ringing sound relentlessly rung the entire night. I searched everywhere on the internet for ways to switch it… Read more
off but not a single useful thing. I'm still in the process of trying to shut off the entire breaker but this is extremely frustrating, the loud ringing really does not help, will definitely get no sleep tonight. Discraceful product.

very noisy & doesn't even extract anything while cooking when it's brand new! – the rangehood was the builder's choice. Most importantly, it does not function as what it's supposed to do. Also It's super noisy I cannot even hear others talking, TV's on very high volumn and I counldn't hear a thing. pretty much same as the comments above. Show details

Range Hood Rubbish – SMEG PUM60X is a complete waste of money. The unit is very noisy, the switches are not reliable and it is poorly constructed. On top of this it is difficult to install and remove. No wonder it is discontinued. I now have to find a unit that will fit in its place. Show details

Insanely loud – What? I can't hear you over the sound of the jet engine in my kitchen We moved into a house that has one of these. It's the loudest range hood I've ever heard, you can't hold a conversation near it even when the fan is running on the lowest setting. Show details

Pathetic – I bought this model to match the rest of the appliances in my kitchen reno. First time I switched it on to use (only a month ago) it wouldn’t turn off. I had to turn the mains power off to stop it running. Next time the fan would only work on medium speed, again I had to turn it off at the mains. Now nothing works, the lights won’t turn on, the… Read more
fan doesn’t work at all and it’s been used for only 20mins since pulling it out of the box!
Worst range hood I have ever installed in a kitchen. Now I have to fork out more money to get it fixed so I can sell the house without a faulty range hood.

Not appropriate for an apartment – This item was recommended to me, and installed, when I had my kitchen redone. What I didn't realise then, but do now, is being in an apartment I need a system that doesn't require a vent. The kitchen company I engaged didn't do me any favours - they should have advised me and not installed the rangehood. The system was very, very noisy but that's… Read more
probably because it was in a cupboard and the air had nowhere to go. I subsequently had to have it removed and have sold it. Now I need to find a suitable replacement. Be wary of what you're buying if you're in an apartment.

Know better, choose better.
OK product – I've been using the unit for almost 2.5 years. Paid extra to upgrade to a SMEG product from builder's by default one. A bit less noisy but suction is not great (I've ducting to out). Probably was expecting a bit better from SMEG. But not truely unhappy. we cook lots of curry, so I would buy a better one next time though not sure if the extra… Read more

Have to mention that the service was good. I had a trouble initially which I called for support. Someone came and ordered a new parts which was installed after 2/3 weeks. That was around 2 years ago.

First and last time I buy SMEG – Told Harvey Norman salesperson I needed a quiet rangehood and was assured this one was good - 'it's a SMEG, they're quality". Because it was a Smeg I didn't think to check out product reviews- big mistake. It is extremely noisy, has weak, variable extraction which works only randomly as does the light. Reported problems to HN but no action after 4… Read more
months. Have spent $ installing now need to spend more $ for cabinet maker to replace. Worst appliance mistake I've ever made.
It turns on by itself – Recently purchased an 4 years old apartment that came with Smeg PUM60X installed, realised soon after moving in that the rangehood turns on randomly by itself couple times a day (sometimes up to 5 times), sometimes during mid night which is quiet disturbing, would be nice to have this fixed somehow. PUM60X - very noisy and now can't turn off! – I was buying appliance to my new home. Salesmen recommend SMEG appliance as they are from Europe. Today rangehood start ON with out any reason and stay ON all time. No response from panel control. I'm really disappointment as I can see loots of people got exactly same problems. Why SMEG didn't do recall for those faulty control panel. I… Read more

Rubbish unit, stay away! – We put this unit in at the recommendation of a salesman, advised it was "whisper quiet". What a joke. Bloody thing is so noisy that you cant hold a conversation when its on. Louder than a vacuum cleaner. Even on the lowest setting. Not to mention it hardly sucks a damn thing up. Oh, and then there are the random times it switches it self on,… Read more
and seems to mostly like the middle of the night. and it can't be switched off, which is awesome at 2 in the morning.
This behaviour started from about 4 months. Place we bought it from blamed the electrician, electrician blamed the unit.
But form seeing the other reviews here we're not the only ones with this issue. Only wish we'd seen the reviews before we bought!

Lots of noise, very little extraction – Over priced and under performs. Noise output (very loud) is not indicative of air flow (pathetically low). We've had enough and it's coming out. I would recommend that people do a little more research before handing over their dollars for this appliance. The application of a SMEG badge to an inferior product doesn't make it worh more $$$. Very disappointed.
Ripping it out, can't take this noise any more! – Extremely noisy and whether on low or high makes no difference. Smeg came out to fix a vibration problem (When fan is slowing.) and I was hoping it would also run quieter - but unfortunately not! I have had a brand new kitchen installed with quality products top to bottom and this is the one product I left to the kitchen design people to… Read more
install - happened to be this Smeg Rangehood. Like the last review writer, I thought Smeg was absolute quality product and when they suggested a Smeg I did not hesitate to agree. Unfortunately I failed to read the reviews! It is so loud that its an absolute embarrassment to have it on when I am entertaining or have visitors and it sounds even worse than my daughters cheap $200 one.
The kitchen designers have redone the ducting to try to help the situation but nothing has helped. IMO this product should not even be on the market, stay away from it.
Like a jet plane – Looks nice, lights works well, gets rid of steam and smoke when cooking on the stovetop but need to use hearing protection, even when it's on the low setting. Way too loud to be worth turning on if you want to hear yourself think. i am considering changing it out and it's only 6 month old. This will teach me for not reading product reviews before I buy. I just didn't expect this from a quality brand, wasn't that cheap either.

It's a beast – I think this is the same model as we have in our brand new apartment which came with all the appliances installed. First time I turned it on it sounded like I was next to a jet plane revving up. There was grating noise on start up and was extremely noisy afterwards. I can't say about the light as I just don't turn the unit on now. I called… Read more
Smeg and I must at least compliment them on their customer service. They arranged for a technician to call and check it out and he arrived at the arranged time. He corrected the vibrating noise but after about an hour's work said he would have to come back with another part for it. He did so but it was just as noisy but without the vibration noise. He said that "it is the nature of the beast". It seems that that was as good as it was going to get.
One of the other residents in the block complained of the same thing and said she doesn't switch it on if she has guests because it destroys conversation.
If you are at the stage of selecting such an item might I suggest visiting Winnings where you can generally have a demonstration of a working model.
Very happy with the PUM60X – We installed this 2 years back and it has been going great. The filter is easy to clean. It is a little bit noisy but a good powerful fan. Underneath the cupboards around the unit is always clean so it's doing the job. The LED lights are excellent.
