Sunbeam Designer Series Glass KE9400

Lid is faulty – The rubber/ plastic type seal decays over time with the heat. As such the lid falls off the unit when trying to pour resulting in a painful steam burn. It is clear than not enough product testing was done prior to release as the material used for the lid seal will not withstand the heat from the steam. Show details
Perfect! – I've been reading everyone elses reviews of this kettle and so many people have reported trouble with the sensor button failing, well they must have got the duds... Ive had mine for about four years and its still going strong and still looks great! I always have guests commenting on it and asking where i got it. 100% happy with this kettle and hope mine continues to function as well as it has so far... Show reply
Sunbeam Model KE 6450 unsafe to use – Model KE 6450 unsafe to use after one year almost to the day, used only for normal household needs. Will not click off when boils so water goes everywhere , lid will not open and is cracked very disappointed as I have always purchased sunbeam products. will have to look at cheaper one now .

Sunbeam have listened and fixed the faults! – We bought this model 2 years ago when we renovated our kitchen and a month ago the sensor failed, with all the faults that have been listed we didn't disagree that it was not a good buy, the lid was never designed to stay on, the base went brown quite quickly and needed constant cleaning with vinegar, it didn't pour well and when the sensor… Read more
finally gave up we had to keep pressing it 6 times to get it to boil!!! However, we loved the look of the kettle so much, after we read all these reviews we felt that Sunbeam had to have made changes, otherwise they would never sell another one, as it isn't cheap. So we bit the bullet and bought another one....... a little scared we opened the box and discovered that they have redesigned the lid so that it clicks into a lug and stays on, the handle stays cold, the pouring area has been given a spout so that it pours well and we just hope that the sensor will last longer than the previous model. We have used it for 6 weeks now, no brown base and just wanted to place a positive review for this product. Love the design, smaller sizer so takes up less room on the kitchen bench, love seeing the water boil! Nothing yet!!
Love my kettle – We have had our Sunbeam kettle for quite some time now and it has been nothing but a pleasure. Easy to use, quiet and quick. Looks great. The lid is getting a bit worn out now but it has had a huge amount of use. Love the shape and style of this particular Kettle and am looking around to see if I can replace it with the same (best kettle, and best looking kettle) we have ever had. Finding it hard to find another Everything, worth the cost Show reply
Benchtop Favourite – We ve had this kettle for a few months now, completely obsessed with it looks great never get impatient waiting for it to boil watching it bubble away. After having countless kettles over the the years we re in our fifties' we seem to have bought a few bombs in recent times but this one apart from being a little quirky ticks all the boxes for us… Read more
; good looks, quiet operation, energy efficient, quick boil and no nasty plastic taste. Quality kettle, cost a little more but not over the top, good value product. Rust spots starting to appear on base of kettle despite regular cleaning with white vinegar. Beeper sound less audible than before.
Negative reviews
Sunbeam no longer a quality product – Our Sunbeam KE9400 electric kettle has ceased to turn on after less than 2 years light use. This is the third Sunbeam appliance we have experienced failures with within 2 years of purchase. One kettle was so bad that it failed after only a few months. Needless to say we will not be buying another Sunbeam appliance. Calling the service number is of no use either as they are of no assistance.

Disgusting – The kettle was fine however it stopped working just shy of 2 years. Disgusting. Next time will just buy a cheap one from Aldi!!! Thought to buy a better one, classy looking product but what's the point if the product gives up the ghost after a short time. Will never buy a Sunbeam kettle or any other product for that matter.
Very dissapointing – Loved the look of this glass kettle and had to have it. Unfortunately the sensors started to play up within several months of purchase and totally ceased to work soon after. Disheartened I pulled out my old and ugly (but still working) kettle. I'm now in search for a new one and realised by reading the reviews that my Sunbean Designer Series Glass kettle was not the only dud. It has really turned me off from buying Sunbeam appliances again.

