ASUS RT-AC86U
VerifiedMPN: RT-AC86U9 reviews
Works well but its approach to network management could be better – On the upside the RT-AC86U does offer decent performance and its not too hard to set up, mostly. Where it falls down for me and my family is its approach to network management. Finding devices on a network is not well configured, so identifying specific devices, is hit and miss. Its counter intuitive interface for parental control time management… Read more
is going to confuse a lot of people (it did us initially as it asks you to specify hours "not on line" as opposed to hours spent on line) and is not as a consequence easy to set up. It consistently dropped the ball when it came to daylight saving too.
All in all an OK device from our point of view that would have made more sense had it been better at network monitoring and taken a straightforward approach to parental controls.
Warranty is an absolute rubbish, while product is great until it isn’t! – I bought an ASUS top end router 2 years ago. Warranty for routers is 3 years, however after contacting store where the device is purchased, apparently this doesn’t cover replacement, only repair. If I leave it at the place of purchase (PLE computers) they don’t offer temporary router while waiting for repair which is minimum 3 weeks+. … Read more
Furthermore, ASUS hardware is an ASUS problem, I was given 3 years “guarantee” based on the warranty. Replace it with a new ASUS router (regardless of hardware issue) and make sure whatever the issue is doesn’t happen in future products. I shouldn’t have to deal with the additional problem of waiting without a temp. Lifetime of any hardware or device is abysmal!
Asus forgot to mention this should be recalled – My understanding is this router used to be amazing. Then Asus dropped a firmware update and almost bricked it. I have one (which I am now returning under DOA conditions). The router constantly drops connections to random devices. It you Google this you will find it's common across the board. I went to Asus support and they recommend some very… Read more
generic troubleshooting but also suggest returning it in their first email. They know it's a crappy product but they are continuing to sell it. I believe this is also an issue with other similar Asus routers. I'm staying away from them completely.
Great for two-story houses. Kids happy so I'm happy – When I switched to NBN, I wanted to make sure I upgraded to a modem that worked the best for a two-story duplex. Now we have decent internet signal all through our house. Plus the kids are happy w/speed and ping while gaming. Plus we don't have lag when all of us are on our devices. Show details
So far very happy with purchase, it's exceeded expectations – Our old Netgear router died a week after we connected to the NBN so we were up for a new one. I was confused about all the choices so I went onto Whirlpool forum to get some advice and after a lot of deliberations between a TP Link and this model I decided to get this model, everyone was raving about it. A bit pricier than the TP link but so far… Read more
it has been great. We couldn't get reception out in our shed previously which we can now, there is no lag. We often have several (6) devices going all at once and it handles it very well. It's compact, it fits behind our TV without any issues and the app that comes with it is pretty high tech and cool, but easy to navigate. The support is also great, Netgear only offered a 90 day warranty, this one is 3 years and for someone who is only slightly tech savy it's a big deal to know I can have help if I need it. The best part is being able to connect a USB to our router which then connects to our computer wirelessly so I can update our media files on the USB easily without having to unplug anything. It's also compatible with other Asus modems to create a mesh system incase you ever extend on your house and need extra coverage.
Watch our for grey imports though, they only offer a 1 year warranty, make sure to purchase genuine Australian stock to get the 3 year warranty. Bought ours through a computer store online.
Reliable router – This is my second Asus router. I have the two ethernet bridged together now to increase signal strength across a large house. I think the quality with Asus is great, support and updates are also good. I would buy another Asus router in the future, maybe one with a 8 slot and not a 4 slot next time. Show details
Small, but so powerfull – I upgraded to this as my ASUS RT-AC87U was playing up, out of warranty and was using a form of wifi that ASUS was having a lot of issues with. After falling in love with the ASUS interface, and the features that are available, I decided to stay with ASUS and got their newest RT-AC86U and boy does this deliver. Just like the old 87U I had, the… Read more
wifi coverage is outstanding. My house is on a 638sqm block, and I have wifi throughout the whole house, and in the backyard. I have about 40 devices connected via wifi and ethernet cable, and performance has always been great, with little to no dropouts.
Setup was painlessly easy using the web interface and answering a few questions to get you connected to the internet and to set up your wifi. There is also a mobile app available that can show you a QR code to help quickly connected mobile devices to your wifi.
Previously this was only available via Harvey Norman via an exclusive deal, but that has now expired and this router can be brought at many different locations without having to pay the huge markup that HN had on it, or getting one from the grey import market.
When the 68U no longer cuts it – I have been using Asus routers for a long time, starting off with early models then upgrading the AC68U which did the job for years, but when the NBN came around and we needed something with a bit more juice, we decided to purchase a few of these bad boys. If you are familiar with the ASUS admin area, then you won’t have an issue configuring this… Read more
beauty and then you leave it to work it’s magic with hardly any issue. We have had these running 24/7 with multiple devices and have barely seen a hiccup, and the wifi range is excellent for both channels.
Love ASUS routers – After I bricked my R7000 Netgear router trying to flash custom firmware, I finally upgraded to this router. Always hated my Netgear (poor signal, slow speed, you name it). Yes I have tried different custom firmwares on R7000. None of them solved my problem. Finally got a proper ASUS one. It just works. I love this model as it has smaller footprint… Read more
as it's standing up in comparison to 88U and 87U. Too bad only HN sells them in Australia, so you can't really shop around unless you wanna get it from overseas. Be sure to haggle though.
