I'd like to give it negative stars – The Z5 Compact was my first Android phone after using a Nokia 830 Windows phone for the last 3 years. The Nokia was a great phone but Windows Phone 10 is nearly dead and there are no apps for it anymore. I decided it would be better to buy an older flagship Android device rather than a newer, cheap one. I was attracted to the small size of the… Read more

Z5 compact as I don't like the trend towards mega-sized phones.

The Z5 did have a couple of things going for it when it was working:

* a decent battery life that would see me easily through a day and a half * the Bluetooth paired instantly and reliably * enough power to smoothly run Android Nougat without any glitches at all

Unfortunately that's where any good stuff ended. Straight out of the box the phone could not power wired headphones. The volume was truly pathetic. The microSD slot had an intermittent contact problem and kept rejecting SD cards. This could be fixed by padding out the SD card with a layer of tape, but you shouldn't have to do this with a premium phone. The internet is full of similar accounts of this problem. Sony blamed the SD card. The camera app applied so much smoothing that the photos from the 23 MP camera lacked any detail at all. The other big issue is how incredibly hot the phone got after using it for a while.

About a month out of warranty things really started to head south. I attribute most of these failures to the cumulative effects of the heat stress inside the phone:

* first the adhesive around the top right of the screen melted and started to let go. Eventually the screen started to come away completely. * at the same time the screen adhesive failed the proximity sensor also failed. This meant the screen went black when making or receiving calls and rendered the phone almost useless since I couldn't hang up without rebooting * the microphone started cutting in and out and developed a dreadful echo on speakerphone * the screen itself developed small bright patches and a couple of dark patches down the right side edge * finally, the camera stopped working today too.

I can only agree with the other reviewer who described the Z5 as a fragile bar of soap. I've had the phone 14 months. It has had an easy life but is now completely useless. I'm thinking of smashing it to pieces with a hammer and sending it back to Sony. It would be worth the postage for some closure on this expensive piece of junk.

This is a very fragile phone – The performance of this phone is excellent for the price. I bought it because of the small size so that I could have it in a shirt pocket while working. However it fell out of my shirt pocket about 0.5 of a meter and a small crack about 1cm long in the top LH corner was the result. This immediately prevented the top half of the screen working. … Read more

I sent it off for repairs and bought a protective case. After about a week the screen started blanking out when I make a call. To get the screen back I have to double click the power key to activate the camera, then select Home, then "Phone", then "Use touch phone keypad", to be able to hang up or use the keypad. My previous Samsung had a crack down the middle of the screen, top to bottom. Also a crack accross from one side to the centreline crack. This had no impact on the Samsung performance at all. My opinion is that this phone is too fragile for use by an active person.

Okay but you need to keep resetting – The phone generally works well, not as good as my last phone (iPhone). Good size and lots of specs. But the microphone went on it early, so sometimes the phone just cuts in and out during a phone call. Bluetooth doesn't always work, you need to reset phone for it to work again.  Show details

Good little phone – Powerful little phone with amazing specs for its size. It provides everything I have needed in a small form factor which actually fits into your pocket. The operating system seems to be updated and supported pretty regularly which means that it will continue to feel new as time goes on.  Show details

The XPERIA is definitely NOT SUPERIOR! – Currently have an Xperia Z5 compact, camera is good quality, slow processor response time for every aspect of the phone including keyboard, calculator has no memory, pictures in album take a long time to buffer one photo (30-40 seconds) and then you have to wait another 20-30 when you scroll 3.photos to the right. Overall - crap phone with a user… Read more

friendly life span of 12months and a total life span of.... However long it takes you throw it away..... Or probably 2 years absolutely dead and completely inoperable.. Sony cheaped out with the design of this device.

Very problematic phone – Very problematic phone unfortunately. Does not worth the price tag. Super laggy and ryn really slow. I have hard reseted it three times, but unfortunately it still continues not working properly. I wish I have made a different choice. My previous phone was less than half price of this one and was much better.  Show details

Full features in a compact package – Purchased this for the compact design, which doesn't sacrifice features. The phone fits into my palm, is fast to operate and to charge. Phone is stylish and less reliant on Sony-unique apps (which tend to be clunky). I had initial concerns about the claimed waterproofing. Learnt the hard way that the previous model Z3 Compact waterproofing didn't deliver but the better design of the Z5 Compact (USB port moved) seems to be a winner.  Show details

Awesome phone – I wanted a top of the line smartphone and after reading online, found that this was the android equivalent of a Iphone 6. Having previously been an apple user, I really enjoyed the Xperia though I still believe IOS is the superior software. Only fault would be they're not that strong. I broke the screen on mine and it cost $200 to repair. Also battery life is one day, not two as advertised.  Show details

