I have a 2007 Toyota Avensis Verso with auto transmission that has OD. Recently when I’m driving in reverse the car kangaroo jumps. I took it to have a service and them diagnose the issue but they said they could not find a reason or a problem. So I took them for a test drive and while reversing it up an incline it was jumping like a jolting motion. We returned to the shop and they had the car for a day and their diagnostic report said the ‘Sprag’ is catching and needs replaced and the total cost will cost $3000 due to them having to completely pull the transmission apart to get to the area for the new part. Obviously labour is playing a large part with price quote. Any thoughts? Ros

Hi Safa, I keep answering this question again and again. :) the problem is not with your gearbox. My car had the same issues and it turned out to be a global problem affecting multiple cars. The cause is actually the ECU (computer) which is allegedly faulty from new. This creates the gearbox issues you're encountering. Call or email Injectronics in Victoria. They repaired my ECU and the car was back on the road within a week. My car now has 440K on the clock and still runs like a dream.

I have a 2006 Toyota Avensis Verso. I've had issues with the car with harsh shifting. At one stage when I went around a roundabout the car would just stop - the brakes would be automatically slammed on. Damn dangerous. I first took the computer to someone who did some work on it, but the issue remained. I took it to Toyota and they said the ABS module needed replacement for $6k! I said forget that. I took it to an Auto Transmission shop and they had the computer reconditioned. There is no issue going around roundabouts and it is much better but if I'm in lots of start stop traffic the car is very rough changing gears. Like a Train Shunting. It just usually happens from time to time in stop start traffic. Never an issue if you take off from the lights and just cruise. Just when you have to start and stop alot in a short time. Any help welcome. I did read maybe the auto direct clutch assembly needs replacement but if that was the issue wouldn't it be an issue all the time?? Thanks for any help

Hi, I am in Canberra Australia and i own a Toyota Advensis 2002, 2.0L engine model and only done like a little over 98000k Kms. I have this problem last friday, my gearbox seems to not working properly, it delay for changing during drive and when it change gear you can feel like someone gently gives the back bumper a little bump and car sort of jerk a little bit. What would be the problem? Anyone can help will really appreciate and thank you in advance.

Tionee

You have transmission problem. Can be fixed for around 1k or just a little over

Serge V

This is likely to be the ECU causing transmission faults. Been there, done that. Don't waste your money 'repairing' the gearbox if that's the case as nothing will change. Mind you, gearboxes do break down too so no guarantees either way.

I have a 7 seater Toyota Verso 2005 model. I tried several times to start up but cannot start. It only starts on Jump start. Got brand new battery and checked alternator was good as well. Sometimes the engine cuts off by itself when I stop on stop signs or give way signs. Can anyone help me what the cause is..Thanks

Hi got a problem with my Toyota ipsum 2.4i 2001 gearbox its no longer engages reverse gear other gears don't change normally or rather delay what would be the problem?

Serge V

Howdy, track down my review and read the entire post. If the same as our car, it'll be the ECU which was allegedly defective off the production line. Not great but loads cheaper than rebuilding the gearbox, something mechanics may try to steer you towards. Cheers.

I changed my gearbox and didn't change the computer, done 7000 kms since then, no issues. Depends on your mechanic, if he can do a check using the scanner and everything is ok, not sure why computer would need to change. My car is 2001 and had done 300k kms

Hi Abdullateef, Please read my review which explains the gearbox problems we had. It was a common computer-related problem and easily fixed by the right people. Please understand that there are mechanical issues that could also cause the same symptoms you are experiencing.

I have a 2004 Toyota Avensis Verso. Whenever I am going on motorway and it speeding above 60 mph. its not picking the speed up and needle on the speedometer gradually going down even I am putting foot on race. Eventually I have to stop on the hard shoulder and switch it off. After a minute I have to switch on it again to move out. It happens again when I am going above 60. Can anybody suggest me what is the actual problem I am having?

i had a similar problem with my verso, it would slow down and didnt know why. WHen it happens next time pull over and try to smell the brakes and feel the tyre rims ( be careful as it may be hot).. If you smell anything or rim is hot, most probabbly your brakes are getting jammed and not retracting. I had this issue.

if this is not the problem then you need to check the gearbox.

My avensis verso 2002 overheating problem: we changed water pump, radiator, radiator cup, open the thermostat, no leak whatsoever but still overheating. What next should I check and change?

Jamaican Dude

If it is the 1az engine then you might wanna check the head gasket or you might have thread stripping inside the block cylinder.

If that is the case you will have to get it re thread or purchase a new block. Go with 2007 and up though.

If you think it's overheating because the fan is coming on that's what it's suposed to do.this model does not have a temperature gage but a lite when it overheats a bit dumb.

Can I swap a 2 litre engine (manual gearbox) with a 2.4 litre engine from an auto and still retain my computer and gearbox

Simon c

You might need the extra 400cc if you plan on carrying 7 people. You can fit quite a bit into an avensis and it will struggle up a hill if you gimp the engine.
