This 12" ported subwoofer is one of the smaller one from the SVS range for AU$1570 , however with the over 300W RMS amplifier, 17Hz low extension (-3dB) and the app configurability, get ready for sound that you normally only experience when you go to an actual cinema. The SVS smartphone app lets you adjust a number of settings which you don't… Read more
normally get with subs from the listening position. Equalizer, room correction, phase, polarity, presets, volume etc... which help you tune the SVS to the room acoustics and personal preferences. Bring the room alive make it breathe and be blown away.
I had my fair share of subwoofers in my lifetime. For comparison the latest was an older 12" Polk Audio. While the Polk Audio most certainly packs a punch and you will feel explosions, it just doesn't have the low frequency extension to give you the true cinematic experience. Having said that, if you look at current subwoofers at the around AU$1500-2500 price most of them go down to only 28-25 Hz. And when you talk about frequencies around 20Hz, every Hz makes a big difference in the listener experience. Listening to Cincinatti Pops Orchestra, Back to the future soundtrack, Hans Zimmer, Interstellar, STAY track for example highlights the capability of this SVS Sub. SVS originally made only and specialized in subwoofers. So if in the past you only had your typical Sony, Yamaha, Sonos, Bose, KEF, etc... subwoofers try the SVS and be amazed. When I did the frequency sweep test, the SVS was audible from 16Hz. At the same volume the Polk Audio was audible from 25 Hz. That's the difference between room shaking and room breathing bass.
There are actually two other brands I'm aware of that deliver similar performance in the price range, the slightly smaller 10" but more expensive Klipsch RP-1000 which I compared myself, and the Tonewinner SW-1000 which is also 12", slightly cheaper but reading the reviews, support seems to be patchy.
It's also worth to note that on the other hand SVS provides outsanding support all the way from the manufacturer in the US through the importer in Australia (Interdyn Brands) and the biggest retailer West Coast Hifi. As I found out communication is great between the links of the supply chain.
