Happy Jan – My mtd 13.5/38 has been really good so far, it's second hand and wasn't treated very well, it was used as a 4wheeler instead of a mower. I changed the blades as they had been hit by rocks many times, made sure the decks straight, then gave him a service. He's run really well since, 2 years later all I can say is I'm very happy. mtd ride on mover – i have mtd ride in mover 2009 model and i can fined proper deck belt it ether to long or to short Show details
Does a great job for the money – I have the VT 4000 with the catcher option and I love it, the lawn looks fresh and clean and stick and leaves are sucked up on every run. The downside is it chews through batteries every 2 years but for the price point J can live with that. Show details
I get 1 mow on my 3.5 acres before something somewhere breaks on it – I have owned this machine less than 6 months. Since I have owned it, it has been to the mechanics 3 times. It now needs a fourth. The drive belt is awful, the safety stops are not secure. The drive power is awful. I would not recommend this machine to anyone. This is the worst hunk of meatl i have ever encountered. I get 1 mow on my 3.5 acres before something somewhere breaks on it. Show details
Stop start very annoying – Bought MTD rde on second hand $1500.00 in 2020. Machine is easy to operate on rural yard. Chair is narrow and not that comfortable., Seat Tips slightly forward. Main issue since purchase is it cuts out after 5 minutes then you leave it and restart it, goes then it stops again. We have had it looked at by 2 repair shops who cant find the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions? Show details
Get what you pay for – Bought this mower second-hand under 12 months ago. It was fine for the first 9 months until it kept shooting drive belts, the tensioner for the rear drive belt gets bent because it's so flimsy therefore shoots belts. Got that problem fixed (by myself) and then the diff started clicking when Turning, all the way until the mower couldn't move. Took… Read more
the diff out welded it together (difflock) worked for a while until the stress from that broke the Actual gears in the diff, basically removed them altogether and welded some steel pipe to the each side of the axle. This worked great until the mower was towing over 300 kg and it let go on one side so only one wheel driving. Just before that I got a pretty small rock and one Spindale broke all the mounts and that mower was done.
suits person with good mechanical knowledge - minor irritations. must use "swing blades" = not solid bars – slightly heavy steering, reasonable turning circle. This mower, is VERY simple to operate! To cut grass evenly, you must first set cutting deck "level", ( with rear wheels, ) with mower on a hard flat surface. this is very simple to do. No "special tools" required! Height "adjustment" of cutting deck, speed and gear selection, are simple. … Read more
Make sure you follow the Owners Manual directions!!! Engine is usual Briggs & Stratton - & very reliable - if you service it regularly, as instructed! Change engine oil ANNUALLY! Regardless of number of hours, mower is used! My MTD 135/38 mower cuts a 5 acre farm, grazing property, without slightest difficulty. Cutting deck drive belt, lasts several seasons. Transmission drive belt, is original, from new! Done hundreds of hours duty. Use "after market" swing cutter blade assemblies, to prevent damage to cutter deck!
Terrible mower – Bought from MTD order# CD6901745C18 March 21 2018 Received with front wheel bent from shipping. Transmission went out after 5 months. Mower won't go fast enough. You have to mow thin grass in 5th gear. 5th,6th,7th gear not much faster than 4th gear. Mtd said mower need speed adjustment. Took to shop and they adjusted per MTD instruction from their… Read more
call to MTD. Made unit worse now clutch pedal is adjusted all the way into mower body, does allow enough space for pedal to travel when you change gears. No better speed. Now 1st gear doesn't work on a hill. Taking to another authorized dealer but don't think they can repair this mower. Mower is no good. Do not buy this mower.
My baby – This mower cuts my grass just how i like it and is perfection, best ride of my life ! It has lasted really long and is extremely durable and reliable for all my needs as i am not the only person that rides it. God bless the mower love love love Show details
Excellent riding mower starts quick – I sold my 2008 Yard Machines, which never through a belt. My new Yard Machines has a Briggs and Stratton PowerBuilt 15.5 HP engine that starts immediately and powers through 12" grass. I'm very happy with this riding mower and highly recommend it to folks who need quality mower at a discount price. Show details
My little hot rod – My MTD is OLD but it keeps going, due to its age I have had to just about rebuild it only through fair wear and tear. This little beast starts easy and away we go,have a bit of fun while cutting grass,I punish it and it's never let me down. Don't know if I would have a newer model as I like the the metal body on the oldie, anyway don't have to buy a new one...I've got the old 13.5/38 hot rod, this will go forever Show details
Love it – I love my lawnmower because it is perfect cuts my grass as I like is powerful but not excessively powerful. They are fairly priced and come with a good Warrinty I've had mine Now for 3 years and it's still going strong but when it does stuff up ill be sure to buy a new MTD Show details
No problems so far – Had the unit for 12 months, pros, easy to change oil, starts every time, does a reasonable job cutting the grass. Seat could be a little more comfortable as is hard, can get 2 full mows from 9 litres fuel.( my block is 3300 m2) A big annoyance is the mulching kit which will add $90 to your purchase. Its totally useless and broke away after 10… Read more
minutes. Tried various methods of securing but flies off every time. Has an annoying safety feature, will not mow in reverse !!! Would I buy again, well not based on some of these reviews but so far apart from the mulching issue no issues here.