Dont waste your money on this kettle. Just outside of warrenty and the sensor has failed – While we loved the look of this expensive kettle it has been disappointing. Firstly, water spits everywhere when you pour water into a cup. While this can be avoided by being very slow and careful when filling a cup, it should be addressed by Sunbeam as you can burn your hand. Secondly, the sensor has given out 13months after purchade. We have… Read more
to press the on button 6+ times to boil the water. Very fustrating. I hate waste so I purchased a 'good quality' kettle that would last. Fool me, what a waste of money and resources which are now bound for landfill.
Why do I have to give it even one star? – Doesn't pour, lid doesn't fit easily, switch is broken and its an expensive kettle (well it's an expensive jug now). A kettle that costs this much should last for many years. With all the bad feedback this product should be recalled by Sunbeam or is the cost/benefit analysis saying ignore a bunch of angry consumers who will badmouth Sunbeam for the rest of their lives? Very unethical Sunbeam.
Beautiful, but breaks – So... yet another story mirroring that of everyone here. I love the look of this kettle, and it has been great up until today when the sensor failed. I've had this kettle for about 3 years, so it did a bit better for me than the majority of reviewers, but still... very disappointed it has only lasted 3 years. I thought I was buying a… Read more
high-quality product, and the reason I paid so much was that this was the kettle I wanted for at least the next ten years.
Ordinarily I'd go out and buy the same one again, but judging from these reviews, it looks like it isn't worth it. What a shame. Beautiful kettles are not easy to find.
Pours terrible – I have had my kettle over a year now, and it still works fine, but it pours terrible, from the day i got it, it just spits everywhere, have burnt myself a few times already. I dont let the kids make their own drinks because of it. Ive had a few coments on how nice it looks but ive always said to everyone not to buy it cause of its pouring. I always have a wet bench top after a cuppa.

Great looks - But worst switch you will find on ANY kettle! Built to only last 7-12 months – Do not buy these kettles!!!! I have had two of them that failed and I will never buy another Sunbeam kettle again Like others, I bought this kettles because the styling was unique and tasteful, and at $160-$180 it was at the upper end of the kettle price range, Sadly after 10 months on my first unit the touch switch malfunctioned and… Read more
Sunbeam replaced it under warranty. Got new kettle of same type and the next kettle's touch switch lasted only 7 months, when I went back to Sunbeam they said it was out of warrantly even though the fault was the same as the first! and offered to let me buy another one!
As we liked the style we even tried getting an appliance repairer to fix the switch, they said it is a sealed unit and you cannot repair the switch only replace the whole base...!
While these look great they are clearly faulty or are built to fail at the end of the warranty period. At $160-$180 they should last longer than 7-10 months
I will never buy another Sunbeam kettle and/ or product again
Great kettle let down by poor quality components – Like many of the other owners here, ours stopped working after around 13 months of use. The kettle would stop heating after a few seconds and switch off. After doing some reading and opening up the kettle for a look, it turned out that two capacitors are prone to failing. These are very common parts available from most electronics stores and… Read more
only cost $1-2 each. However as they are connected to mains voltage, they can only be replaced by a qualified repair person. For the small cost compared to a new kettle, i think it's definitely worth having it fixed - even if it's just so Sunbeam or Breville don't get more of your money for unit of planned obsolescence. Looks great, amazes friends and family. Let down by poor quality components (deliberate?)
Same experience – I was searching for a trouble-shooting guide for this kettle when I came across these reviews. I also purchased this for its distinct look and it worked well for 2 years and now the auto on/off switch has failed (like most of the previous reviews). I'm off to purchase a competetor brand now Sunbeam! Glass/looks Useless after auto switch fails
Don't buy this kettle – It's sad to say, but our experience is just like many others with this kettle. It looks great, and worked really well, but the button stopped working a month after the 12 month warranty expired, so now it's completely useless. I would be less concerned if it wasn't such an expensive kettle. Looks great Stopped working just after warranty expired
Since I wrote this review, Sunbeam replaced our kettle, which was great. The new one is going fine so far.
Useless product, terrible customer service – Stopped working after 18 months. I contacted Sunbeam and spoke with a "customer service" representative, who confirmed this product cannot be repaired as it comes in one piece, (isn't it slightly useless therefore to provide repair centre details with the product?) Was advised if proof of purchase (give or take a few days out of the 12 mths) can… Read more
be provided, they "may" be able to offer a 30% discount on another sunbeam product. So essentially I'm given the "privilege" of paying them 70% of the purchase price, just to buy another faulty, unreliable product. Ah, no thanks. As it was a gift, I don't have the receipt, not that it would help by the sounds of it.
Clearly based on the many reviews, this is an unreliable product, and should be removed from shelves if it cannot survive past the basic warranty period. The customer service rep who I spoke to was defensive, unhelpful and at some points rude and sarcastic, making comments like "well if we extend the warranty, we may as well just give products away for free". I was appalled, as I cant remember ever receiving such arrogant service from such a large company before. I was shocked at the lack of sincerity or interest at hearing my complaint.
Sunbeam, aside from maybe trying to improve the quality of your products, you really need to train your staff to actually care a little about the customers they are serving. Will not be buying another Sunbeam product. Will be sharing my disgust on social media, with friends, family etc and if I can will take it further.
Awful customer service, useless warranty, will never buy Sunbeam again.
only lasts a year – Loved the product but then it broke unfortunately only lasted a year. The kettle would only boil to luke warm and then the on/off switch failed. Called the service centre was told out of warranty unable to help and could be due to not cleaning the kettle? Not very happy looks great works well for 1 year. only lasts 1 year.
2 Failures in 2 Years – Reflecting the experience of many of the reviewers here, the sensor button died within 12mths just as the warranty expires. It is in-built obsolescence but what it has going for it are its good looks. My husband (against my wishes) has persisted in replacing the broken kettles with the same model each year, because he likes how it looks. … Read more
We are now on to our 3rd Sunbeam KE 9400 Designer Glass kettle and I can bet that it will not last past 12mths.
I emailed Sunbeam to report what is a well-reported defect but have had no response at the time of this review. Looks modern and slick. Sensor dies within 12mths just as the warranty expires.
Broke after 360 days – Just like everybody else, the sensor (on/off switch) broke after 360 days. Sunbeam - if you think the planned obsolesence built into this product is clever, think again. I will never buy another Sunbeam product ever again. It is also the worst pouring kettle i have come across. A classic example of form triumphing over function. Looks good Broke after 360days, difficult to pour, difficult to attach lid
What a dud! – Like Deborah, I received this kettle as a gift (so I don't have receipt) just 13 months ago. Similar to the experience of many other reviewers, the sensor went and when I rang Sunbeam to find out about repairs, I was told it was irreparable. Talk about an extreme case of built in obsolescence! Sunbeam have a very polite standard response to… Read more
emails, but clearly, they won't accept any responsibility or liability. The kettle looks very smart, but its sensor mechanism is clearly flawed.

