Hey, good news, I'm back again and I've just finished my latest little project with this great product. I think that each time I buy this varnish the formula gets a little better. This time it seemed very forgiving, considering the many angles and panels involved, allowing adequate time to feather in each area before tacking. Three + day job but half of that was stripping, sanding and masking, four coats including prep coat, six hour recoat time. Used one full litre tin. Follow the instructions and apply thin coats if you want a good result. Unfortunately this time I didn't take any before photos which would show how much the depth and colour of the wood has changed with this varnish. It seems to penetrate the wood and fire up all the colour and grain. For me still the best value, best performing varnish that I have used. Good luck all and greetings from tropical Cairns.

Another great result from this product – Yup, that's right, its me again, just showing off now, recoated this bench top with the Bondall Ultra Gloss. Still believe it to be the best varnish that I have worked with. It brings out all of the amazing colours and patterns from deep inside the timber. Wood is Mango slab with four coats over two days, working time with the varnish is excellent with minimal noticeable brush strokes. Follow the instructions if you want a perfect result and watch the instructional video provided by the manufacturer.

Best value, best results – Still the best varnish I have used, easy to work with, ample time before it tacks, minimal visible brush strokes, easy clean up and its value for money. Trio of posts were in average condition before and came up brilliantly. Included a couple of before and after pics to show how good this product is. Small bench top is a previous job with same varnish and is Mango slab. All done as per instructions on the tin, follow the instructions, important to light sand between coats and critical to use only THIN coats, don't confuse this varnish with resin type finishes which are much thicker, varnish WILL NOT CURE if applied to thick and your project will be ruined. Product now has slightly changed since my last project but I believe it has improved markedly. Greetings from Cairns, Queensland.

Had trouble getting a gloss finish – I prefer Bondall varnishes. Have used their monocel "satin" extensively and it is (was?) a great product. I see the tin has changed slightly and the varnish now looks totally clear as opposed to slightly amber prior, so not sure whether the formula has changed? Anyway back to the ultra gloss. Have never used Bondall gloss before but have used other brands. Found this impossible to get a good finish on, even on a horizontal plane.
The main issue that caught me, is after two coats, (first thinned) I barely sanded as I could feel there was no dust/grit, so applied expecting to get a final high gloss finish and to my horror, once applied it quickly wicked away into globs. The third coat cannot adhere to itself unless you sand it rough as! Sort of defeats the purpose. I ended up on 180 grit and still small areas where the sandpaper had not scuffed wicked away. Anyway, initially the only thing I could do as I had started on the coat and did not want it to dry in globs was to keep varnishing : So I had to keep on stroking over the panel with the brush (natural bristle) until the varnish was dry and tacky enough so that it could not wick away. Needless to say, the end result was.... horrific! lol. Fortunately not a high-value piece, just a 110-year-old steamer trunk.
I might try the plain gloss next time, or go back to satin, but will probably not try this again given I had so much trouble compared to other gloss varnishes I have used in the past.

Beautiful gloss finish – I have applied this varnish by brush to my project, a piece of mahogany furniture. Here's a couple of points that I picked up in preparing to finish this project. 1. Seal the timber with a diluted coat of varnish or a specific sealer. Sand to 240 grit. 2. Vacuum the surface, wipe with a clean rag and turps then finish wiping with a tack cloth. These are about 3$ from Bunnings. 3. Watch how to apply varnish correctly. See link provided that I found useful. --Don't shake the tin--, but do stir well. Apply in a clean dust and insect free environment. I did mine in the garage after a quick vacuum. 4. Use a good brush and apply in slow strokes. I picked a really soft wall brush, the widest that fits in the tin. I should have decanted it but didn't have anything available. 5. Pre load the brush with turps then shake it dry. 6. If you miss a spot leave it. 7. Tip off the surface with the brush but make sure the brush isn't loaded. I just brushed off any excess into the tin. 8. Tipping off also spreads any areas that were thick or gaps that might exist. Pass the brush back over the work methodically, and be quick. If the varnish is tacky you have waited too long. Let it go and fix it on the next coat. 9. Pictured are two panels after the first coat dried. You can see that there is already a high gloss. 10. Also pictured is the gloss varnish tin and the tack cloth. 11. Have fun. This was my first attempt and I'm very happy with the results. 12.I have now sanded the surface with 400 grit wet and dry sandpaper that was wetted with water and a drop of dishwashing detergent. I will add more photos after next coats.