Biggest POS I've ever owned – We purchased our MTD brand new in 2011 and have regretted it ever since, we replaced a Bolens we had got for $500 on t we had to do little more than put Fule in for many years, MTD has a rediculous 2 blade 46" cut that means 2 quite large light gauge blades bend when they even look like hitting something this puts load on the lit weight alloy… Read more
spindle housings and because they're are 2 large blades not 3 smaller blades grass that is a little longer chokes the whole thing up worse than eating too much cheese
The maximum ground sped on this thing is likened to a geriatric turtle and a season doesn't go buy when I don't have to replace drive belts and blades, this is a very expensive machine to keep doing a very ordinary job on your lawn
This thing is so unreliable I recently purchased a 2nd hand Murray so we can have 2 mowers running in my 2 acre house yard on a good weekend and atleast the Murray will get the job on weekends when the MTD does its usual mid mow breakdown
Not bad but has a few problems – This machine was new 6 years ago and used on about 3 acres of lawn. Always in the shed and looks still brand new.. The B&S engine is great. My block is sloping and I had problems turning up on the slope. The diff just allowed the wheels to turn without traction. Bought a set of mini snow chains from the US and that fixed that. Best 100… Read more
bucks I ever spent. The blades on these things are about beer can gauge steel and fold up like spaghetti when you hit even a gumnut. Replaced them with gator blades.. Solid slabs of steel about 1/4" thick. Bloody brilliant.. The downside is that the blade driving belt only lasts about 6 months but you can buy them cheap on eBay and they are not hard to replace. For some reason the battery needs to be kept on constant charge and even then you are lucky to get 12 months out of it. The latest problem is the failure of the main transmission belt. This is a mongrel to replace and after doing so the mower will only move at a snails pace. Lots of helpful advice on the net and I'm looking into that now. My first rideon was a 2nd hand Rally Roper.. a complete piece of ugly crap that shed chunks of itself every time I used it.. The welder was always ready at the shed door for repairs at the end of the day. Then I had a Husqvarna and you don't even want to hear about that experience.. haha.. happy mowing.. Geoff.
lemon – my first mtd lasted 14 yrs with a few modifications. So when it finally was unrepairable I decided to buy another. Biggest lemon ever from day one deck kept falling down, belts burning out, catcher not attached correctly by dealer. Every time dealer took 3 -4 weeks to even look at, then it often had something else broken once got it home.
Death Trap – Had a MTD that wouldn't stop while I was backing and started freewheeling down hill! Not good it wasn't stopping blades were still running down and the pond was looking deep! Yep went swimming. Problem MTD had not used Loctite on the differential cage and it came apart meaning free wheeling. MTD agreed to cover it under warranty, new trans and… Read more
other damage when it went swimming. Well over a year to get repaired, the dealer lost the mower deck, had to get an attorney to get the thing and was never right! No way in H would I ever own another MTD. The Federal Product Safety Commission investigated it. Had I bailed off the mower I may have entangled myself and been cut by the blades or possibly even had drowned if I had a piece of clothing got caught on the mower.
Bad – Bought the mower 2nd hand, the Tecumseh motor vibrated so badly it fractured the tinwork on the motor. I welded that up with extra reinforcing then the magnets on the inside of the flywheel came unstuck and munched up the alternator coils and wiring. I ditched the offending bits and relied on periodicly charging the battery for starting purposes.… Read more
Then something in the bottom of the motor let go and bits of alloy spread all over the place! It's cactus, I suspect the previous owner may have hit something solid with it and bent the conrod which would have caused most of my problems. That said a friend doesn't need his MTD anymore and it has a B+S motor in it so I will take it off his hands and use the old one for spare parts, hopefully I may have better luck with it. Its cheap, lightweight and mechanically simple Its a bit too cheap and light, so it can't handle any rough work and the steering has too much free play.
Terrible – a piece of junk it struggle in long grass the steering is all over the place dont buy one if your grass is 10 inches high i have lost confidence in it always wondering what is going to happen now . they are cheap but when you buy cheap you get cheap performance at first everything was fine but after 6 months things go wrong the starter motor goes… Read more