Worst product of the Year – I was given one of these kettles less than 12 months ago and initially loved it. Up until last month it worked then the sensor went and you have to stand there and keep turning it on so it finishes boiling. I soon learned to hate it. I decided to ring Sunbeam as per advice on here and was told it could not be replaced without a receipt. As it was… Read more
a gift I don't have a receipt. I asked to speak to a team leader, again as per advice online. I was not afforded this opportunity. I was basically told, sorry nothing we can do. I continued to complain further so he offered me a 30% discount on a new kettle. It wasn't my choice as this kettle should still be working perfectly but was not given any assistance so said I would take the discount voucher on offer. I gave my email address and to date have received nothing, as per what I expected. This is totally unacceptable and at the very least this product should be recalled and should definitely not display a sticker claiming it as a product of the year. I am disgusted with Sunbeam on the whole. Very bad customer service . It's sad I have to now use a $10 kettle that has been operating perfectly for a number of years. Shame on you Sunbeam for not supporting a on e lifelong customer. Look Sensor stops working
Looks good but spills water – Purchased this kettle from Myers just over a year and a half ago. Still looks good and works fine (even the sensors). The only issue is the water drops/spills after pouring. Overall its acceptable, however I would say that the money paid for it mostly goes to its modern look.

Doesn't last long – I bought this kettle for my chemical-sensitive daughter. We only use filtered water in it. It has always been a bit tricky to fill, and very slow to boil. It started playing up a few days ago, switching itself off before it had finished boiling, and yesterday it died completely. It lasted about 14 months all up, not nearly as long as much… Read more
cheaper kettles so I am quite unimpressed.
If you buy one, don't count on it outlasting the warranty period by much. Made of glass and metal (on the inside) - potentially lower toxicity than plastic kettles. Awkward to fill. Very slow to boil. Will dies about a year after you get it, based on my experience and of others.

Not happy – I was given a Sunbeam KE9400 glass kettle by my daughter. It lasted about 6 months the switch started to play up. My daughter took it back to Myer and we got a replacement. Now the replacement is doing the same thing but it is now just outside the warranty period. I find it very hard to believe that this kettle won a designer award as it also spills water everywhere when you pour.
Hi Julie, we are truly sorry to hear of this issue. Could… Read more
Won't buy again – We bought one,but it stops working after 6 months.so we get replaced.we bought another one when we moved from mel to cairns because we like glass ones. But it stops working just after13 months. So we can't get it replaced. I think it's not that we are not lucky.it's this kettle designed for people who rarely use their kettle. Glass design The sensor switch stops working.

