Milk Frothing

Perfect and reliable/consistent tasting coffee machine. Delicious! Saved me at least $15,480!! – I've had this coffee machine for 6 years now and it has been a staple of my household, with over 4000 coffees made (It has a coffee counter! So big plus for the statistics nerds). To start off, this machine has saved me at least $15,480! Let me break it down for you. - Average cost of a latte at a cafe: $4 - Cost of 4000 cups of coffee at a cafe: 4000 * $4 = $16,000 - 1kg bag of coffee beans = $16.48 - Average cups of coffee per 1kg bag of coffee beans = 130 cups of coffee - Cost per coffee cup using machine: $16.48 / 130 = $0.13 - Cost of 4000 cups of coffee with this machine: 4000 * $0.13 = $520 - Savings: $16,000 - $1520 = $15,480

The coffee it produces is consistently delicious. With its built in grinder and milk frother, you can have a delicious cafe-grade coffee in your hands ready to drink at a touch of a button, within a minute or two depending on the program you choose. My suggestion for the perfect coffee is for you to use the "Coffee" program, followed by the "Warm milk" program. Yes, the built in programs "Macchiato" and "Cappuccino" are quicker, but if we are talking about the absolute BEST possible tasting coffee, then this is the way.

Did I mention it comes out READY to drink? Yup! You read that right. No, I'm not a psychopath with burnt off taste buds and no sense of heat. The coffee comes out at the perfect drinking temperature, so no need to wait to drink your delicious beverage. (PROTIP: If you're using a takeaway cup to take to work, make sure that you get a well insulated one so it stays at that lovely drinkable temperature)

This coffee machine has a built in grinder, but you can also use ground coffee via an easy to use side drawer. I love the fact that I can try all sorts of barista-quality coffee beans, or all sorts of flavoured beans (Hazelnut coffee beans are my FAVOURITE!)

Now let's talk about the milk frother - this little guy is okay at it's job, the only caveat is you need to be mindful of how it behaves with different types of milk, and you need to make sure that you run the cleaning program once you've finished using it. If you are a milk-froth snob, you are better off getting a separate frother, otherwise it is just perfect!! I've tried all sorts of milk and milk-alternatives, and there's a small variation on how it behaves. Unsurprisingly, the frother works best with low-fat milk - which is exactly what Bosch recommends. If you use other types of milk, full cream milk, almond milk, oat milk (You name it!), the frother will still work just as intended, but due to the thickness of the milk, the Macchiato/Cappuccino programs might not produce the intended amount of milk froth - but fear not, you can just top it up with the "Froth milk" or "Warm milk" functions. Lately I've been using oat milk for the delicious oaty flavour that it adds, and it is superb!

Now what about cleaning/maintenance, you ask. Cleaning this machine is very important as it definitely affects the coffee. Luckily for you, it is extremely easy to clean! There is a super easy cleaning program, and a descaling program. You can buy the descaling tablets from Bosch, but those are overpriced - you are better off buying a descaling solution from your local Coles/Woolies. There are cleaning tablets as well that you're meant to use for the cleaning program, I haven't found an alternative for those yet, so I've bought a few from Bosch. But honestly, I went for about 3 years without them, I just ran the cleaning cycle without the tablets and it was okay! But I definitely wouldn't recommend it - with the amount of money that you save by owning this coffee machine, you can definitely spare some money to buy the tablets (or find an alternative!)

You can and should also clean the milk frother (easily taken apart) as well as the brewing unit. Both of these should be regularly cleaned - I rinse my frother every day, and the brewing unit I clean it every 1 or 2 months - it depends on how regularly you use it. You can very easily visually inspect the brewing unit and see if it needs cleaning. One very important thing to remember is you absolutely must use the "food grease" supplied with the coffee machine, this will ensure smooth running and consistent quality. Both on the milk frother and the brewing unit. If the milk frother seals are not properly greased, it will perform noticeably worse and it will not froth properly. I went for about 3 years without doing it, and it slowly got worse and worse, and very stiff to remove. If you keep it well greased, the machine will feel like new every time!

TL;DR; Easy to use and maintain. Great and delicious coffee, every time.

Purchased in at Catch for $600.

Great coffee, easy – We have had this coffee machine for 4-5 years and never had any trouble with it. It is easy to clean and I take the whole system out every 6 months to give it a clean as it is so easy to do... It has never missed a beat and is used everyday. Would buy again if this one died.. Please not I have had trouble with a lot of bosch things and really do not like the brand dur to the trouble.... However this I would recommend, it has been the best coffee machine we have had.