Great phone – I have never had a Sony and was always weary to steer away from a Samsung or HTC but this phone did not let me down at all! it has been excellent with no problems at all. Love all the apps Sony offer. Will look at getting the latest Sony again when the time comes.  Show details

Great phone in a small package – After using "large" mobile phones I thought I'd go for something a bit smaller. The reviews for the SONYZ25 Compact were excellent-and after using mine for nearly a year I'm glad I made the choice. The phone is easy to fit in a pocket-even with a case that can carry a PayWave card , a coffee loyalty card and a couple of business cards. The recent… Read more

upgrade has made many features which were good anyway , even better. These include LTE for improved voice calls. The standout feature for me has been the camera quality. A n added memory card can handle music and photos and there's plenty of room in the phone memory for as many apps as you think you need. (Which seem to be increasing all the time). And the battery? Superb. Even with many phone calls, listening to music , taking photos , checking emails at the end of a typical work day I'm only down to 70% or so.

Another masterpiece small phone from Sony – I purchased this phone box packed from someone who wanted to go back to Samsung. I was using a Samsung A5 and wanted to go back to Sony. I am glad I made the choice. I had used the Z3 Compact previously and while that was a little thing of beauty this is one is even better. The fingerprint sensor being in the most natural position helps unlike… Read more

other phones. It is excellent. If I have one small criticism it is that the right side of the phone is a little packed. The volume buttons could have easily on gone on the top left side of the handset. The camera button is fast and responsive.

Camera itself is obviously great and the longer you keep it on intelligent auto, the better pictures become. The batter life is excellent which is one of the main reasons I bought the phone. Again the use and charging patterns get better the more you use the phone. The display is excellent as well.

Everyday running is smooth and handles all the apps easily for the time being. However only having 2GB RAM I have worried if it might struggle if I try running too many apps. I like the design and the frosted glass at the back better as well than the Z3. Z3 was a fingerprint magnet.

And the cherry on the top for me. The sound. Sony has brought its high-quality sound processor to the party and it works wonders. I have a few different headphones and every time I plug a different one in, it optimises the sound. I also have a HK Onyx 3 and the combination of the two is insane.

Love it Sony. Keep doing what you are doing.

Amazing phone, Compact and powerful – I used this phone to take underwater video, comes out crystal clear. Not much difference between the Z3 and Z5 compact but either way the 23 mega pixel camera, amazing speed and small enough for those who don't like the huge screens. Waiting for the Z7 compact to come out later this year hopefully as good.  Show details

Its great, but – I purchased this phone little over a year ago from an online store named expansys.I was purchasing from this store as it had the cheapest price for both the handset and the shipping. It arrived a couple Days late but that was fine. I was keen to get started with the handset. Setup was very easy as both my previous phones where Sony branded and I… Read more

was excited for the new fingerprint scanner, which is conveniently on the right hand side of the phone. So far it runs great, I can multitask with several applications, its very responsive, the camera is very fast and a good quality, not the most amazing but still above par. However, viewing images in the "photos" app greatly increased the rendered quality of the images compared to the "albums" app, which I suspect compresses them. Most of the preloaded Sony apps are very good, for example the music and track id apps. The few bloatware apps (there were about 4 I didn't want) can easily be uninstalled. The phone is kept up to date by Sony, with regular software and firmware updates. The only issue I had, which is still a really annoying issue, is overheating. At the start, the phone would become incredibly hot after minimal usage. Other times it would become hot by itself. And other times it goes through days of being very hot and then a period of being cool and perfect. This problem is still with me sometimes, as it sits in my pocket it can become warm and after watching a few videos can make it hot. After talking to the Sony support centre and doing my own online research, I have found out that the main possible cause for my phone issues is a battery issue. The first batch of this handset that was shipped had a fault in the battery. Unfortunately the site I bought it from wouldn't reply, but you get what you pay for, and I bought it for a cheaper price. The waterproof of the phone is great too. It isn't meant to be dunked in water, but it does let it be washed under water, or left undamaged if you're caught in the rain, even good for cooling the phone down when it overheats. The battery life was fantastic for a long time when I first got the phone, easily lasting two whole days before a charge, but it has slightly decreased, with no help from the overheating faulty battery. All in all a great phone (except for the overheating) and a great size too, being the compact edition, fits in one hand very well.

Excellence in a reasonable size phone – Great Battery life, fab camera, easy to use I love this phone! Runs all the apps I need, has great reception in the country (blue tick from Telstra too) and seems tough I have dropped it several times and it doesn't miss a beat The best phone I have owned yet June 26th 2018 Update: Fabulous Quality Phone I brought this phone to replace… Read more

another Sony experia product. It was not too big and had the best camera on the market, 23mega pixel. I has serviced me very well over the past few years.