Good idea but – The kettle looks great when it is new but after a short amount of time the silver base plate will turn an ugly brown/black colour. However, this is not the most serious issue. As per many of the other reviews below, the sensor on our kettle started to malfunction before ceasing to work at all. Our kettle is slightly older than 1 year so… Read more
outside the warranty period. This is frustrating given the relatively high cost.
You have been warned. Looked good at the beginning. Worked well at the beginning. Very short lifespan.
Hi jsanderson, could you please contact our Consumer Support Team on 1300 881 761 to discuss further.
Rubbish - how did it pass User Acceptance testing? – I find it hard to believe people haven't commented on how this kettle actually pours boiling water. We've had lots of kettles over the years but NONE have ever had the issue of water spilling out of the pouring spout onto the bench top every time it's poured. If you boil the water, remove it immediately to pour into a cup, the boiling water… Read more
comes "blobbing" out of the spout and all over the place. That's the worst part. When you simply wait for it to settle, then pour, then attempt to set it upright, the water comes out of the spout again and onto the bench, into the cup and onto you! Don't let kids at bench level use this thing they'll get water in their eyes!
We have to let it settle, pour gently and sit it upright slowly. Who wants that?
No issue (yet) with sensor as a lot of other people have found.
Will probably throw this away as I wouldn't give it to anyone or use it elsewhere. Stylish look, clean lines. Design for pouring water is woeful. Cheap materials, I have cups heavier than this.

Stay Away from this product – We bought this product just over 12 x months ago. It was working fine until a couple of weeks ago I noticed the beeps that notify you when it has boiled had stopped. It then went down hill from there. The sensor button to start/stop it had to be held down until it completely boiled. I honestly think there is a common fault with this product by… Read more
reading previous reviews with similar faults. I followed maintenance guide on keeping it clean with vinegar and was more than careful on maintaining it. For a $130 I think this product is a complete rip off. I have now put back in its place the old stainless steel Philips kettle I have had for over 15 x years back in my kitchen. The only reason we replaced it with the Sunbeam was we had a new kitchen installed. Also note the repair dealers who work on behalf of Sunbeam suggest throwing away the kettle as it is not worth touching it as the labour out weighs the cost of repairing( Great for the environment). I couldn't find my receipt and a complaint to Sunbeam fell on deaf ears unless you have a proof of purchase. I would of hoped a company such as Sunbeam would be more sustainable in their productivity with manufacturing products that last more than 12 x months. Shame on them.
Electronics are cheap and fail.

Sensor doesn't work anymore!!! – We were very happy with this kettle as it was nice and quiet and quick to boil plus looks great but all of a sudden the sensor to turn it on has stopped working!! Only 5 months old and I'm not very happy as my mum bought this as a gift for me and spent over $100 on it. And of course sunbeam are closed when I tried calling them this afternoon even though it was before 5pm. Angry!!!

Fail product – Worked OK or a year, then the electronic sensor developed a fault, and needs to be pressed repeatedly (6 or 8 times) to bring the kettle to boil - not very handy, because it means you need to stand next to it throughout. Nice to look at, but don't buy one! Looks nice It doesn't work.

Can't be fixed – Bought a Ke9400 2 years ago. It doesn't get used a lot but would not work one morning. I contacted Sunbeam who gave be a contact in Brunswick, I contacted them to be told the kettle cannot be fixed. I then rang Sunbeam back and had it confirmed that these kettles cannot be repaired. I think this is very poor support considering the price of the kettle. The old Sunbeam kettle is back out of retirememt! Looks nice Dosen't work
Beautiful kettle stopped working after 8months – This is a fabulous looking kettle. It is a talking point when friends & family come over & see the water boil, love it. I have been very happy with it until this morning. The unit has stopped working completely. This is a faulty unit and certainly shouldn't happen with a kettle after 8 months for the price I paid too. I take good care of it and clean it as per manufacturers instructions. I hope I still have my warranty card. Sigh.
Looks great but stopped working after 3 boils – We loved the look of this kettle but after 3 boils it stopped working. Seems to be a pretty common problem reading the reviews on this website. We had purchased the kettle a few months earlier and only started using it when we moved into our new place. Unfortunately we lost the receipt in the move. Looks great Stopped working in less than a day
