Australian Martial Arts Academy

Positive atmosphere with some challenges – We went there for a long time and it was a positive environment that encourages you to progress and better yourself. For those that stick with it, it gets results. The teachers are passionate and they have a very large number of students beyond black belt, which means you can stick with it for decades and keep improving and having people to train with, if you want. It gets mostly good reviews which I can totally understand, however, I want people to be aware of the downsides before they think about joining - Huge commitment: very high levels of commitment are mandatory - 2 lessons a week, 52 weeks a year which increases to 3 as you progress (pausing is only permitted for medical episodes). Expensive: a black belt will cost you over $8,000 excluding grading fees and other add-ons. Class sizes: these vary but can be up to 40 or 50 students in a single class at popular times. Diversity: because of the large class sizes, performance expectations and approach to discipline, only really suits neurotypical students.
