Not the best option

published

Not instinctive to activate and not easy, nay impossible to check your balances. Verification process is cumbersome and does not recognise accurately submitted information.

No possibility to speak to a person on the phone and the online system rejects my PN as incorrect (It certainly is not incorrect). and now, due to too many unsuccessful attempts to access my card balance, I am blocked.

Scammed - There goes the decent Christmas Bonus

published

My partner got a card for his Christmas Bonus.
We went to use it as it expires this month
Well transaction didn't go through
Logged in to see that the payment was taken not long after card was activated
So disappointing
It happened 102 days ago. There is only a 120 day window to log a complaint.
The card expires in 5 days and only had a 6 month expiry
To top it all off they apparently won't respond for 10 WEEKS!!!

Impossible to use

published

Have tried to use this for so many online purchases, declined, declined, something wrong with your payment...goes on and on. Never works! Balance thankfully not stolen but how and when I will ever get to use is a mystery.

Have received three of these cards - none work

published

My daughter and I have received 3 of these and none work. My daughter is only 8 and 2 of these were her birthday present from a friend overseas. I try emailing and calling and can’t get through either way. I assume the cards are a complete scam.

Totally waste of money. $ used by others before I activated the card.

published

Received as gift from employer. had issue with activation and submitted form to query. (there's no contact number) They came back and told me the card is already been used with $8 balance. (was$300). Unauthorised payments can just made by others before you even activated the card.

A deliberate scam

published

The cards are designed to be very hard to use which means that the money not used will go back to the company 'Universal Gift Cards'. The instructions on how to use them differs depending on who answers your email and some stores point of sale technology don't accept them. They need activating, they expire and the pin isn't needed. If you can persist (it took about 6 months and multiple emails to the company), I finally was able to use them - but each time, it took about 2-4 attempts at the register to do so.

I have submitted dispute claims however both are “ineligible” since the transactions were too small and/or more than 120 days ago.

Only 6 month expiration

published

Has a very limited expiration on it of 6 months yet it doesn't tell you this on the email they send with the card. It actually says valid to 00/00 so I took it to mean it didn't expire.
Pretty poor considering consumer law for most gift cards is 3 years in Australia, but as this is through work it doesn't have to meet these laws.

Fraudulent Transactions

published

I submitted a form outlining fraudulent purchases on my card weeks ago but haven’t heard anything back. There is no number to call and there doesn’t seem to be any action taken to get my money back. It will now run over the 21 days claimed to be resolved.

I submitted claim forms of fraudulant card debits to the value of $2816 and recieved an email from the disputes team (CRM:0225489) that the application was approved. However the refund upload on a new card was only $1049 with no explaination of the gap in refund. No reply to enquiry emails. Is this going to be rectified?

Details

Universal Gift Cards, also operating under the name Corporate Prepaid Cards, produce many unhappy customers. One reviewer summarised the feeling well when they wrote, ‘This is meant to be a gift card but…it is a complete scam.’

The most common grievances were as follows:

  • If you don’t register the gift card within the six month ‘activation period,’ the company cancels the card, and keeps any money on it – even if the expiry date hasn’t passed. For some reviewers, this involved sums of $500+.
  • Reviewers reported bad and evasive customer service. They were charged money for making routine enquiries over the phone, such as asking why their cards were declined, checking their card balance or asking for a reactivation code.

A number of customers expressed a desire or intention to report this company to the ACCC or NSW Fair Trading.
