Don’t purchase this toaster – Brought this smeg toaster didn’t like it from the start, Toast ends up on the floor most times. It cooks one side more than the other. The toast jams underneath the metal holding devise and you have to get it out with a knife. It broke down after warranty and kept on blowing the fuse. Wouldn’t purchase this toaster again.

Very expensive, very poor quality – Gave up the ghost at 4 years. For $379 toaster that is unacceptable. Contacted Smeg, would not repair/replace. Should have read the reviews first Show details

Absolute garbage steer clear – If you like half your toast black and the other half undercooked then this is the toaster for you! Toasters have been around for how long now? And somehow Smeg can screw it up that badly? Either the toast is unevenly cooked, the whole toaster shorts out the power or if you're lucky to get to the stage of buttering your half black toast you're picking it up off the ground because the toaster shoots it too high out. Thanks alot Smeg !! Show details

Perfect! – I received this toaster in cream for my recent birthday and I couldn’t be happier. While it looks great in my kitchen, it also is very functional. I like to toast long slices of sourdough or ciabatta and with the long slot, there is certainly no issue. It toasts the bread evenly on both sides. Comes with a two-year warranty. I love it.

Where’s my toast? – Unless you sit there and physically watch and wait for your toast, there’s a good chance it will vanish and you’ll question your sanity. Excellent toaster if you’re practising your toast catching reflex skills. Terrible toaster if you have a dog that always beats you to the toast on the floor. Why have such hectic ejection springs? I’m not going… Read more

to put bricks in there! And where do all the bread crumbs come from? On the plus side, it’s pretty. It’s finally broken after a whole 6 months (toasts on one side only) so now I can look up reviews and get a much more reliable toaster.

Great service from SMEG after electrical fault – My husband bought me the large cream SMEG toaster a couple of Xmas's back to match the kettle he bought me the previous year. It has worked brilliantly the last couple of years and will toast anything of just about any size . My only criticism is it is a little too springy if you toast very light smaller items that can jump right out. Recently… Read more

my toaster blew up when I was pushing down the lever, tripping both the power point as well as the main safety switches, fortunately all newly installed last year. Unfortunately, the fright put my back out badly but is almost better 2 weeks later. I was going to just go buy a new toaster seeing as I had no receipt and the Warranty had expired. I found SMEG's customer service through this website, emailed them a picture of the toaster and serial number and what had happened and a brand new toaster was delivered to my door within three days! Thank-you SMEG for the great customer service. I didn't expect that great outcome.

Buyer Beware - Lasted only 3 months – Loved the look and design of this when we bought it from the Good Guys 2-3 months ago after our previous toaster died following about 3-4 years. We use normal bread and probably make toast about 5 times per week. Two days ago I noticed my son's toast was perfectly toasted on one side, and was uncooked bread on the other. The fact that this Smeg… Read more

toaster no longer works after such a short time is really a disgrace and I would not recommend this product at all. We will be seeking a refund today.

Elements are not all working – Not even a week and it will have to organise for the item to be replaced! The elements that heat and glow some dont work. And yes I have made sure the bagel button is off. So one side of the bread is toasted and the other is marginally done. I thought you get what you pay for, not in this case. I ordered a few more SMEG products to arrive, now I might just cancel due to these expensive products from SMEG only look good and that's about it. Show details

Best toaster ever – Love this toaster. Bought it to replace a breville we’d had for 20 years so we could get a more attractive toaster to match our smeg kettle and one that fit longer pieces of bread. It toasts evenly. Looks great and it’s Easy to operate. Love it. Show details

We cant live without this! – We use this toaster for sourdough, soy and linseed, crumpets and english muffins! With the defrost setting our toast comes out amazing! Easy settings to get the right amount of 'golden' on our toast. We haven't had any piece of bread get stuck or jammed - so awesome! Show details

A few days in and it is only toasting one side – I bought this last week as I loved the retro look that goes well in my period house..unfortunately it toasts unevenly; anything above 2 burns the bread, and the pop is so strong the toast get thrown on to the floor or cupboard - leaving lots of crumbs around the place to attract roaches.. It gets very very hot and is dangerous around children. I paid $200 for this and am bitterly disappointed.

Looks good but that's about it – While the toaster looks great, that's about it's only redeeming quality. The toaster worked for a few months (although the toast did always shoot out of the toaster onto the bench), but then the lever would not stay in the down position for long. Now it won't stay down at all and I have to manually hold it down if I want to toast anything. Very disappointed as I wanted a SMEG toaster for so long and it has performed so poorly.