It makes reasonable coffee – This machine makes decent coffee, but has always been quite inconsistent with both volume and frothing. To be honest I have never been able to tell the difference between Mac and Cap settings, there appears to be no difference. Often the milk syphon is unable to pick up milk and delivers steam, despite desperate attempts to intervene and get it working, it normally requires stopping the process completely and removing the assembly and starting again. This has occurred since the machine was new and appears to be a sealing issue.

The fact that you lose your grind if there is insufficient water in the tank or need to empty the drip tray after you start making a coffee is really annoying. This is even more annoying if you are using the 'ground coffee draw'. The machine consumes an enormous amount of water and you are forever refilling the tank or emptying the tray, so plenty of opportunities to throw away your freshly ground coffee.

I expected much more from this brand as I have a number of other Bosch appliances and tools which are simply brilliant. Wishing I had spent my money on a manual machine which I would have complete control of my coffee and not feel guilty about the amount of water it takes to make a coffee!

German technology ensures reliability here – We got this machine for free as part of a promotion on ovens we bought from Siemens. I was sceptical of the offer at first and studied the user manual with intensely as I didn't want to lose the control I had with our little manual Krups machine we were already using and had since 1998. Things like grind coarseness, water temp, strength and level in the cup are taken care of with this machine. That, with the relative ease of making a capuccino sold me on the idea, so we got this machine (I'd given up on capuccinos on our manual machine as I didn't get to enjoy them because I had to clean the machine as soon as I'd finished making them!).

This machine has a bean hopper for high volume coffee making and also a compartment to take ground coffee in small volumes that makes a single cup at a time.

The day-to-day operation of the machine is less onerous than our little manual one (especially for capuccinos), however, this machine is 3 times the size, yet requires the drip-tray to be emptied once a day just for 2 adults using it 3 times a day.

I guess it is a domestic machine, and it also prevents build-up of mould and nasties, but as designated machine maintenance guru, it does mean I'm working through one of my daily coffee breaks doing the maintenance. A normal coffee comes out with a very good crema and having experimented with the bean blends and the grind coarseness, I've now got a coffee that rivals any decent cafe.

The capuccino process is not fool-proof, but those of average intelligence will get a good and consistent result (the froth is not bubbly and the capuccino is light - if you want a wetter milky coffee, try the Macchiato setting). The process consists of the beans being ground and pressed into the brew-head, then milk being drawn up through a tube from an external vessel into the frother and dispensing to the coffee cup. Then the coffee is brewed and added to the cup - the large cup setting draws approx 70ml of milk and fills a medium-sized mug.

The user manual recommends the 'short-rinse milk system' straight away, which draws water from the water tank though the system into a clean external vessel with the tube inserted in it - creating a closed circuit system for recirculation. The froth system then applies heat to the recirculation water, but of course as there's a little milk still in the system, it's cloudy, so I always do 2 consecutive rinses, rinsing out the glass with the cleaning water in the sink after the first cycle.

Having lived with this machine for 2 months, I've now encountered some of it's idiosyncracies and managed them; when you get it, it comes with a care pack that contains cleaning tablets and a 4g tube of food-grade grease, this food-grade grease is a very important consumable for the machine. This grease is used on the seals for the brew-head and the milk-froth attachment, and should be applied at least after every second rinse of the brew head and froth head.

In fact, it helps form the seal for the froth head, and if you don't get it right, you end-up with flat capuccinos. I managed to sort this out myself, but did call Bosch to order more grease and they said there was none in Australia and in fact there was no stock in Europe either! For a consumable necessary to the operation of the machine, I though this was odd, however, I have sourced food-grade grease elsewhere.

I have had to do one machine clean using a tablet and the instructions were OK to follow and I was happy with the result (the first clean is after the first 200 cups). There is also a descaling programme, however being in in a soft water area I don't expect it will want to do that process soon.

The only other thing of note is that it requires a larger bench-top footprint than the physical dimensions of the machine as the water tank is accessed on the left-hand-side, the brew head is accessed from the right-hand side via a large door that has to swing right open, and the beans go in the top. Not a machine to try to fit snugly into an appliance cabinet, it's best on an open benchtop or in a cabinet that's double it's size with space to move it about (it has rollers on the bottom for this purpose).

This does lead me to it's great advantage over plumbed-in machines; as long as you have a power-point, it will operate anywhere, which means you can take it from home to, say, the caravan, beach house or even just to another room.

In conclusion, whilst it doesn't have the Italian flare, it does have German consistency of performance. Makes a decent coffee, consistent results, less labour intensive for milk-based coffees, takes beans and ground coffee Takes up a lot of bench space, expensive
