Handy functions, easy to clean and reliable – I was tired of the other brands of microwaves only lasting a few years, simply because the inside cavity would rust out along the edges or the electronics would stop working. This model (which I see is now discontinued) has been going strong for over three years now and hasn't missed a beat. The sensor reheat function is quite handy, and the grill… Read more
setting even allows me to cook pizza on the wide non-stick tray they include with the microwave. Best of all, the stainless steel interior does not rust! I'm hoping this will be the most reliable microwave I've ever owned (my mum had a previous model, and hers is still going). Disclaimer: I was offered a free gift for this review, but wanted to wait a few years to see how it went first. Now that this model is discontinued I may not get the gift, but I still wanted to share my positive experience anyway in case it helps anyone else looking at the newer models.
Second time a similar item has had a hole blown in it – In 2021 We bought an Ariston Crisp and Grill. Adored it until around ten months later it blew a hole in the left hand side of the oven with burn marks all around it. I was steaming veg at the time and were lucky we were in the house. Took it back to Harvey Norman in Capalaba and they were very concerned and we exchanged the Ariston as it had… Read more
been taken over by Whirlpool. This was March 22. My husband had been wiping the inside of the door with a damp cloth. Oven wasn't on. Closed the door and noticed a flash. Another hole in the left hand side of the machine. No burn marks this time. I love these machines, they make cookiing so easy, but just can't trust them anymore. Ten years, I think these particular models have only been around for three or so years. Can anyone advise differently please?
The oven stopped working in less than a year – The oven was good while it worked. Unfortunately, microwave function stopped working and I still haven't been able to fix it under warranty after 4 months of going back and forward. Considering their service agent knew what was wrong without visiting, I would think it's something that happens all the time. Don't buy Whirlpool products, their warranty service is terrible. Mine is over 10 years old going great! – First I need to say, I have a previous model which has been upgraded I don't know how many times. Mine is over ten years old and like the title says, it is still going just like new. It's a great, great machine. We use it predominantly to microwave and the touch controls offer precision. Occasionally, when I need extra oven space though, the… Read more
convection feature of this machine is SO handy to have in the kitchen. There's nothing more to say really because it does what it's supposed to do and has done it superbly for a long time now. I'm extremely happy with this purchase.
Loving Crisp and Grill Microwave – Loving our new JT4791X because it is easy to use. Crisp function is fantastic and is fast and efficient while cooking. The Salesman was very enthusiastic about this microwave overall. Show details
Great Microwave - Easy to use – I have now had this Microwave Oven (JT479IX) since 02/01/2021. It was purchased to replace an Whirlpool Microwave – model 6MT48 bought on 03/01/2004 – so 17 years ago. This model has performed well over the 17 years of ownership never giving me any trouble at all. So it was only natural that I should buy another. The new model is very similar to… Read more
the old one with a few additions. Like a fan forced convection oven, computer style icons in lieu of buttons and some program differences. The learning curve for the JT479IX was very small indeed as it is very similar to my old one. Hence the reason for buying it. In the time that I have had it I have found it great to use. I have not used all the functions but the ones I have used have worked well indeed – as they should. Since buying this new model I have used the fan forced function a lot. So much so that I now rarely use the main oven in the kitchen. As a result I have now decided to keep my 6MT48 as an additional appliance for use when the JT479IX is being used as a fan forced oven. This new oven is a large and heavy appliance but looks great on the kitchen benchtop although it does take up a lot of space. All in all a great appliance which works as expected. This is an exceedingly easy to use appliance with easy to understand icons at the top of the black glass door. The interior is stainless steel which is easy to keep clean as is the exterior. All in all a great oven and in my opinion the best on the market for ease and simplicity of use. I have read that the user manual is not easy to follow. I disagree. The user manual I found was informative and easy to follow as well as well written. The only section I found lacking was the section on the ‘Chef’s Menu’. I think this could have been explained a bit better. But one of the joys of these appliances is finding out how they work. A little bit of trial and error and in no time you are familiar with it.