Easy to use and certainly lives up to its waterproof claims - worked perfectly after an unscheduled swim in the dam

Best phone on the market – Best smartest little phone i've ever owned. I love everything about it, especially that it turns itself to do not disturb (aka silent mode- with exceptions i set) between the hours that i tell it to and on the days i tell it to. It saves me worrying about being woken up at night or during they days when i'm on night shifts. Battery power is… Read more

vastly superior to any phone i've ever used. Mine goes at least a week between charging.

Its small enough to fit in my average size womans hand but still big enough to watch netflix on or play games etc. Screen is excellent quality, not a single flaw there. While watching netflix i can see the pores on actors' faces! Not something i can see even on my home tv!

Never had any issues other than the camera which keeps failing when i try to take video and pictures at the same time, but i have since spoken to Sony about that and they have given me the directions to fix the issue.

Calls are crisp and clear as is the functionality between apps and general usage of the phone. It never laggs, never crashes and has never stopped working for any reason, even in 40C heat.

Water resistance helps a lot as i often use it while out walking my dogs in light rain.

Small enough to fit in your pocket which is a MASSIVE deal to me as girls don't get big pockets on pants like men do. But not as small as old iphones or old smartphones used to be which made seeing the screen hard when doing detailed work.

Very easily tweaked, super intuitive in it's layout. (you don't have to go through tons of folders and options to find stuff) and super easy to add stuff to it like music, wallapers etc.

All round awesome phone, very very happy with it. Will definitely be sticking to these phones from now on. Hubby has had his Z2 for 3 yrs and it's going as strong as the day he got it!

The ONLY thing i dislike about this is that i was forced to get it from Telstra as where i live they are the only service provider...But that's not a fault in the phone, moreso just that i know i am getting ripped off in the plan lol. If you can get this phone on ebay or elsewhere i highly advise you to do so. Just make sure its covered by Australian Warranty and you'll be set. Sony are fantastic with all customer service.

Overachiever, tough little phone! – Had my phone now for a good year now and i must say it's a tough little phone runs apps no problems doesn't over heat battery last's for a good day and half at 70% use rate I'm a tradesman dropped the phone handful of times and it's still working fine. Slow, screen problems – I have used and owned all z series, this is the slowest, also glitches daily. It has frozen multiple times and turns itself off randomly. Emailed Sony with no response. You have finally converted me to iPhone. No insurance so I'm down $700 Thank you Sony. From long time user

This is the perfect phone – Size, functions, style, and weight are all perfect. Screen is great and I would buy another one of these if I lost it. The earphones that come with it are very good, phone calls perfectly clear even with the speaker turned up on full. Hopefully it lasts a long time.

Awesome phone! – I have had an iPhone, a Nexus and other phones not worth mentioning. I love this phone. Being a compact size, its great as I can fit it into typical womens purses (read: small, smaller than the Nexus 5), while it still had a comfortably large screen. It is an incredibly fast phone. This is where it gets good, water resistant. For someone like me,… Read more

it is pretty important. Camera is great. Battery life is decent as well. The only negative things I can say about it, which is really not such a big deal but a personal preference, I usually prefer more rounded edges. The fingerprint recognition also doesn't work too well to unlock it, at least for me, but given that I have never used that technology before, I can't compare it to anything else.

Overall I think its a great phone. Worth every cent!

The best mobile I have owned – I love everything about this phone, it's reception ,it's battery life, it's tough build and it's camera. I have had no issue with space, 12 GB is pretty impressive for a phone and I'm not having any problems with it filling up, I only use the SD card for photos. I would definitely reccommend it to anyone who wants a compact Android mobile.

I'l never use anything else – The Sony Z5 Compact is far superior to any mobile I've ever used (Samsung, Microsoft-owned Nokia and Blackberry). The battery life is astounding to me but will depend on how many apps you like to use and how often you use them. I watch streaming videos, play mp4's, surf the net and the Google Play Store and it's usually 4-5 days before the… Read more

battery is low enough to warrant a recharge.

No other phone on the market gives me that kind of battery power.

As far as it having "too many apps" as someone else mentioned, it's so easy to remove apps that you don't want. You're certainly not forced to keep them all, but isn't it nice to have choices for a change?

Being a petite woman, the size of the Z5 Compact is perfect for my hands and the ear pieces fit beautifully - I love the gel-like material over them that gives them excellent 'grip' - they never fall out and many times I've fallen asleep with them in.

I love the Sony Z5 Compact and as long as Sony stay true to it and don't make silly changes, I will never use any other mobile on the market.

Great Phone too many apps – Really happy with this phone, camera is great sound and picture really good. unfortunately too little built in memory, constantly moving things to the sd card. Has heaps of apps you can't remove to free up space and I don't use them. The torch function isn't as bright as on my previous phones
