If you're lucky enough to have not bought one early, Nissan have even updated the interior to finally move the Patrol's insides out from the late 2010's. The new screen and instrument cluster make a world of a difference in day-to-day liveability.

It's a car for those who know they need the space, the capacity and the power. It's an awesome option if you plan to spend a lot of time away from the road and big cities. It also doubles as a far more affordable V8 powered alternatives to a Defender V8 or G63 AMG.

The trade-off is the fuel bill. It's massive. You're required to fill with premium to extract all the performance you pay for from the naturally aspirated 5.6L petrol V8 too. The rolling resistance from the all-terrain tyres and ancient auto gearbox increases your fuel consumption compared to some more modern rivals. And it doesn't help that this car is functionally a brick in the world of aerodynamics.

It's a reliable and easy to live with 4x4 for those who can afford to park and fuel. If you're short on European 4x4 SUV money, it's a logical choice if you're chasing V8 power and sounds. Otherwise, it's really a statement piece for those who don't use the Patrol to its full off-road potential.

abnormally and showed drivability issues that were not consistent with a new vehicle. We returned it several times for diagnosis and repair, but the problems were never resolved. Nissan Australia accepted the transmission concerns as a major fault. 3 months after purchase, Nissan agreed to replace the transmission valve body, acknowledging that significant intervention was needed. However, the replacement did not resolve the issue, and the original symptoms continued. 9 months after the valve body replacement, the transmission problems persisted. Nissan then determined that the complete transmission assembly needed to be replaced. Springwood Nissan replaced the entire transmission unit. After the replacement transmission was installed, I was assured it would be covered by a 200,000-kilometre, 10-year warranty. Despite this, the vehicle continued to show similar symptoms, including surging and abnormal operation at around 60 km/h and low engine speeds. Nissan assessed it and advised that the transmission had failed again. Its initial proposed repair was another valve body replacement, but later was told parts needed to be ordered. The repair was then cancelled after Nissan determined the vehicle was outside the warranty period. Nissan later reconsidered the matter under ACL & agreed to repair the transmission, proposing a permanent fix using a newly designed valve body and solenoid. The process took about six weeks. However, Nissan did not obtain those proposed parts and instead fitted generic parts. During this work, further damage was also caused , but we were not told what had occurred. After collecting the vehicle following the 4th transmission repair / replacement, we drove it home and found transmission oil pooling underneath. We returned it to Nissan, where we were told the pan gasket had not been replaced and used the old one. Several days later, we noticed a burning oil smell and found both front drive axles saturated in oil, which was also leaking onto the flexible exhaust . We again returned the vehicle to Nissan for rectification. Nissan then advised that the vehicle was ready for collection. However, we later discovered that Nissan had only assessed the problem, stating both axle seals were "damaged" and leaking, but denied any connection to the transmission work, advising that we would need to pay a further $600 for repairs. We then ordered genuine parts and arranged for a specialist not associated with Springwood Nissan to fit them. Before the vehicle could reach that specialist, a check engine light appeared. A local exhaust shop ran an OBD-II diagnostic scan and identified that the rear oxygen sensor was not reading correctly. When the vehicle was placed on a hoist, we found the rear oxygen sensor damaged, and the flexible exhaust link had been creased from being folded in place? Further inspection also showed that the top engine hanger bracket / mount was torn, which appeared to be the result of Nissan removing the transmission? Springwood Nissan denied responsibility and left us with additional repair costs. Incredibly, 13 months on from this ordeal our vehicle has now broken down once again, and is displaying fault code P17F0. This appears to be the fifth major transmission-related repair event since purchase. Despite repeated repair attempts, including valve body replacement, complete transmission replacement, diagnostics and warranty interventions, Nissan has never permanently resolved the original transmission concerns, yet in the process of working on our vehicle they have managed to create more damage due to their incompetence. We have now had to purchase a New vehicle (3) because our Nissan Pathfinder has become incredibly unpredictable / unreliable . Suffice to say, Springwood Nissan and their Paramatta service centre are negligent of their responsibilities under Australian Consumer Law .
