Super Start Batteries SSB Powersport Lithium Batteries CONTAIN ‘POUCH CELLS’, NOT ‘PRISMATIC CELLS” AS ADVERTISED. Super Start Batteries make a big deal on their website about how SSB Powersport Lithium batteries use "PRISMATIC cells" whereas "other brands generally use cylindrical cells, owing to their lower manufacturing costs, their batteries… Read more
are inferior". So a few years ago, after having extensively researched my options, I bought one of these for my motorcycle for about $200 (double the cost of the tried and proven AGM batteries I'd always used).
Recently I discovered that despite very limited cycles and near ideal storage conditions, it died for no apparent reason. I found the top of the plastic case partially detached and upon opening it up I was shocked and extremely disappointed to find inferior POUCH cells...at least one of which had swelled so much it caused the mechanical failure of the plastic case.
They would no doubt point to one of a handful of obscure references claiming that technically, a pouch cell may be considered a type of prismatic cell. In practice however, and more importantly, in the mind of consumers, they are two very different products.
For a company who says it has "been researching, testing and using lithium batteries for over 5 years", it is difficult to believe this was anything other than a deliberate deception. They clearly must have known that pouch cells is not what consumers thought they were buying when they advertised them as "prismatic cells".
Like very many other people, I bought the battery believing I was getting the superior prismatic cells they advertised, not cheap and nasty pouch cells, soldered together and half potted in some silicon like material. Had I known this, there is no way I would have purchased their product. I am embarrassed to say that I recommended these batteries to a number of close friends & family, a mistake I will try to offset by letting as many people as possible know about your deceptive advertising.
Poor Quality – Expensive lithium poor performer battery , I have been through about 4 of there expensive High Performance Lithium motorbike batteries . They say " the battery can sit for over a year without losing charge " but then when it does lose its charge they will not replace under warranty when its dead within 2 year period .
SSB VTX9-BS absolute rubbish – 2 batteries for my motorcycle in less than 3 years these SSB VTX9-BS The nonsense stands for Bull ........ They're nothing but rubbish in my opinion they test at 12.4V but quickly reduce to mess with all the electronics on the bike throwing codes etc. and seem to charge up fine testing up to 13V then hardly enough voltage to activate the fuel… Read more
pump or starter relay I had bought the 2nd battery for another bike not realising that it was the same brand as the OEM Battery my Suzuki sport bike battery is still going strong 10 years and counting.
Service well beyond expectations – Bought an SSB Lithium motorcycle battery from an online store. After about 9 months had a BMS shutdown issue (I think) with it. The online store was little help. After contacting SSB just to get some technical info and advice, they followed up by sending me a replacement battery! I had to send my old one back to them at my cost, but otherwise,… Read more

real people and phone access- so often void with large businesses. Personalised and fast feedback. Wide range of products for different applications to suit individual needs.
scam company, no way to contact them at all – scam company, no way to contact them at all not answering emails, phones, i doubt that they are even trading nowadays
Utter garbage do not waste your money on this cheap crap – Absolute garbage didn’t last 6 months cost double of most other batteries
Extremely Painful – This guys are extremely painful to deal with when it comes to warranty... Product is still under warranty and failed after one year. I suggest it is better to buy from Repco or super cheap as they can honor the warranty.
Don't Honour The 36 Months Warranty – Bought a battery with 36 months warranty, after driving to super start batteries Lansvale the battery was taken out of my car and tested the company representative stated the battery wasn't performing to what it should and it was only 14 months old I produced proof of purchase as requested by the owner [Name Removed] ,then they asked for my card… Read more
details to send the refund I supplied 2 days later I received a phone call from the company representative telling me someone would be contacting myself later today to do the refund. I'm still waiting 2 weeks later. Now I'll be pursuing the matter with the ACCC. My advice is run as fast as you can from the company !
No Custumer service whatsoever. Battery died before warranty and they could not care less – I rang Super start batteries and spoke to a staff member and i told them I had to call NRMA as battery was faulty. He said bring the battery in and they would test and if faulty then they would replace. I got there and they tested the battery and said yes it’s faulty and I would have to pay for a new one. Battery is clearly stamped built date… Read more
May 2019. This battery has a 3 year warranty. Staff were rude and would not assist. I have reported to Dept of Fair Trading.

Tucked away in Lansvale – Needed a new battery for my 2005 Kia Carnival so I tried NRMA, then eBay, then Google......prices were decreasing with each search, and each time it was a different battery make and spec. ....Can be confusing, and we all know we "normally get what you pay for". I'm a bit of a mechanic, and have changed car batteries many times, so NRMA was too… Read more
costly ($320 or $260 for members). EBay threw up many options ranging from Hyundai to local branded batteries, with the former being very well priced at $145 for the US model Carnival with a 3.8lt V6. So I rang Super Start batteries and asked if it was suitable for my 2.5lt V6. Instead, they offered their own branded SSB Expanded Grid Automotive ES55D23L at $126 pick up. Now I know this battery has a lower CCA rating (570 CCA and 60Ah), than the others I looked at, but a suitable battery, at the lowest cost (without going lead acid old school) was my criteria. This fit the bill perfectly. I fitted it in 15 minutes, and the car started immediately. Couldn't be happier! This battery replaced my old SSB 50PL which was rated at 600CCA, but only 50Ah. The guys at SSB were great, despite being quite busy. Quick and efficient. These "Calcium-Calcium" batteries are fantastic, lasting me over 7 years easily. Thanks SSB.
blowing their own horn, but a very poor product and slippery as an eel at warranty – It seems that the more a company toots their own horn, and bags others ... as this one does on its site with their "prismatic" spiel, bagging the competition... the more likely they are to be a slippery fish when it come to integrity of warranty. I used their battery for 6 months. It failed badly and left me stranded. Luckily I had an old spare… Read more
on board. I took it home and tested the SSB one. Sure enough, the capacity was VERY low and it completely collapsed at 12.5 volt (!!!), causing weird erratic total zero-volt shutdowns. I spent an hour or two testing it, so the warranty email would have information for them.
When I contacted them... it was... "take it back to the supplier" (not going to happen on ebay after 6 months as they well know, as i sent them the receipt)... or "bring it in to us" (only 5,000km)... we will test it. The shutdowns were "because lithium does this" (???) . We will "test" it for "free", but the warranty is not applicable as you did not use in the exact way we want you to. The bike/"car" is a tiny three wheeler , way smaller than most motorbikes with a 2 stroke engine. Any excuse to get rid of an obviously defective-product claim..
In other words, "our 12/24 month warranty, that we make so much noise about slamming the competition, is not going to be upheld".
As I'm sure they know, I am not going to get into some cost-spiral of sending it by courier and fighting over it. Into the bin with it. Complete waste of money $200 lost. The old cheapie that saved me by the road was 7 years old and still saved me and got me home. So much for all their marketing nonsense.
No integrity. So, don't buy from them. When the product fails, they will ditch you quicksmart. I hope my review saves a few people.
Note they are operating under a few names... another clue as to the reliability of the product.