I guess the only negatives I can come up with is the fact that it does not have a clock unlike my previous model which had a 24 hour clock. Why the designers/engineers decided to omit this feature I do not know. Also I do not know why they put a large round dial on the front of the oven door. I would have thought that it would have been better to stick with icons instead for a neater appearance. But this is just nit picking on my part.
Would I recommend this appliance? Yes, I would. I have no hesitation in recommending this appliance even though it does not have a 24 hour clock. It does have a count down timer but not a clock.
Excellent Microwave – I am so happy with the whirlpool microwave it has so many features for cooking every type of food, and superb recipes which are delicious and very easy to use also
Excellent for crisping and reheating meals – This oven is solid and works effectively to reheat meals and to crisp leftovers. Works quickly and the crisping plate is fantastic. Saves me booting up the wall oven for small quantities. Show details
Good Microwave – There a lot of functions to work through but the basic microwave and oven work a treat. The microwave itself is very sturdy and heavier and better built compared to the other microwave/oven combos out there. Show details
Fabulous Microwave – This microwave is unbelievable. Cooks my roast dinners in half an hour.... delicious. Steamer is super also and cooks vegetables perfectly. Other features like fan forced oven, grill/microwave work beautifully. Best Crisp and Grill on the market.
Takes some getting used to – So far does a great job of cooking food when you can work out the appropriate settings for what you are cooking, but this is not always obvious so some things can take a bit of trial and error. Still learning the ropes of this machine as I go. Food is cooked evenly, and I am loving the ease of the sensor function! I do wish companies would use… Read more
straightforward language to talk about product features instead of fanciful gibberish like “6th sense” though!
This is one of the Magic wave not just Microwave in the Market – The best part of this Microwave is most of the popular dishes menu is pre fed, all you have to do is follow the instruction and result is very impressive. This is in true sense a House master Chef who can look after most of daily food preparation. My wife is very happy and so i am. Highly recommended Show details
Am struggling to adapt to this way of cooking - takes time to adjust my thinking – I have not used a convection oven before and am finding it confusing until worked out. I would have appreciated being able to go to a demonstration - but am sorting it out - sometimes with trepidation. When I sort out a recipe the results are good. Am looking forward to receiving your cook book. all in all a great product. Show details
Find out how Whirlpool 31L Convection, Crisp & Grill Microwave JT479IX compares to other Benchtop / Toaster Ovens
Know better, choose better.
EXCELLENT – I purchased this oven to replace my large Sharp Convection Microwave and found it to be much better overall. The reheat function is excellent the food is always hot. The convection oven works brilliantly from cooking cakes or pies right through to crispy pizza and I am slowly working my way around all the features on offer. I have had this… Read more
now for over 3 months and am very happy with it especially for quick snacks such as toasted sandwiches, chips or bacon and eggs. I did chip the glass turntable, my fault as I am not used to glass however the service department have been brilliant with their communication and sending out replacements for me even in the midst of Covid. Overall very very happy and would recommend this the only downside would be that the cooking instructions could be more detailed to accommodate the many features.
Love it!!! – Once you have had one you will never go back. I love the expanded menu, such as the chef menu, it really works. The food stays fresh, just like a normal oven, especially using the crisp plate. This is NOT a normal microwave! Love it!!! Thank you Whirlpool. Show details
No other microwave would do – I had a Whirlpool JT369, and when that died after 6.5 years, nothing else but another Whirlpool Crisp n Grill would do. After I had one of these all-in-one combi microwave, convection oven and grill with the special crisp plate, I could not bear the thought of going back to a “normal” microwave. At $600+ this is a pricy benchtop microwave. It is… Read more
a big 31L with a pull-down door like a regular oven. Compared to the older model, it offers more functions but now no longer offer the metal baking tray and the plastic dish cover as included accessories. Both are at additional cost. Included accessories are a plastic steamer, low and high grill stands, non-stick metal crisp plate and plastic removable handle.
The included printed manual is adequate at best. The 4 page quick guide is very useful in getting you up and running quickly. Operating the microwave is fairly intuitive once you are familiar with the icons.