Good machines – Have had a White ride on mower 11.5HP B&S IC motor (Renamed MTD). Lived on a rough 2 acre highly block. Have had it for 17 years. Replaced belts twice, oil, filters and blades. Replaced batteries twice. Occasionally coax starter motor with a gentle tap. Still going great. Will need new forward reverse lever soon. Reliability
OK – Reasonable value for money but needs careful maintenance. Cut quality good and product is easy to steer with good turning circle. Seating position not particularly good for those with short legs though. So far, (2yrs) 16.5hp motor has proved reliable but ensure you change oil & clean air filter regularly! Providing blades are kept sharp, cutting… Read more
quality is good.
Get around 3.5hrs running at medium speed on 5litres fuel. Cutting deck vibrates badly and is very noisy in operation; blade engagement mechanism needs regular cleaning/lubrication or it will stick either off or on. Servicing can be expensive depending upon agent. Suggest self-servicing for belts, blades. Steering is a bit vague.
Excellent – The basic MTD has done the job on a 5 acre block. B&S IC engines have never given me any problems! I started with a secondhand MTD 11/32 in 1992, upgraded to a MTD 12/36 in 1995, and have just bought a MTD 13.5/38 - which was actually cheaper than the secondhand MTD 11/32 in 1992! The MTD has done the job on a 5 acre block. Previous MTD's needed… Read more
special attention to batteries. The plastic front of the MTD 12/36 deteriorated. In the 13.5/38 model this part is all steel.

Terrible – steer clear of this or any MTD as they are not worth the trouble you get with them. anything is better then a MTD mower unless it is also American rubbish sort of cheap but the price of parts that regularly break will financially ruin you everything that can break will break you get what you pay for..... the deck is too weak the blades are so soft… Read more
they break in longer grass (15cm)the gear box is a typical American faulty crappy design that is built for a smooth golf green and not a regular yard. bearings break belts go often and cost 50 Aus dollars a pop the Brigs n Straton is not too bad but needs a little more grunt.

Terrible – these mowers and any other mtd rubbish are only built to last the warranty period. all mtd care about is getting their $1000 in revenue. they make their machines the cheapest way possible. instead of using 4 mm plate to form what they call a cutting deck they will use 2 mm plate to save $20. the gear boxes are dodgy and wail and wine at any sing… Read more
of a incline, and need a rebuild every 50 hours. these mowers are really not for cutting lawn but rather built for a Simms metal bin.
BOTTOM LINE: money and time wasters not even fit for a go cart. noth much- ow it does cut well for the first hour! IT IS JUST A LOAD OF SCRAP STEEL
Terrible – Over all i would not recommend these unit to the rural hobbyist with paddock like grasses. They are high on maintenance as they constsantly breakdown, which is inconvient. the only good thing is price, which is questionable for the amount of servicing they require the unit is not durable enough for anything other than manicured lawns. The deck is too light weight and the unit throws belts, be lucky to last a month without something breaking.
Good – Fine machine for urban lawns and that's what it is made for. I have owned 3 years. original belt. I purchased my MTD yard machine from Home Depot. Got a good price for a 38" deck. Also was delighted to find so many add ons that can be bought. particularly like the great grass and leaf pickup. Easy to attach and remove. The large… Read more

and folds down to enter shed. Like the engine 13.5 HP is fine for St. Augustine.
Plan to buy the same machine in the future when needed. Don't particularly like the mower "on" not allowing me to go in reverse but I've become ]
used to that.
