Has served me well – I have read the two other reviews on this machine and in part, summarising, agree that quality controls on equipment is not what it used to be. Today, it is like the lotto, one machine runs perfect with the next having problems. I have had this machine for over 6 years with the machine running perfectly way past warranty. The machine starts easy but does require warm up prior to using or it cuts out when first loaded. Changing cord is easy and generic heads fit perfectly. The engine is very powerful but to keep it running well the oil change frequency has to be short as this machine runs on a tiny amount of oil. So I do as one other writer does and that is to check oil every time and change it after three uses on our acreage. If there was one issue I have with this machine it is that for right handed people the air filter cover catches your clothes and comes off with the filter. Then you have to find it on our small acreage. To combat this I fixed it with cheap electricians tape. The only mechanical issue I have had way past warranty is that one of the centrifugal springs broke and symptomatic of this is that as you pull the cord the head wants to spin with it. Rather than buy whole assembly I found a spring supplier with springs only .5mm difference in overall diameter with other dimensions spot on. The machine has been working perfectly ever since. I contacted the Ebay seller and he now has this model in his list that the springs will fit. Overall, for the money, what I got, meeting my needs perfectly along with reliability I have to give it 5 stars.Currently I am buying another model TB575EC for another property.....so we shall see.

Poorly designed & manufactured brushcutter – Bought a used Troy-Bilt TB590 EC brushcutter from original buyer & it previously had little use - with starter cord not working. After repairing the unit & using it, I found it had some serious design & manufacture flaws. Although the engine seems up to heavy-duty tasks, the overall build quality is poor. Identified flaws include: 1 Starter cord replacement is ridiculously convoluted - one first detaches engine from shaft, unbolts casing, then removes clutch assembly - just to access the starter pulley! 2 Throttle safety lock lever not working properly & on inspection was a design fault - I modified the internals & added a steel spring to correct the problem. 3 The throttle cable is manufactured slightly too short, so it's almost impossible for the engine to idle - the cutting blade rotates at 'idle'. 4 Rotating shaft - 1st time I used the unit (with blade, cutting guinea grass), the cutting head half of the shaft rotated! The pin meant to hold it simply sheared off. The 2nd time I used it (after repairing the shaft) the factory-fitted bolt on the engine half of the shaft sheared off, allowing the entire cutting head to rotate again!! This unit is seriously under-engineered for the task. 5 Air filter plastic housing dismantles itself - despite drilling a hole at the bottom of the housing & using a cable tie to fasten it, the top 2 'locking tabs' dislodge! The 2nd time I used the unit, the air filter cover + filter dislodged 3 times! To resolve this problem I'll need to fasten it in 2 or 3 places - this is dreadful design & cheap manufacture. 6 Foot stand undersized - one side of this snapped off during its 2nd use. Clearly the guage of this wire 'stand' is too light for the task - yet another example of poor quality manufacturing.
Since buying this unit I've spent more time on repairs than on brushcutting! Had I been aware of the inherent design & manufacturing flaws of this unit, I would've bought a Honda UMK435 unit.

Ok but engine replaced in 12 months – Got this brush cutter/ whipper snipper with my TB30R ride on mower from Masters. Came with brush cutter blade as well so bonus extra. All good until 12month mark when oil started leaking out of a hairline fracture in the crank case cover. Took to local service agent and MTD as Troy Bilt are know in Aus authorised brand new engine with no questions asked. Thanks for great service and standing by the product. Just disappointing fault developed in 12 months of moderate use. Word of warning read all the instructions and clean the air filter regularly and replace the spark plug annually (both these are easy to do if you read instructions or look on YouTube). Also check the oil every time and replace every 8 hours or so to maintain engine life.
