4 yrs on multiple grinds daily and I just replaced the upper and lower burr/blades directly from Breville. I just gave my grinder several more years of service. Burr product numbers for this exact model were SP0008610 Upper and SP0008611 for Lower for anyone needing the info. I clean my espresso machine every 4 weeks and do the grinder the same… Read more
time by seperating the hopper and simply using small paint brush on all areas of work. Now for the negatives ( zero from myself) around the impeller after 2 or 3 years is expected when you don't clean it occasionally or never as stated in the other reviews, When you continually stuff oily beans down its throat and never release the hopper and shake out the built up debris then expect problems der. I repeat der....
short sited grinder – great grinder down side very messy and the bloody cord is way to short to reach a power point {smallest i have ever seen) Show details
Does the trick – Makes a huge difference to the quality of the coffee. Does the trick for me and happy with the purchase. Takes 10 seconds to make two shots, ground to perfection. Show details
Not made to last – Worked great for 3yrs. Motor burned out this morning. Also have a breville coffee machine that was purchased at the same time and is starting to fall apart. Won’t be purchasing Breville products anymore as they dont last.
Impeller worn out and not replaceable – We bought a BCG600SIL in June 2016 and have used it each morning to make 2 double-shot espressos, so it has ground only about 3500 shots. The plastic impeller has worn out and the machine now jams. Breville does not provide replacement impellers, and the machine is out of warranty. We now have to send an otherwise good appliance to landfill because of one cheap not-fit-for-purpose part. Not good enough Breville! Show details
A good budget coffee grinder – This is my first electric conical burr grinder, and it is good. Most reviews say it is messy. That is true, but making good coffee is a messy process, so I am confused at those comments. Other reviews say you can't dial in the grind as the beans age for a good espresso. That isn't true. Even after 4 weeks my grind only went from 9 to 5.5, leaving… Read more · 1
me with plenty of play as the beans aged slowly. And there is more adjustment internally if you need extra fine.
After 2 months I would give this machine two thumbs up for the value for money, design, size, bean basket, adjustable timer, easy push button light and consistency of the grind. Obviously hard core coffee people would recommend a $1000 unit but for us plebs this $160 machine is great.
I have now used this grinder for 14 months, twice a day and no problems.
It works perfectly – I have only had this grinder for little over a month and basically just use it to grind coffee beans to make Espresso in a Moka. The grind settings go from very fine to coarse. I only grind a small amount each time on setting 12 and so far have had no problems at all. Show details
Impeller problem – About 8 months after purchase we srarted having grind problems. The machine kept stopping and getting clogged. I thought the problem was the beans. Kept trying new ones. Now I've discovered that the fault is the impeller and Breville doesnt sell this spare part. Can't believe that such a big company has such small regard for its customers. Show details
Grinds OK But Problems Start After Only 20 Months and Out Of Warranty – Found to grind coffee very well but has few design flaws and control switch is giving problems after only 20 months from purchase date. Design flaws include grind setting very easily moved inadvertently if someone moves the grinder on the bench and control switch timer is often moved from the set position simply by pressing the start button where… Read more
the finger must turn slightly on the button. Now after 20 months the grinder may start unexpectedly just by adjusting the timer setting, the timer setting has become so worn where the notched 1 second settings can no longer be found and sometimes the grinder fails to switch off and by the time you switch off at power point, a few shots of ground coffee are wasted.
you get what you pfor...if you research more about the product you get MORE than what you paid – a lot of the reviews here are about complaints how the grinder fails. most of the users, I would assume maybe they did not research enough about the grinder or attempted to "maintain" it without checking with the manufacturer. you do NOT have to take it apart. Breville has posted a video out where they recommend to clean the grinder using raw dry… Read more
rice grains....Yes there is a video on it by the manufacturer themselves. There are also some tablets for cleaning grinders. there is no reason to take the grinder apart to clean it other than the hopper and the burr to brush it down. I've been using mine a long time and still going strong. I had the same problem everyone mentioned here. AFTER researching, I cleaned mine as mentioned above (recommended by manufacturer) and it's still going.