Pretty good toaster – I use this toaster for my homemade sourdough, the long slots are perfect for non-standard bread sizes. The toaster works well, even toasting on both sides, though if I cut my bread a little thin or does tend to launch out of the toaster a bit. It's only made it to the bench once so far, but I can see some people wouldn't like that. The only… Read more

downside really is that there is no lift function for the finished toast, this hasn't been a problem for me really but if I had crumpets or something smaller I might have to go digging. Or they might fly clean out, perhaps this is a hidden functionality and not a fault!

update: set my toast on fire..twice – Update: This toaster is 4 years old and I took it back as it set my toast on fire twice now (even with regular cleaning, and not on the highest setting). It looks like the heating elements had warped so that they started touching the toast. For the price, this is really not acceptable. After much discussion with David Jones, they gave me a… Read more

replacement. I opened it up at home only to find that the closing mechanism doesn't work properly on one side of the toaster. I can only conclude that this product is riddled with problems, and would give it 0 stars if I could. Do not recommend.

This is a difficult one to review- I absolutely love the way this toaster looks. Is it the prettiest toaster on the market? Probably. But for close to $200 it should toast better! I bought this toaster and the matching kettle a couple of years back and boy do they look great in my kitchen. However, it wasn't long before I had to take them (both) back to David Jones to be replaced due to the lever not locking into place to push the bread down. I'm now on the second one and haven't had the same problem; however, it toasts pretty unevenly and varies a lot one day to the next. I'm usually toasting frozen bread- aldi sourdough or their protein bread and the results are highly variable. I like my bread pretty well down (to remove that awful freezer burn taste, usually on setting 4 or 5), but the bread will be toasted well on one side and barely at all on the other. It actually looks like the elements don't heat evenly on the inside when I push the bread down. My husband likes his toast blonde and doesn't seem too bothered by its toasting abilities as I am. I will say that bread almost never gets jammed (unless it's a really tiny piece) and it's relatively easy to clean with a removable crumb tray.

So would I purchase this toaster again? Probably, but only because it looks great and there's really nothing else that looks as good.

TL;DR: Do not recommend.

WASTE OF MONEY!! – I was brought both the kettle and toaster for my birthday, the toaster is 19 months old, so, no longer under warranty and it keeps tripping the safety switch. It’s only ever been lightly used and to be honest, it’s never been that great, sometimes it burnt the toast, sometimes it would not toast enough even though it was on exactly the same number… Read more

setting, I’ve owned $30 toasters that have performed much better and lasted longer. After reading the reviews, this seems to be a common fault, if only I researched beforehand, I would have steered well clear from this toaster. It certainly looks the part, but the quality is rubbish!!

Same issue with now two toasters – since original post Smeg have sent replacements for both the kettle amd toaster. toaster started shorting the power and only toasting on one side. HN replaced it no issues. the replacement was working fine up until 4 months ago when it started shorting the power and only toasting one side now it refuses to stay down or toast. our kettle know has the same problems others face with the lid button only working when it feels like it. we now fill it up by the spout. very disappointed with a normally great brand. the worst part is my sister brought the same toaster just after us because we recommended it.

kettle which is now starting to leak under the water level window , again we’ve had it under three years. As I said to Smeg Australia, I wonder if this would be happening if they were still Made in Italy. Smeg used to have a really good name and now you get inferior quality for the same high price. Simply replacing appliances just causes toxic landfill . They should be made to last at least 5 years .

Caught on fire! – This toaster was purchased less than a year ago, and from day one has always had issues. Firstly, it only toasts ONE side of the bread; meaning I have to manually flip it so it will toast evenly. That is not okay for such an expensive toaster. The final straw was today when I noticed something smelled like smoke/electrical fire in the kitchen.. I… Read more

run to the kitchen to find that the toaster was smoking and it looked as though the coil inside had caught flame. I quickly unplugged it and will definitely not be turning it back on. Another unhappy Smeg customer – This is such a great looking toaster but sadly that is now all that is good about it. I also loved the long toasting slots. Unfortunately after only 1 year and 8 months of using it no more than twice a week, the middle panel has now died and the outer panels barely toast the bread. Smeg, after paying $160 for a toaster to only last 20 months is really disappointing.  Show details

Worst toaster – I purchased the Smeg toaster presuming for the price it would toast perfectly. It has only ever toasted one side, you have to turn it around during toasting to get it even. I think for the price you would expect it to be perfect every time. I have bought cheaper brands before and have had more success.  Show details

Very short life span – We bought the 2-slice version and it lasted just over a year before the internal heaters stopped working. The new 4-slice bought in April 2017 stopped working after less than a month of use. While these toasters look fantastic, they are clearly not built to last. Particularly disappointing at their price point.  Show details

Terrible toaster - nothing but problems – This is the worst toaster we have ever had. You would think with a price tag of almost $200 it would be great but we have had nothing but problems. same setting and its burnt. Its a bit like a surprise really - you never know how the toast is going to come out even though you use the same setting. Another thing that has just occurred in the last couple of days is the cancel button doesn't do anything anymore - have to turn it off at the power point to get the toast to pop up when you want it to stop. Very disappointing.
