Baratza Sette

Messy beyond imagination – Spent so much money replacing my existing manual grinder to get a consistent dose only to get something that is BEYOND messy, and forums and reddit are awash with unhappy people with aftermarket and bizarre workarounds. Terrible considering that the review sites that espouse this product don't mention the problem at all. Show details
So close to excellent - still very very good – This should be a 4.5 star, but that's not how the system works in PR - and i'm closer to 4 than 5 on this beast. Our Sette came in a package with our new HX coffee machine. i wasn't planning on replacing our Breville Smart Grinder but i'm extremely happy we did. It's a really great machine. The good: - Excellent grind consistency - very… Read more
accurate on weight, and is clever enough to train the time and sensitivity when you switch beans. - Quick grind time - easy to use and intuitive - great customer support from the manufacturer - It's really nice to look at. Futuristic and clean lines.
The not so good: - It's just so darn messy. The grounds go everywhere, and due to the design you can't use normal dosing rings. I paid a local teenager to 3D print a special dosing ring which helped a lot - but it's still really messy. - It's maybe too senitive. We live in a Queenslander on stilts/steel posts - if i move around the room when it's grinding it gets upset and stops while it gets a read on the current weight. Sensitive enough also that if the vibration pump on the HX coffee machine is going it can upset it. - Static-y grind. Less so than some alternatives on the market, but still needs a spritz in the hopper and an OCD tool to distribute. - Doesn't grind espresso fineness well out of the box, needs shims installed to fine the size up so you're not constantly at the limit of the fine setting.
Overall i love this grinder, i think it's probably had a greater contributing influence of just how good our new coffee set-up has become for taste. I just wish it wasn't so messy. I already have an enhanced cleaning job with the new heat exchanger coffee machine, having to brush up a pretty crazy amount of spillage (even with a special 3d printed dosing ring) is pretty annoying.
Amazing grind consistency by Baratza Sette 30 AP – Acquired 3 weeks ago, and so far very impressed with the design, and build quality of the Sette 30 AP. I have been using the coffee grind setting on #10 for espresso and the consistency is excellent. My previous grinder was a Sunbeam and even on its finest setting it wasn't able to get my espresso style grinds. Great device! Not sure why I didn't buy this 2 years ago. Show details
The perfect electric travel grinder – I was looking for a competent conical grinder that was compact and light for road trips, that had decent levels of adjustment from filter to espresso, and minimal grind retention. The Sette 270 seemed to fit the bill. My daily grinder for my espresso machine is an expensive commercial conical weighing about 15kg. I did take this on a trip once… Read more
and it proved rather tedious lugging it in and out of the car. We saw an Aldi grinder on special so we bought and tested that, and took it back for a refund within a few days because the results were so awful.
After much research I bought the Sette 270 a few days before we left for a trip, did the initial set up here, knocked out some nice tasting plunger test shots, and packed it up ready to go in its original box. And I'm totally thrilled with its grinding performance ... fabulously adjustable, consistent grinding, easy to clean, and pretty quick to grind through 40g of beans in about 25s (my big conical does it in about 16s, so the Sette has a fairly decent throughput).
The results were excellent, producing satisfying wake-up plunger shots each morning and again before heading out the door. We reckon it'll pay for itself quite quickly not having to fork out for 4 coffees every day we're travelling, plus we know exactly what we'll get to drink each day.
The best part is that it's manufactured by a respected company with parts available locally at reasonable prices, if it ever needs servicing. So yes, it costs more up front but it won't end up as landfill in a few years like cheap grinders with no after-sales support, and that matters a lot to us.
Any downsides? It's a bit louder than what I'm used to but in a hotel room who cares?
Excellent grinder – I upgraded from the common $200 models to this grinder and don't know why I didn't do it earlier or in the first place. It is fast with consistent grind with absolutely no mess. Easy to clean. It does not come with detailed instructions so refer to YouTube, plenty of advice on there. Show details
Ease of Use – Great coffee grinder starts from 0 for fine grind right up to 10 for coarse grinds. Very easy to use just a press of a button for timing and turning a small wheel for grind numbers. There is a container on top where you can keep your coffee ready for grinding. Expensive but well worth it. Show details
Best affordable domestic grinder ever? – Looking for an innovative, consistent and incredibly well designed grinder? Finally there is one, the Baratza Sette 270Wi that ticks all the boxes at a price acceptable to many, but I appreciate not all. I hesitated for over a year before my family all chipped in to help me get my dream grinder for Christmas! I've had this grinder for a few… Read more
weeks now. My initial impressions are that it's a unique and good looking compact grinder, with innovative features. As per many professional reviews published elsewhere, the 270Wi has had all the widely reported bugs of the first model (the 270w) well and truly sorted.
I previously had a Breville Smartgrinder Pro which I was generally happy with, but it was drawing to the end of its 4 year life with no further adjustments available to me to compensate for the inevitably wearing burr. I was extremely disappointed that Breville cynically does not sell a replacement, for a part that predictably will wear over time. I promised myself I would only buy a new grinder with replacement burrs available.
I had read a lot very good things about the Sette and it did not disappoint. As others have noted, it's a somewhat loud grinder, but the Sette grinds so blazingly fast (at least 3 times faster) that it's hardly an issue.
The grinds are fluffy, consistent and delivered neatly into the group head with very little static. I use a BES920 Breville Dual Boiler and without a doubt I'm pulling better shots with more even extraction, and importantly markedly improved consistency and far more nuanced and fuller flavours. Consistent tamping is much easier to do well, due to the even distribution of the ground coffee in the group head also
The weight-based feature is not just really cool, it's highly sensitive, fast, and very accurate as verified on independent review video sites.
I find that there can be a slight tendency to over or under or over shoot by a few tenths of a gram, but that's splitting hairs! The new learning intelligent software really does mean that it gets more accurate the longer you use it as long as the type of beans and the quantity of beans in the hopper is relatively consistent.
The little portafilter hook that keeps the portafilter in place when grinding is great and fully customisable to your particular portafilter.
A huge plus for this grinder is the minimal grind retention. It's essentially zero, and I can't see any other grinder beating it due to its unique rotating outer rather than inner burr. Cleaning therefore is minimal.
There are 30 macro grind settings with 9 stepless micro adjustments in each macro step (hence the 270 model number with the total number of grind settings). It is very easy to get the perfect pour after an initial learning curve, but I do find that the pressure required to move the micro adjustments is very firm and occasionally accidentally moves the macro one as a result if you don't hold the macro ring.
All in all, a really effective and innovative grinder that does something most (all? ) commercial grinders can't, which is dose your ground coffee directly in the group head by weight and does so almost perfectly. Most professional Barista's who you see doing this manually in separate containers on small scales must be green with envy.
As a note I now use my now redundant scales to measure the shot into a tared cup so I now get super consistent shot volume as well!
We'll see what the longevity of this grinder is, but so far I'm very very happy. The brand has an excellent reputation, although be aware the previous model the 270W (without the 'i' for intelligent) has very mixed reviews for weighing and reliability issues. It was the inaugural model and the company has responded with dozens of design changes based on this feedback.