Will not last – Experienced the same problem as many other users with the impeller that wore out after 18 months, making the grinder unusable. So the unit got the way of the landfill since Breville considered it out of warranty. Bought a Rancillo, more than twice the price, but expect it to be working for much longer. Show details
Parts wear out too quick – I have been having trouble with my grinder which is about 1 y/o. It can't grind fresh beans below level 20-25 the percolator setting which is useless for my espresso machine. It will grind about a 1/4 of a dose and then slow and stop. the grinds that are in the basket are very warm to touch highlighting that the machine is not working efficiently.… Read more
After pulling the unit apart for cleaning as normal, I looked closer and it seems that the burr are wearing down.
I actually came online just now to contact Breville but the productreview for the item came up first and here I am looking at reviews from people with simillar problems.
I'll report back with their answer as this product is not fit for purpose if it can't grind beans for 5-7 coffees per week over approx. 12 months.
So hard to clean – I bought this grinder from myer along with the duo temp machine. The coffee machine is great but the grinder is just okay. My biggest grief was that I couldn't get the grinder apart to clean it! What a pain! I rang customer service for assistance and the person on the phone was rather useless and couldn't help me at all. So I took the grinder to a… Read more
local service centre and it took two of them to pull it apart! Now it's been cleaned out and greased up so it works better but it could have been ultimately been better.

Breville BCG600SIL - DON'T BUY !!! – Purchased the grinder more than 8 months ago and i was happy in the beginning until the impeller start wear off which created lots of problem and frustration. The symptoms it grind the beans but it won't dispenses the ground coffee. You can't even find anything on the internet how to service the unit. To have the unit sent back to Breville for… Read more
servicing would cost lots of money and it would be pointless as they are using the same impeller which eventually you will have similar problem in few months time. Until now, i am still trying to find ways to replace the impeller. I won't not recommend anyone to purchase this grinder.
Durability is the issue – I previously completed a positive review for this series of grinders, but there is a big problem with durability. There is an impeller made from some sort of nylon material underneath the burrs which wears out fairly quickly. The impeller is designed to move the grinds out of the grinding area. What happens after the impeller wears down is that… Read more
the coffee grinds clump together underneath the burrs and eventually choke the machine. The grinds which come out are unusable for espresso machines.
This is not a one off failure - if you google the issue there are plenty complaining - including many in the USA
Wear and tear on one part wouldn't be too bad if Breville would supply spare parts so the impellers could be replaced. I contacted two Breville repair shops and both said that Breville won't supply parts. When I contacted Breville and asked where I could buy a replacement impeller, they just responded by sending me a list of authorised repair shops !
So I will end putting a $200+ machine in the bin - because I can't get a replacement part probably worth about $10.
To my way of thinking - this puts Breville in the category of eco-vandals - as well as not standing behind their products.
Does a great job – I really like this machine - simple, but reliable and grinding the coffee to the right size and quantity. Owned it for about a year now. I noted people mentioning it is a bit messy. That is true, but I think that might happen with every grinder of this type. Totally worth the cost.
Great grinder – This is a great little unit. Compact however it create a little bit of mess however nothing compared to my previous grinder. The dosage control works really well once you have worked the timer. It is pretty quiet as well. All in all for the money spent $169, it is good value I would recommend it to others.
I love it but it's messy! – I love it but it's messy! You can slot your portfilter in and set a grind time, but coffee always goes everywhere. Picked up on special at $129at myer use about grind number 12 for my bes840 espresso Does the job I love it but it's messy! Would recommend it
Poor build! – I originally owned the excellent "while working" BCG800. When that packed in I used the money from extended warranty cover to get the BCG600SIL. I was no longer confident in the electronics of the Smart Grinders anymore to pay the extra $100 needed to get the newer model. Opted instead to get the simpler machine figuring it had the same conical… Read more
grinder at its heart. It still is early days with this machine but finding it has issues with what appears to be clumping caused by static build up. It still does a great grind for great coffee extractions, but due to the static cling and clumping but is far messier at doing it. Hoping this may settle some what with more build up of oils etc in machine. I can only conclude the different design holds static charge so it is essentially a design fault if that is the case.
Edit 1/9/15 after less than six months unit has packed in. Stopped grinding mid grind one morning. On investigation and cleaning unit saw that conical burrs had begun to grind together, noted wear marks. Tried with setting wide open then tried again closing down a little. Machine now doesn't hold the dialed in setting and just grinds ultra fine. Static clumping issue noted earlier never went away either. Returning to store for refund!
