Love it ! – Only just got it but am very happy with it.The paint is still very nice after 22 years and have had my mechanic check it out and found no problems with it. Has done 300,000 klms and runs sweet, plenty of power and the five speed manual gearbox works great. Less than ten thousand to buy it which is good for such a well looked after car. Show details ·  1

Great car – I have had this car for 6 and half years. It is my everyday car. It's gets driven 4 or 5 times a week along a dirt road into town. We have used it for towing, 4wd, driving on sand. The car gets an oil change every 8 to 10 thousand kms. Show details

an oldie but a goodie – This has been a great workhorse for everyday commute to going twice around Australia. Loads of interior space and plenty of seats for a big family. The engine has been rebuilt once and has gone 590000 klms. Great 4x4 performance and towing ability. No rust. I would buy another one! Show details

Brilliant 4WD – I bought my second Prado a diesel in December 2001, it now has 688000 k’s all driven by myself. Oil and filter has been changed every 5000 K’s using basic oil and after market filters and uses not one drop of oil between changes Toyota service about every 100000 K’s. Only thing changed or replaced is the radiator. My work is on civil engineering… Read more

projects throughout WA so in lots of tough conditions, carrying loads and towing quite a bit. Now it needs quite a bit of work doing. It’s simply a fantastic vehicle.

Best Car ever owned – Love the build quality. The 5VZFE engine is an awesome design. Going to rebuild my engine at 380xxx. Still going strong just a little piston slap on one cylider. Obviously someone didn't change the oil. I got her in this condition. I'll put 50xxx on it before I bother swapping the engines over haha. Show details

2001 VZJ95R 3.4L AUTO GXL – As previously posted, we've had this Prado from 2001 when it was 3 months old... cannot speak highly enough to say how well engineered and comfortable this genuine 7 seater for 7 average adults, has turned out to be. "4R Motors" in Seaford 3198 has meticulously serviced this every 5,000 kms without fail. All it has ever needed is Oil and Filter… Read more

every 5,000. "Forte" Fuel System Cleaner is added every 10,ooo kms. Auto gets new oil every 80,ooo kms. Both Diffs and Transfer gets new oil every 80,ooo kms. Abnormals amount to 1 new Radiator and 1 new AC Compressor at 180,000kms. Elec aerial motor has failed, so we just manually adjust when needed as its a huge job to renew, and reception has not been affected, so why worry? Cannot believe how easily it tows 4 tonne of firewood to Mt Hotham every year ! All in all... would not ever sell this vehicle. it's now April 2019. She's 18 y/o and a member of the Family. I pity the "yuppies" who have long sold this model for a new one every 5-7 years as so many do for the sake of "keeping up with the Jones's"... new cars have just got worse every year on many levels,

TOYOTA ARE No 1 FOR A GOOD REASON..........THEY BUILD QUALITY AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE – We purchased a demo 2001 Toyota Prado VZJ95R V6 3.4L Auto when it was 3 months old.........in 17 years it hasn't so much as blown a fuse or had any other fault due to any stupid faults that are common in so many present day AWD. Yes it has 4 wheel Disc ABS, Traction Control, Stability Control, Air Bags, Side Impact protection, all the bells and… Read more

whistles, and still drives like new. We expect 7 kms per litre for such a solid vehicle built with a CHASSIS. It sees and loves the snow at Hotham around 28 days per year and tows 3 tons of firewood effortlessly. I coulnt get over how it refused to lose control in the snow even when I forced the wheel sharply ! Amazing ! The engiine oil & filter is changed without fail every 7500kms, Transmission Oil every 60,000 kms, all 4 Filters exactly as per Severe Service Schedule, both diff oils every 60,000kms, Fuel Injector Cleaner added to both tanks every 10,000kms , Coolant change every 80,000kms. Paint still looks brand new ! ................... not a single minute of a "let down" or failure ........ so what are people thinking when they trade in a car like this ?????? ........... is it ego, or keeping up with the Jones's, too much money, or what ??????

Engine expired at 80000 km – Prado petrol 3.4l always smelt 'fumy' reported to dealer on many occasions, they said is a large engine and will produce a lot of exhaust. At 80000 km found metal shavings under oil cap, motor started smoking. Put some Wyn's Stop Smoke in it and traded it in and bought a Honda Euro.  Show details

Toyota Prado 1999.... Delivers all you ask of it – Bought this vehicle 6 months ago after reading favourable reviews. Needed a 7+ seater occasionally.... a larger vehicle....a 4x4 for weekend adventures and a city tourer... Big ask I know !!! Well after 6 months I love it more now than when I first got it. Parts are actually cheap compared to most 4x4's. it's well mannered on road and after being… Read more

off-road a fair bit, I can honestly say It punches far above it's weight in terms of off-road ability. Including in the recent floods... being caught out in deep water while getting some people To higher ground I was stunned and very much relieved that it shrugged very deep water off And delivered us safely with not even a splutter. Fuel consumption is ok IF you drive it normally. I find it is only marginally more thirsty than your normal 6 cylinder car. (keeping them tuned and no needless hard acceleration is the key...) If your a green light racer...you will pay at the bowser ! The Prado holds 160 litres which I've found great for long distance and you never have to pay top dollar for fuel.

Mine has 150k on it now, and as I read from other owners 300-400K + is pretty normal, and I'd now believe it. Only normal servicing, and after a proper mechanical check was given a clean bill of health. Very large interior, and actually seat 8 in relative comfort. What can I say....very impressed so far, actually went back in years to buy a Prado that I could afford and Glad I did. Will be keeping it for many more years and then buy a later model Prado.

Only issue I have had is a very common Prado one. LHS of dash board develops a rattle and is Easily fixed for good by installing a small bracket and an additional bolt. (easy DIY job) 30 minute fix and never happens again.

I now know why I see so many older Prado's on the road....seems they do last forever....

Update 22/11/22 8 years later and clocked 220000 What can I say, regular service's and no problems apart from a starter motor replacement.

It has been a daily driver, towed our boats and been outwest on 5000km holidays towing a camper. Our last holiday out west in July 2022 I put it in to my mechanic and said to go right over it and let me know exactly what needs attending to.... The complete list was.... new rear disc pads ! You can't ask better than that.of a vehicle.

Reliable family car – Our 1997 Toyota Prado GXL has been the most reliable vehicle we've ever owned. It is only now, after 14 years, that things are starting to need attention. Although it's got the smaller motor compared to the newer model Prado, it still goes very well & gets up hills & can overtake with ease. There aren't many vehicles around with 8 seats & we need… Read more

the 4X4 abilities due to where we live. Highly recommended! I'm just disappointed the new Prado only has 7 seats. No good to us with 6 children! Extremely reliable! No airbags on our model.

Good – An excellent, well built 4WD that looks very good. I have a 2000 VX which has served me extremely well over the last 4 years. I love the looks and it has heaps of power (4.0 litre petrol), but the only real gripe I have is that it is thirsty and the handling is pretty poor (although it is 2 tonnes of 4WD, so this is expected). I would thoroughly… Read more