Function icons are touch-activated in a strip across the top of the door, on either side of a central knob that you turn right or left for sub-functions (eg microwave wattage) and duration (e.g. 1 minute etc), and depress to confirm the choice that is displayed on a small screen to the left of the knob. “Stop” and “Jet Start” touch buttons are on the extreme left and right respectively. The “Jet Start” button is also used for shortcut/instant 100% microwave at 30 second increments.
When the door is open, you can see additional printed icons across the top that serve as reminders for the 6th sense auto functions e.g. defrost - choose 3 for chicken, 4 for fish etc. Or if you prefer to be in control, you can choose 1 for manual.
Upgraded functions from the old model include a new pre-heat choice for convection cooking, 3 temperatures for the grill, a special refresh function for frozen bread, and - I love this! - to stop the turntable rotating to fit in larger dishes. There is still a stopwatch timer function, but there is no longer a display clock.
There are also pre-programmed recipes. And there is the ability to store your own favourite programs, like the equivalent of “macros” on the computer. I don’t use this as it’s too fancy for me. To make full use of the pre-programmed recipes, I’d suggest you Google “90 recipes for Jet Chef premium” and download the free eBook. This is much clearer than the instructions in the included manual.
Any cons? Only minor ones: - Due to its size (depth) and my short arms, I find it a challenge to clean the back of the oven. The old model presented the same problem. - Keeping the touch control panel clean and finger-print free is an endless task.
Best kitchen Appliances I have ever bought A+ – what can I say. I have gone from having a Microwave and a oven to all in One. The defrost is perfect it doesn't cook the corners of the meat like a Microwave dose. Best chips on the crisp plate. Kids love it. They look at the chef menu and cook dinner now. They love how its programed. Especially the popcorn button, perfect popcorn. Don't knock it till you try it. You will not look back Show details
No beeps, great convection oven – This is an interesting product. Spoiler alert, it's an awesome oven with more pros than cons. I was nervous about buying because of the cost and size. I paid more than $600 recently. Firstly, it has an option in settings to disable button beeps. I applaud this rare feature, and switched the beeps off on day one. I don't even like microwaves,… Read more
and rarely use the microwave. This oven is a good convection oven. It's awesome how the door opens like a full size oven. This improves access, and you can sit hot plates on the door.
The rotating dial to select programs and options is great, I wish more products had physical dials with screens like this. It's fun to set the controls, unlike normal appliances with boring buttons.
Grill works great.
Crisper tray will crisp, but don't expect super-crispy. It runs out of "steam" and gives your potato wedges a bit of crisp, but not that amazing. Still it's early days, I may get better results over time.
Couple of cons...
The steaming function is a joke. Not sure why any manufacturer claims you can steam vegies by using microwaves to boil water. Your vegies just end up getting nuked by the microwaves. It's misleading to say this oven can "steam" when the microwaves are clearly involved in the cooking of the vegies that you put in the steam container. I tried , and the carrots ended up like victims of nuclear fallout. Luckily I don't care, and the convection oven, grill, and occasional microwave use is excellent.
But this oven won't be hugely popular because it needs to sit on a bench, it's not meant to be enclosed in cupboard space. It's bigger than most microwaves, which is a good thing if you have the space.
I rate 4.5 stars.
This is the new update – This new oven is better and greater than our previous one we searched for an alternative in this price range but nothing else on the market can better this oven. One disappointment with this machine is that it did not come with the baking tray or plate cover (optional extra) as it did with JT369. that aside I am enjoying learning using this . Show details
Would be lost without it – This is my second Crisp N Grill Microwave purchase, I still use the original “Gusto Steam” which we have had for a number of years, we had two microwaves; the other unit; a Sharp Inverter stopped working, and hence the reason for buying a replacement. This new 6th Sense Whirlpool JT479IX Microwave is more powerful and has many more functions,… Read more
including convection, we I will now probably stop using the regular oven, as this new microwave will save time and energy. This new 6th Sense model and the Gusto both have the crisp function which I personally would be lost without; as I use that function for making grilled cheese on toast, heating fruit/meat pies, making instant porridge, heating soups/drinks, the list is endless, and I would be lost without it. Now owning two, i’m in microwave heaven.
