Constructing the Zinus bed frame took 20 minutes with two of us working together and there were less arguments than is typical with other flat pack constructions.

I've used slat bases before and in my experience they creak and move around under the mattress. I confess I was concerned about this going in, however there hasn't been a single creak. In fact, the Zinus bed frame is solid and remains so almost a month later. Zero bolts or screws loosening, no wobbling, no creaks, no issues whatsoever.

I am so very impressed with the minimalist and modern design of the Zinus bed frame. The grey cushioning fabric extends across all 4 sides of the bed. Something that was surprising given the very affordable price point of $199. Comparable bed frames tend to only cushion the base and bed head.

I would not hesitate to recommend the Zinus bed frame to anyone looking for an affordable, modern and durable bed frame. In fact, I have been so impressed I will be buying another for my spare bedroom.

believe it or not! I thought there was a box missing but no, it's just very cleverly packaged. I'm hopeful I will be able to figure out how to pack it back in there and zip it back up when it comes time to move, because the difference in handling just a bed head with everything concealed within compared with the Ikea bed in the other room which I have to move in several heavy, cumbersome pieces is significant, and it will save me a lot of hassle and effort.

I had to have the carpet cleaned which required me to move the bed out, so I've already pulled it apart and put it back together and it was surprisingly a totally stress-free experience. It's moved or squeaked one bit in the month I've been using it and I have no concerns about its durability at all. It also looks great!

flat pack box, a little over 35kg.....definitely a two person lift. Unboxing was a breeze, and all the parts were neatly packed, (like Tetris), in the headboard. Even a small toolkit. I had the bed completed, and ready to accept a mattress within an hour, with the help of my missus. When building the bed, I noted the rubber lining, where the wooden slats meet, and the padded feet on all the legs. There will be no creaking from this bed. The frame is supported in the centre with 3 legs, and a further 3 on each side, totalling 9 legs, all steel. It's been just over a week now, and my sleep has been uninterrupted...... Being a raised bed, I can also vacuum underneath without shuffling furniture around. The bed is very sturdy, and the only creaking is from the floorboards and my tired bones! Nevertheless, moving house with this bed base should be a breeze: simply unscrew everything and stash it neatly back inside the bed-head for easy transportation.

Tip: Take some photos of the unboxing process. Otherwise, you might find yourself playing a puzzling game of "Umm, just how did all this fit in again??"

Another tip: Keep all the packaging (like the polystyrene spacers and plastic bags) inside the bed-head. That way, you can re-pack everything neatly when the time comes to move.

THE CONSTRUCTION

If you've ever assembled furniture from Ikea, you know the drill – well, no actual drills required at all – it's all about following those pictorial instructions, matching letters and numbers like a puzzle-solving champ. Everything goes smoothly until you reach a particular point where confusion sets in. In this case, it's when you attach the four side pieces.

Now here's a real pro tip: Don't get distracted by the giant 'L' and 'R' stamped on those metal side pieces because they're as meaningless as a chicken wearing roller skates. Just keep following the instructions (or trust your intuition) and you'll have the whole thing built in around an hour – less if you're a seasoned flat-pack expert.

Good lord, another tip!: Toss aside that regular Allen key they give you with the pack of bolts. Because inside the smaller cardboard box of goodies, you'll find a much more satisfying ratchet key to wield like a pro!

HOW ABOUT THE COMFORT?

Ah, the million-dollar question – how comfortable is it? This question weighed heavily on my mind, since I've been using a sprung base for the past three decades. Switching to a regular slat base felt like a daring gamble. Would it offer enough comfort, despite not being as bouncy?

On the first night, I sensed a difference, not necessarily unpleasant, but undeniably different. However, after that initial adjustment, I've spent another five nights on this bed, and I must say, it's both comfortable and supportive. So yes, I believe this bed base and I are destined to be nightly friends.

WHAT ABOUT THE MATTRESS THOUGH?

Great question! I didn't get a new mattress, so my testing was conducted with my trusty four-year-old Aldi coil-spring and memory foam mattress – and let me tell you, I'm still over the moon with it. Now, keep in mind that if you have a firmer mattress and you're accustomed to a sprung base, well, as they say, "your mileage may vary."

ANYTHING ELSE?

Just one thing – and this is why I deducted one star from my rating – the bed base doesn't come with casters, nor is it feasible to add them. Consequently, it's immovable (especially on our plush deep-pile carpet). Once you've assembled it and placed your mattress on top, consider it rooted in place. This might not be an issue unless you position the bed right against a wall or other furniture. Making the bed under those circumstances would become an Olympic-level challenge! Zinus, please take note for your next model – add some casters! Surely a set of wheels wouldn't break the bank, right?

CONCLUSION

The Zinus Liam queen-size bed base has a clean and straightforward design that should blend with most room decors. I think it offers excellent value for money, being both easy to assemble and convenient to transport. As for its durability, only time will tell, but I have no immediate concerns in that regard. The bed base appears to be well-built, especially considering its affordable price of $199 at the time of writing.
